12/08/32 EC's reply to his letter [under

279-4 Life
Rdg. Reports]:
"Dear [
279]:- Yours of the 30th was received. I am indeed
sorry that things have taken such a turn for you and yours.
While it may look very dark at present, I feel that out of it
all will come an awakening which will make a better condition
than could have existed otherwise. Of course, we are always
prone to judge things from the material angle. God often
chooses such circumstances to make us realize that we are
dependent upon His bounty. He also gives those who have
gotten some vision of what it is all about the ability to
trust more and more in not the material successes, but that
necessary for us to realize that if we have the abiding hope
in Him it brings us strength and contentment as nothing else
in the world will. I know you don't want to hear a lot of
surmising and comment on a thing of this kind, but I only
would say - if I have been in the very least an instrument
for making you sufficiently strong in mind or body to, as you
say, see some good in all this, rather than censuring anyone,
then my life has been somewhat worth while after all.
There's nothing that gives me greater joy than to know I have
been of some help, especially to one I love as I do yourself.
"Let's hope that we can all take hope and feel that
everything is not quite so bad. I truly hope conditions are
not so bad with your mother as they look at present. I know
what a dreaded thing it is to look forward to even a short
period of helplessness, or dependence entirely upon the
thoughts of someone else and their wishes and desires,
especially when one has been so active as your mother. It is
especially for our mothers and loved ones that our prayers go
out.
"I have been looking forward with some anticipation to
hearing whether or not you all had the meeting with the group
there. Your minds and hearts have been so full, I am sure,
that you have had little opportunity to think of anything of
the kind. If there's anything you can do, however, toward
getting them together, it will be a wonderful help to me.
"For the last few days I have been quite 'under the weather.'
Sunday afternoon suddenly I was taken with rather a choking
sensation, and by night I had lost my voice. It was only
yesterday that I was able to get myself sufficiently in hand
to do anything for it. I'm glad to say that I'm feeling much
better; at least able to dictate some letters, and this
morning we started with appointments again.
"I hope this finds you feeling just as well and strong, and
more determined than ever to carry on in His name - for the
good of everything and everybody.
"Much love from all to you and yours. Write whenever you
can. It is a pleasure to have a letter from you," [
