In reference to that given heretofore through these channels,
respecting that in Bladen County, Carolina, this is of the
nature that may be used in two - yea, three - different types
of timber from same. As to whom this may be sold, as we
find, that there is a quantity of the character of oak that
may be used in the manufacture or barrels of kegs, this, as
we find, should be contracted for through some channel that
makes a specialty of such a character of product; or as those
in Baltimore, Cooperstown, Pittsburgh, or even in Charleston,
West Virginia. These, as we find, would be the character for
this particular type. That of the gum and certain other
oaks, as the water and the red oaks, would be that which
might be used for types of furniture; while others yet may
be used - in the pines - for paper or for the box companies.
This, as we find, should be sought out by either self or
those of the nature through whom such may be had. Obtain
the needs of those sources, that may be had through the
Southern Lumbermen or through those that are the
manufacturers of those characters of products that have been
indicated. Those individuals through whom there have been
negotiations may meet these in time - as we have indicated
- the latter portion of the year, as we find; though this
through these channels - or these portions of same - could
be contacted by self.
Ready for questions.
(Q) Would it be best for me to contact and sell direct?
(A) To be sure, more can be made in that way. Be sure there
is not confusion and demands on the part of those with whom
you have negotiated for their part in the sale.
(Q) How would be the best way to handle this?
(A) As indicated, seek through those channels as indicated.
There are publications, you see, as indicated - the lumbermen
- Southern Lumbermen. Indicate the character, and advertise
through those channels for such and such type. First the
body should know, to be sure, how much pine is on the tract
of land, how much oak would or could be used - as pine -
either for paper or for boxes; oak that may be used as lumber
for furniture; gum and ash and other characters that may be
used in the manufacture of this. How much oak may be used
for the barrels and kegs and the like; and then they will
approach it in a manner that will make for the more ready
sale of same. As to how much the drayage, as to how easily
it may be delivered to this or that point, see?
(Q) Will the present owners of the Bladen County tracts and
John D. Beatty of Elizabethtown, N.C., still cooperate with
me and my husband in effecting this sale?
(A) If the information as indicated is known, is sought out,
is made a part of self's activities. If THEY are to do this,
then self's own commission would be very small.
(Q) Will Geo. L. Hume of Suffolk, Va., sell this timber for
me by that date and to whom?
(A) He may, but - as indicated - it would be better for
self, provided the associations and relations with Hume can
be made such that he doesn't "hog in."
(Q) Is the Harrison Lake Timber Co.'s tract of timber in
British Columbia, Canada, salable at this time?
(A) That portion of same, as we find, that at THIS time
would be salable is already contracted or spoken for through
the British Paper Company. There are other types, of course,
in this particular tract of land which might be contracted
for, through some of the aeroplane companies for the
Government, but this would require a long period of time; for
there are such natures of timber in this tract that might be
used in this structure. This would best be approached
through the aircraft companies, but preferably the Government
- as the body's association is with same.
(Q) To whom should I write?
(A) Better go and talk than to write! They are there close
by! Seek out those in the departments of the Government
where contracts are made for those kinds or characters, the
very natures that are needed for same, see? The paper
portion of it, or the soft wood, is spoken for; in fact, it
will be next spring before there will be much ready to cut
for THAT usage, and the other - as there are being made those
arrangements for this type and the character of materials for
the Government, in seeking out not only in their own woods
but in those that are in such proximity as the British tract
that might be used for just such purposes, see? These come
through the commissaries as related to the purchasing
portions of same, see, the Government. In Washington, yes!
(Q) What kind of contract does the Green Point Logging
Company have with the Harrison Lake Timber Co., and would
this interfere in any way with the sale of the timber to
a prospect of mine?
(A) As indicated, the certain paper. Timber - paper timber.
(Q) Would this interfere?
(A) Only interfere with that portion of same, as we have
indicated; does not interfere with that type to be used of
the harder for the other character of work. There's
sufficient in this particular tract; as there's something
like sixty - yea, about ninety million feet.
(Q) Considering the reopening of the Carolina Wood and Metal
Products at Asheville, N.C., what would be the character of
timber most desirable to meet their needs?
(A) This might not be determined until it is determined by
the Carolina Wood or Metal Products Company as to what is to
be their specialty in the manufacturing, see? As we find in
the present, for the next year's needs, something like fifty
to sixty thousand feet of the GUM might be used. Outside of
that, not very much.
(Q) Regarding the Harrison Lake Timber Co., will Senator
J. W. Bailey of Raleigh, N.C., pay me commission as per his
agreement upon completion of this sale thru me?
(A) He would. Provided it is carried in its proper form, to
be sure. But this does not include - you see, the agreement
is that there's SO MUCH of it to be sold in this particular
association or connection. Unless there is a change in the
type of product to be manufactured there, there's only a
small portion of same to be used, see?
(Q) Any further advice that will be of help in this regard?
(A) As indicated, acquaint self with how much -
approximately - of each character of wood is available in
the various tracts of land, making the approaches through
those channels that are needed for those particular types,
see? and this may, with the opening and with the changing,
bring about a much quicker activity.
We are through for the present.

BACKGROUND
See previous Ck. Physical Rdgs. answering questions about
tracts of timber which she wished to sell on a commission
basis.
7/09/34 She submitted questions.
REPORTS
8/01/34 She wrote: "Want to thank you for my timber rdg.
Am working on all three deals. Harrison Lake Timber Co. says
they have no contract with the British Paper Co. (I gave them
the name of the co. as my prospect.) Since the Green Point
Logging Co. is cutting timber right now, I feel sure the
Harrison Lake Timber Co. made a contract with them, and they
in turn to the British Paper Co., thinking that would cause
me to lose my commission. Am getting it straight if
possible; if not, I want another reading about it."
10/05/34 She was present for
264-44, submitting questions on
her health, her mental and material affairs.
