(Q) What is the real attitude and purpose of Lauterstein
to my future association with him?
(A) Very much in the manner as the body presents self when
alone in conversation as respecting the activities of both.
This may be as an illustration of that condition as exists:
To the body Lauterstein, [
257] is as the right hand. Why
would the desire be to be associated? How would one like to
do without the right hand! Just as the activities then are,
while there may oft be that there are those grudges as may
present themselves, those attitudes wherein seemingly there
are still underhanded things, this is as that that will make
for the body [
257] to be more on the lookout, more alert in
the activities, more positive and more sure in the end of
things.
(Q) What should I say to Lauterstein in reference to the
past due indebtedness when new propositions come up, and
profits are to be divided?
(A) As has been given, there should STILL be held that as
an overhang, or overlap, as it might be, that until these are
settled in an equitable and agreeable manner to all, then the
the larger share, the larger holdings, MUST remain in [
257]'s
control.
(Q) What should I do now in reference to Cayce Hospital
dissolution? [Work:EC] [See
254-57 Reports.]
(A) That, as seen, has been done. There should be the
surety of self as respecting that as was given as the
RELEASING of self from any indebtedness as respecting same.
(Q) What attorney should I use for that purpose?
(A) One that's well acquainted with the whole situation.
(Q) Better Norfolk or New York?
(A) It is incurred in Virginia, in Princess Anne County.
Better use one in Virginia, or in Norfolk.
(Q) Is it right to use the same lawyer, Parsons [Lester
Parsons], that is being used for the Association? [A.R.E.]
(A) Or some one of the firm - there's many in that!
(Q) Will I be held liable to the Building & Loan Ass'n if
I do not file suit against [
900] and [
137]'s to release me
from my obligation on the notes on the hospital?
(A) There WOULD be, unless there is a change of attitude as
to what they would do respecting same! for the Contract
Company is made a party to suit! Hence they should be put on
notice that that is not held good as an individual, see?
[See
257-61 & Reports.]
(Q) Where can I get profitable business to keep Federal
Wood Products Corporation going for next sixth months?
(A) We would still go back to government!
(Q) What branch of government?
(A) Either that in the Post Office department or in the
Customs Building.
(Q) What about the quartermaster war department?
(A) This has been placed, most of it. This would be small,
that might be used now.
(Q) What business can be gotten to make profit for Carolina
Wood Products Corporation for next six months?
(A) There may be many channels through which these may be
worked out. Those of the regular lines in the various
departments of same. These may STILL be carried on in
their regular channels.
(Q) Will I be able to keep my contract with Federal Wood
Products Co. after January 1st?
(A) That depends upon the activities of those who are in
charge of the affairs of which the Federal Wood is a part -
see?
(Q) What is the attitude of Col. Hughes of Chicago Title
now?
(A) Rather that the association be still kept.
(Q) What should I do to aid my attorneys collect my money
due from Albert Pick and associates?
(A) These are working out very slowly in the various
channels and the various ways that have been set. We would
follow along those same lines.
(Q) Is there any way I can upset the original sale of assets
of the Sterling Furniture stores and regain several millions
on accounts?
(A) That has been set in motion through some channels, that
if followed up - as we find - may TIE it up, and eventually
upset the whole conditions.
(Q) What basis have I for making claim against Federal Wood
Products Corp.?
(A) Only on the original, or on the contracts as exist.
(Q) If I can get a judgement, where will money come from to
pay me?
(A) Through that same channel through which that keeps same
in its course of operations!
(Q) What substitute can be used for metal in the
manufacturing of Boxes for Electric Refrigeration?
(A) There may be several different compounds, or
compositions as may be combined together. Some of these are
being worked on, or being worked out by others.
(Q) What new insulation can be used and save money?
(A) That of the composition of wood from those of sawdust
that is made of certain KINDS of wood compounded with pulp.
(Q) Should Mrs. [
310] of ..., Ala., be agent for Pittsburgh
Chemical products, for their mutual profit?
(A) This may depend upon the necessities or the needs in
the directions. This MAY be made as one AIDING in making the
connection for same, rather than being an agent! [See
310-4
Reports.]
(Q) Should [
1963] [my father-in-law] move to N.Y. to
represent or connect with Pittsburgh Chemical Corp.?
