4/18/43 Letter: "My, it is such a different feeling not
having anything to do on Sunday. It used to be my busiest
day.
"In many ways I have been fortunate in getting located with
the Special Service. When war was declared only one unit
existed. It is made up of about 100 men in each unit, all
selected to form a kind of team that can be attached to a
regiment to provide them with impromptu shows, set up a
canteen, a library, put out a mimeographed news letter,
organize contests, games, athletic events, etc., for the MEN
BEHIND THE LINES. Our outfit is just being formed, no one
has been in it for more than 10 days. It is full of singers,
boys who play instruments, clerks for the store, etc.
"So much of the work is right down my line that it makes me
think of my original plans and program in ...
"I have nothing but praise for the fine system of induction,
classification, and adjustment. I can easily see how someone
can get lost, though...
"...Here now my library experience, typing, mimeograph work,
athletic director, radio experience, and game organization,
fit perfectly. I am going to have to be careful that I don't
get into office work, for the Lieutenant for whom I am doing
this work on the booklet has asked me about work in his
office. I don't want to get tagged too soon.
"In a few days I'll write [
257]. I have been waiting to
interview the 1st Lt. who is commander of my unit. These
interviews are given all new men to decide what classes they
are to take after the basic training. As I wrote [
1505],
I am qualified to teach most of them.
"One of the hardest things I have to do is keep my mouth shut
but it is best now, and I will."
5/30/43 "I have my Pfc."
6/14/43 Father's ltr.: "He is a Cpl. now."
6/17/43 "I have charge of the Company P.X. Our Platoon has
the week and I am Manager. It's an all day job, though I
have seven boys actually doing the work."
