8/07/36 "I have about given up my trip to Ala. for a month or
so, as [
228] and I decided it was more important for me to
follow directions of the rdg. until I improve and feel
better. Of course, I have rested since being here as I have
nothing to do with the housework and I know that will help in
time.
"The discharge stopped before the rdg. got here and I have
not known exactly what to do about the douches. I have taken
two several days apart, but don't know whether to keep it up
or not. This last rdg. gave the Atomidine stronger than
before, a tablespoon to a quart of water, before it was a
teaspoon for that amount. I asked about the Zonite but have
never used any, in fact I have never used anything except
what the rdgs. recommended - Atomidine, Glycothymoline and
Creoline, a teasp. to a quart. I did use Creoline alone for
several months and dropped the other two, so that is where I
did wrong, as the rdg. said to alternate with the three. I
started with Creoline the middle of April when things were
getting pretty tight with us, as it was the cheapest, and
used it about two and a half months and I got worse all the
time and did not know why.
"I have worked on the stomach support and have taken out all
steels except two in front where it fastens and two in back.
It is still not very comfortable as the steels in front press
quite a bit, but if I take them out I will have no way of
fastening it. I don't know how loose it ought to be to do
the work, it is too tight now to feel very good, but if I
loosen it it may not do the work.
"We are eating at a boarding house now which is a great
improvement over the cafes, but still they do not give me
the proper diet. They have a big dinner at noon and a
regular old fashioned supper consisting of starch, bread,
meat and sweets, the things I am not supposed to eat
together, no vegetables at night except tomatoes once in a
while. I used to loose my appetite when I was cooking, but
I did have the right kind of food, and it agreed with [
228]
a whole lot better. He is beginning to feel the effects of
eating out, as he has done it almost the whole year. In
Miami, I fixed morning and night meals, and we ate noon meal
at cafes. He awoke the other night and said he felt kinder
numb all over and it was sometime before he got over it
enough to go to sleep. That sounded like poor circulation,
which he has never had before.
"I like it here better now since I have met some lovely
people and have been invited to several parties. We have
met some thru the office and some thru the church."
8/12/36 EC's ltr.: "I think if you keep the Atomidine douche
you will soon be rid of a great deal of trouble. Hope you
have the support arranged so that it is comfortable, yet
helpful in keeping the position of the stomach, so that the
food will digest better. Have you ever tried the elastic
support? It has been suggested in the rdgs., to take the
regular bandage gauze, wide enough to make a support, and
wind it much as the soldier boys used to do their leggings.
That should make a comfortable support. It would require
several windings, of course, but you will be able to work
out what will be the most comfortable, am sure.
"You will just have to give the dietician at the boarding
place the things that you can eat, and am sure you will be
able to get her to cooperate with you. Be not too insistent
but very persistent, and she will bend sooner or later. Diet
is not always thought of, but it is about the most important
factor in anyone keeping well.
"Doesn't sound so well for [
228] to be having spells like
that. Keep on the alkalin side as much as you can, and
keep a bottle of Upjohn's Citrocarbonate on hand to help out
once in a while. Should that occur again, let me know - we
had better check up on [
228].
"Glad you like it better. Hope everything will work out to
the best advantage to all. The church is certainly the place
to meet pleasant, nice people, and hope it works out fine for
all. Know it will do them good to know you and [
228].
"A busy season here."
