5/15/33 EC's letter: "Now, I wish I could give you the name
of the dried milk. If I remember correctly - Is Hall still
there in business? If so, he can tell you about this, I'm
sure - for there were several times while I was in Selma that
the readings suggested this for our own boys, a certain kind
- and, if I remember correctly, it was called Dryco; which,
I think, carries all the fats. The Bulgarian milk is put up
in tablet form, or in Bulgarian tablets that you put with
some other milk - and it works especially for tender
stomaches, and where there is needed to be built up fats
in the system; though, of course, this is not fattening;
in fact, Bulgarian milk is given for people who are
excessively fat - or who run to excess in fats. Of course,
you know I'll be very anxious to know the surgeon's report
when you have had the opportunity to consult him. I'm
certainly sorry that [
318] has the whooping cough; for I know
it tends to aggravate the condition for him at this time, and
I'm glad you have been able to get the truss fitted so that
it will prevent so much straining that would naturally come
from the coughing."
6/11/33 Father [
779]'s letter: "[
318] left Sat. and is at
..., Ala. He thinks it very big to go out without his mother
to visit. We thought it might help him. He had a pretty
hard time with the whooping cough. For several weeks he
hardly retained anything he would eat. He got very thin.
He is looking lots better now."
11/05/33 "[
318] had the sore or pink eyes and was out of
school for a week, and he seems to be well, but still one
of his eyes becomes very inflamed every few days and when
he reads we note that water runs from his eyes. His mother
advised us few days ago that it might be well to keep him
out of school for the session or till his eyes are strong
again. We are using some kind of eye drops, but they don't
seem to be doing much."
12/06/33 EC's letter: "I'm sure you are very wise in keeping
[
318] out of school and not using his eyes. You will find
a very good thing to take the inflammation out of his eyes
would be to use potato poultices; the old potatoes. Of
course, all of them are old now, but I mean by that don't
use the new potatoes. Don't use too large a quantity, but
scrape the potato very fine and bind it (of course with the
eyes closed) over the eyes, using a piece of gauze to keep
it in place, and let it remain at least thirty to forty
minutes - just about when he is ready to retire. Afterwards,
when you take it off, bathe his eyes very good with a weak
solution of boracic acid. This will cure up all this trouble
and prevent his having irritation later on. No doubt it will
make the granular eyelids, unless you do get this
inflammation out. You'd better take him down to Dr. Elise
Stone's and let her make two or three adjustments in the back
of his neck and shoulders, that would help as much as
anything else."
12/27/33 Father [
779]'s letter: "[
318] doing nicely, except
his eyes not so strong yet. Thanks for the suggestion about
the potato poultice. Will certainly try it."
11/18/34 "Sons [
781] and [
318] need attention to their
rupture condition."
7/12/36 "We are having quite a polio scare in Ala. It might
be well for [
318] to continue his visit in Okla. He is not
very strong anyway."
11/25/37 "[
318] is doing very well in school and growing very
fast now."
1/38 and 11/38 Young [
318] wrote EC about having bad colds
that lingered.
11/21/38 "I play football sometimes at school."

8/30/48 HLC's ltr. to their mutual friend, Mrs. [
264]:
"Years ago, the readings specifically [318-6] recommended
an operation - not a very serious one but something that
needed to be attended to. He has let this go by with the
result that there seems now to be a constant drain on all
energy and vitality. I am sure he must be rather anemic
and perhaps subject to T.B. I have advised him to go back
to his reading and follow it very closely. If he does this,
I think there will be good results, both from the physical
and the mental standpoints. He is a sensitive, capable
person and can go far if he can just get enough energy to
get underway." [See subsequent notations under
318-2 Life
Rdg. Reports.]
2/01/50 See ltr. under
318-9, Par. R15 indicating a successful
hernia operation was performed last Oct. 4th, but that now he
is in a T.B. sanitarium. [See subsequent reports under
318-9
Reports.]