(A) This would be, as we find, very well - for the
associations should be both beneficial and helpful to
all concerned.
(Q) Is there any other business that would be better for
him?
(A) This would be well, as we find, and would be one of the
best.
(Q) How can I be certain to get Westinghouse Refrigerator
order for Gibson factory in October?
(A) Just keep on working in the same direction, and in the
same line as has been set in motion!
(Q) Who is proper and best man in Pittsburgh for me to see
to assure me of the business?
(A) In the same line, or same channel in which the
operations, or the starting of the order has been in.
(Q) Will Charles Gibson keep all his promises to me?
(A) Unless there's some unseen sources of things to upset
conditions, he would.
(Q) How much money will my first order with Westinghouse
amount to?
(A) Considerable sums!
(Q) As much as a million?
(A) Not in the ORIGINAL order, but in the first two or
THREE would be!
(Q) Should Ben Lauterstein be a partner on this business,
or should my brothers handle same?
(A) This has been outlined for the body as to how these
should be handled. Be best to keep them in that same
channel.
(Q) What basis should I use for consolidation of William-
Norris Co. of Highpoint, N.C., and the Carolina Wood Products
Corp. of Asheville?
(A) An interchanging of the stocks of each, and the
interchanging of the abilities of each to furnish that which
would supply a greater outlet for the combined efforts of the
two. In the ratio, would be as to what the output, or what
the profits have been shown in the activities of each
corporation as related one to another - see?
(Q) What should [
257]'s executive position be?
(A) As the director of sales, or sales manager, or the
executive head.
(Q) Would I do better to rent C. W. P. buildings and keep
factory in Asheville, or to make merger with [
2142]?
(A) As we find, it would be best kept in Asheville - in
the present, at least.
(Q) And make the merger also?
(A) And make the merger.
(Q) Why don't I get General Motors business?
(A) The basis, or changes that have come in the policies
of those through whom, or to whom orders go, has made a
variation in the General Motors orders. These, as we find,
may be overcome now WITH the changes that have come about,
or will come about with changes in the delivery, or the
manner or way of delivery - see?
(Q) Do they feel personally to me as they have before?
(A) They do. This is indicated by the manner in which the
body has always, and is ever received by them.
(Q) How many cabinets will I get from Atwater Kent this
year?
(A) Good order should be placed before the first of
November!
(Q) Should I go to Dayton next week, or the week following,
to see General Motors?
(A) At least by the week following, OR next week.
(Q) How can [his wife [
903]] aid [
257] in carrying out his
plans? [See
903-2 &
903-15 Reports.]
(A) In the manner as has been outlined in this direction;
that is, in the SOCIAL end.
(Q) What should her attitude to Lauterstein be?
(A) That same indifference that she has always held! Don't
try to be something she is not!
(Q) Should she endeavor to do any radio broadcasting work
this winter?
(A) She may do WELL in same.
(Q) In which chain?
(A) In the NATIONAL chain.
(Q) Who is the best man to see in that chain?
(A) Those regular channels through which such approaches
are made; for first will come try-out, to be sure, then will
come those of the approach through the reception as given by
those as receive same - see?
(Q) What should I do at once to get my promised amount of
stock from the Torridaire Company of Boston?
(A) These, as we find, have been held up on account of some
unseen conditions that have arisen. While we would not be
dictatorial in the demands, we would certainly be VERY, very
DIRECT in the seeking for it! and we find it would come
through.
(Q) Should I send the letter as I've dictated to my
secretary to Mr. Daley at Boston?
(A) I would read it again, and then you'll change just a
little and then send it.
(Q) Should we advise with Mr. Lande as to what's in it?
(A) Would be very well.
(Q) Will Torridaire be successful as now being merchandised?
(A) There must be some changes, or must be some different
way in PRESENTING it to the public!
(Q) Is it a good product?
(A) Very good!
(Q) What are the possibilities in money making?
(A) This, with - This is rather a luxury than a necessity
in some directions, you see - hence there must be some
change in the power of the purchasing agents, or the OUTLET
for same, before it would be made a GREAT, great change in
the present conditions, but the time WILL come when it WILL
be good.
(Q) What should Ike Lande do in this connection, as he is
the attorney for the money?
(A) He should follow out those lines as have been planned
out by [
257] as respecting same!
