7/25/38 Letter to EC: "Am belatedly thanking you for my
reading, but am grateful as always, you know. I'm getting
on fine and feel grand...
"Have been to Dr. Haynes and like him fine, though I had
never heard of him until I received my reading. And if I
may be slangy, 'I think we've got something there.'
"I wondered, of course, if he knew of your work, etc. I'd
hoped I could let him know about having my reading. So I was
being very guarded about what I said at first. So I led off
by mentioning Dr. House. Dr. House - oh yes! he remembered
Dr. House - used to be at that Hospital with that fellow
Cayce. Yes, he was a fine doctor.
"Then I hopefully waited - but he veered off on another
subject. I kept trying to get back on it but he didn't
seem aware of it. I thought I was being terribly subtle
and tactful, etc., when he suddenly blurted out that it was
most unusual - my being so interested in that type of thing
- a young girl and feeling so intensely about such subjects.
Then he waited and I could tell there was something else he
wanted to say - so I kept on waiting and he looked so
self-conscious but finally out it came. He said that he,
too, was VERY interested in those subjects and liked to talk
about them - liked to know more about them but that you just
couldn't talk to many people about such things but - 'you
know - they think you're nutty.'
"Every time I go to him we talk for quite a while about such
things. Now and then he says - 'He's done some wonderful
things, hasn't he?'
"You know, it's funny - he doesn't think I'm pregnant!
Apparently (I mean by that - from what evidence I've
offered) I'm not. I haven't had any of the usual symptoms.
"It was while we were waiting for the results from a
pregnancy test he was giving me (an injection in my arm) that
I told him I'd had a reading and that it said I was pregnant.
He was very much interested and waited enthusiastically for
the results of the test. The test AGREED with what the
reading said and he pulled on his nose several times real
hard and said - 'WELL - looks like the ole' boy is right.'
"That was the second visit to him. I've been several times
since and he still isn't convinced in his own mind about it.
He says - 'Well - if the ole' boy says you are - I suppose
you are - BUT you couldn't prove it by me!'
"It's a peculiar situation to say the least. All the family
here think I'm just spoofing. I know positively that I am -
and I'm following my instructions in the reading faithfully -
except maybe I'm not walking as much as I should. It's
rather hard to find a place to walk and the highway is so
crowded - it's just a case of taking my (!) life in my hands
to walk on it.
"Each time I go to Dr. Haynes he asks me if I've heard any
more from 'that fellow Cayce.' The last time I went he asked
me when I was going to hear from you again. He said, 'I
wonder what he'd say about you now.' I assure him that
there's not the SLIGHTEST doubt in my mind and he says,
pulling on his nose, 'Well - I'll reserve my opinion a
little longer.'
"So, will you please add my name when you have check-ups
again? There are a few questions I'd like to ask. [See also
23-12]: If it is advisable, is there anything I can do to
prevent recurrence of menstrual period? Please explain.
According to my present condition, can I expect a normal
delivery? Is there anything I can do to prevent the
necessity of the Gilliam's operation which Dr. Haynes
recommends after the birth of the baby?"
