3/17/32 Gladys Davis' letter re receipts and expenditures
of ANI:
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:-
In regard to notice of motion for judgement, THE ASSOCIATION
OF NATIONAL INVESTIGATORS, INCORPORATED, a Virginia
corporation, Plaintiff, against EDGAR CAYCE, Defendant:
I, Gladys Davis, Assistant Secretary of the Association of
National Investigators, Inc., hereby certify that I kept
the records of all receipts and expenditures of the said
Association from its organization up to and including the
month of May, nineteen hundred and twenty-nine (1929), when
the accounts and records were then turned over by the said
Association to an accountant, Linden Shroyer, who set up his
books for the preceding years from my records. These
original records are still in my possession, and I find no
discrepancy in the amounts paid in salary to the treasurer
from that duly authorized. At that time individuals who made
contributions to the Association could specify in what manner
they desired their contributions to be used. The Plaintiff
no doubt is questioning those amounts which were donated to
Mr. Cayce personally, through checks made out to him
personally by friends and those desiring to aid him, which
Mr. Cayce let go through the Association account as a
matter of record, so that no question might come up later as
to his accepting gifts without the knowledge of the
Association. Throughout my experience as Assistant
Secretary I have personally seen Mr. Cayce endorse over
several thousands dollars worth of checks to the
Association, which were made out to him as personal
donations. I am surprised that the Plaintiff does not list
these personal contributions made by Mr. Cayce, instead of
picking out the very few instances when Mr. Cayce withdrew
the amount contributed as soon as it went through as a
record.
Also, I would like to say that I, Gladys Davis, prepared each
month - from May 1927 to October 1930 - a typewritten
statement of the receipts and disbursements of the
Association, each amount itemized. Each month I prepared an
itemized budget for the coming month. These statements were
mailed to Morton Blumenthal, Edwin Blumenthal, Thomas B.
Brown and David E. Kahn, on the first of each month.
Therefore, the Plaintiff is in error in saying that the
Defendant did not report such items. As long as the books
were in our possession, a detailed record was kept of every
transaction, both for the Cayce Hospital and the
Association.
In December 1930 an accountant from the office of Blumenthal
Brothers, 71 Broadway, New York City, came to Virginia - to
the Cayce Hospital - and made some alterations in the books.
When the hospital was closed on March 1, 1931, all the
Association and Cayce Hospital books were left in charge of
Mr. Weisbrod, the Blumenthal attorney. However, I have in
my possession the original records of the Association, and
also a copy of each month's typewritten statement of the
receipts and disbursements - both for the Association and
hospital.
Respectfully submitted,
[signed] Gladys Davis
3/19/32 Gladys Davis' letter to L. S. Parsons:
Mr. L. S. Parsons,
Law Building,
Norfolk, Va.
Dear Mr. Parsons:-
Enclosed you will find a list of some of those who made
personal contributions to Mr. Cayce, which he turned over
to the Association of National Investigators, Inc. If
necessary, I think you will be able to get in touch with all
of these. We can furnish the dates and correspondence if
necessary. Please let me know if this is what you desire,
and if there is anything further for me to do just at this
time.
There were also contributions to Mr. Cayce personally for
the hospital, in the way of furniture, pictures, books, etc.
He put these things in the hospital without getting any
credit whatever for them, although they were counted on the
inventory and were taken over at the closing of the hospital
with all the rest. I am wondering if such things could not
be used also, as the individuals who made these contributions
did so for the carrying on of the work, and for Mr. Cayce to
use as he saw fit - not for the use of anyone else.
Thanking you for your attention to this, and hoping you will
let me know if there is anything further I can do, I am
Sincerely,
[signed] Gladys Davis