(Q) What should the new contract with Lande on [sister
[
459]'s] stocks contain for protection to [
459]?
(A) Those same necessary precautions that have been set out
heretofore, or as respecting same. [See
459-1, Par.
14-A--17-A, on
12/28/29.]
(Q) How should the insurance policy be made out?
(A) In the same way!
(Q) Should I be trustee for [sister [
459]'s] stock?
(A) Trustee.
(Q) Should I encourage [sister [
459]] to continue her school
in [..., N.J.]? [See
459-5 on
8/08/31.]
(A) If they do not attempt to overstep the plan as has been
laid out, and broaden too fast, encourage it - but if they
are to broaden out TOO fast, then DON'T encourage it!
(Q) What age children should she stick to?
(A) Nearer those of her OWN, so that there is still that
same personal interest as is seen or felt - until there
is more experience, more SETTLED plan of activity, else we
will find there will be discouragements that would arise
that would suddenly turn the mind into other directions.
(Q) What additional inducements does she need to fill the
school?
(A) Doesn't need any additional; only those of the ability
to - with the whole surroundings and connections - carry out
that as has been set out or planned.
(Q) Should I advise [bro. [
2653]] to remain in his hospital
supply business, or better go into refrigerators or chemical
business? [See
2653-4 Reports.]
(A) Hospital supply in the present. As there are
developments in the refrigeration or in the chemical line,
EITHER of these will offer an outlet for the activities of
the body.
(Q) Should [
348] go to the chemical company in N.Y.
(A) Would be very well.
(Q) What territory should he have?
(A) That should be divided out according to the needs,
or to best facilitate the activities OF the body. Don't
work a hardship on either one, but know the directions from
which the efforts should be put, and where it's necessary
that's where should be the activities - or where there's best
possible grounds for the activities in same! [See
348-7,
Par. R7.]
(Q) Is Pittsburgh Chemical organized properly?
(A) This would require a great deal of detail to look over
and to see as to whether it's organized properly! Best to
set out as to what the variations or reactions from each!
There are some parts of the organization that may cause
question. There are in the organization those that would
MAKE for trouble, but this depends upon just how far, or how
big advancements are made, as to what the condition would be,
or how they would outline - see?
(Q) Is Schmidt reliable and trustworthy?
(A) He's a good business man! Good head, AND reliable.
(Q) What is the best division for [bro. [
2588]] to be most
successful?
(A) In the same division in which he has started, in the
larger supply places!
(Q) Are [sons [
759] & [
773]] progressing as they should,
physically and mentally?
(A) Physically and mentally, progressing as they should.
(Q) Should I approach Fred Dietrich on refrigeration?
(A) Would be well to approach Fred Dietrich on the plan
first of putting in operation those suggestions as have been
made as respecting distributors. Then from THIS angle
approach him on whatever line is needed. First get the
interest, see?
(Q) Merely asking for advice?
(A) Merely asking for advice, friendly counsel, in the
beginning.
(Q) How about M. C. Rypkinsky, his former partner?
(A) Well to consider him in ANY department of same.
(Q) What would he be the best associate for [
257] in?
(A) In refrigeration!
(Q) What would be the advantages of having him associated
with [
257]?
(A) The interests as are known and held in many larger
distributors, or MANNER of distributing through larger
interests.
(Q) How should I handle the judgement of the Mountain City
Trust Co?
(A) As we would find, the best would be to handle that in -
as might be termed - a butting of accounts one against
another, as held by or for the manner or matter in which the
loan or the judgement would be, or might be, obtained - see?
(Q) How can I do that?
(A) Turn that same order to them for the collection.
(Q) What lawyer would be best for that?
(A) One who knows the ends and outs of both associations.
(Q) Would deLacy be the proper man, or Lande, or Reigelman?
(A) DeLacy, WE would give, would be the better of the three.
(Q) Is Kentucky Estates Corporation properly organized to
protect me against these judgements, until I can pay them?
(A) Properly organized.
(Q) Is it right for me to put everything in this corporation
from time to time?
(A) Very well.
(Q) What else should I do to protect my family and myself
further?
(A) The best protection is, as has been given, that keep
self right, and in a way and manner in which EVER willing -
every ready - to meet all those conditions as may be said,
in act or in word - and THAT'S the best protection!
We are through for the present.
