4/13/26 I don't know whether you have heard anything of it or
not, but we are having great excitement here and really
serious conditions, although the happenings was at
Madisonville. Two weeks ago there was three little girls,
two of them 14 and one 18 taken away from their escorts by
three negro's and raped, treated very ruff [rough], and last
Wednesday, I suppose the same three negros took one little
girl 16 away from her escort, dragged her out of the car,
(as the others did) and two of them ravished her, all four of
the girls are in serious condition so is said, but the
authorities have three of the negroes in jail, one in the
Henderson jail and two in the Louisville jail and their trial
set for Arl [Apr.] 23rd, of course no one expects any-thing
but for them to be hanged immediately, that is if they get a
trial, they say everything and everybody is at fever heat
around Madisonville. The paper stated that they will have
the state troops there when they have the trial, that may
save them from being mobbed. These three are all, negro's
high up you see, one a chauffer and houseman for a mine owner
there in Madisonville and of course (a pet), another was
a manager in one of the mines there, and the third one had
a position in a mine at Earlington, all high ups and no
doubt but (pets). But, I suppose have been petted their
last time for some time now. The last little girl was the
daughter of an Alabama man, and was out with a Banker's son
there in Madisonville his name was Stum, a son of A. P. Stum,
a banker there in Madisonville, the girl's father is there
in Madisonville now, her name is Miss Breithaupt. AWFULLY
BAD. But, it doesn't cease.
4/19/26 "I know woman sufferage is all wrong."
12/15/26 Daughter [
243]'s ltr. [under his Ck. Physical
304-11 Reports] implies that she considers her father very
selfish: "Oh, he is so different in everything from my
sweet, unselfish, sacrificing mother [
3776]."
11/18/28 His letter to EC: "I feel that God created only
one man and one woman, and not races of men. I feel that
that the Book clearly teaches that the so-called colored
races are the products of man's violation of God's
instruction to man found in Lev. 20:
15-16; Lev. 18:23;
1 Cor. 3:17. This beast was made for man's servant to
develop the earth. Man was given control of the beast, as he
was of everything created.
"Man has misused his privilege and violated his instruction
and is now trying to take this offspring of his sin and
violation into the family of man who was created in the image
of God, all against the will, the purpose and the instruction
of God."
9/18/29 Mrs. [
760]'s ltr. from Hotel Van Cleve, Dayton, Ohio:
"Mr. [
304] would like this hotel; not a negro about it, that
I have ever seen."
7/06/32 Mr. [
304]'s ltr. to EC:
"I heartily and sincerely appreciate your letter of the 2nd,
and your mention of me entering upon this plane seventy nine
years before and your wish expressed that I may survive many
years more. This event very naturally is limited to a very
few (the knowledge of) and interesting to many less, I hope
the influence that has gone out from my activities have been
more good than bad, I don't know, I do know that I have been
misunderstood many times, I hope for the remaining time here,
what influence I may exert may be good and intend my efforts
to be in that direction, if in no way except by example. My
desire is to help. To do good for as many as possible and to
set such examples as will be worthy for others to remember
and to imitate or copy."
See subsequent Ck. Physical readings which indicated great
suffering with bronchial asthma and bronchitis, and other
ailments, until his death shortly following a fire which
swept his home, on
4/11/37. He would have been eighty-four
years old on
7/03/37.
4/13/34 See
295-9, Par. 19-A indicating associations with
[
304] in Egypt and England.
5/02/37 Mr. [
779]'s ltr. to EC: "I counted Mr. [
304] one
of the few men who meant much to me. From what Mrs. [
2457]
said his death must have occurred about the time I had a
dream about him. It was something like this: For some
reason I was at a railroad station and a train came to a
stop, and to my happy surprise who did I see getting off
the train but Mr. [
304]! I was not expecting him. I rushed
up to take his two suitcases and invited him home with me.
His answer was, 'I am sorry, [
779], but I don't have time -
I'm just passing through and changing trains.' Then I awoke.
I never thought any more about it, because I very often have
dreams about [
304] and his family, but after I got the news
of his death I thought there must be some connection."
