7/06/27 "I was happy to get the reading. It was very good,
as usual, but rather indefinite to me. I am just at the
stage at which I would like to see something tangible and
definite, but of course, if it isn't there, you can't see
it; and while the reading left nothing to be desired, still
in all, it left me feeling rather incomplete, if you know
what I mean.
"I hope you have had a good rest and a wonderful vacation.
I went away for the weekend - up the mountains and returned
with a deep sunburn. I look somewhat like a boiled lobster,
and I gained two pounds. I saw a beautiful sunrise yesterday
morning. I awakened suddenly - looked out of the window -
and beheld a gorgeous sunrise of riotous colors. My one
feeling was that of awe, and reverence - as though God had
awakened me suddenly, to show me that there is something
beautiful in the world and to show me a miracle. I suppose
I am too emotional, but this sunrise gave me a feeling of
peace and of beauty, as nothing had ever done before.
"I love mountains. They are so lofty - so grand and so quiet
that one cannot help but have beautiful thoughts and a deep
feeling of security and peace. Petty thoughts and motives
and people and petty jealousies are forgotten.
"One is near to God and to Nature in the midst of these
mountains and for that reason, when I returned to New York
with its skyscrapers and the crowded, stifling subway, and
the office with its hustling and bustling and the same old
story all over again, the disillusionment was too great.
The same old grind all over again."
8/25/27 "They say water will eventually find its own level,
but it doesn't seem to be so in my case. I flounder and
flounder and seem always to be in the wrong environment,
doing the wrong things - and I probably aspire to greater
things than those I should reach for and which I probably
shall never attain. It makes me very unhappy because I feel
there is no real happiness for me - I am always being
disappointed... I have followed your advice and am working
for Mr. [
900]. I am intensely interested in your [Mr.
[
900]'s work on manuscript, EC philosophy] work and hope that
I shall be able to continue it without finding it too much
of a strain in addition to my hard days at the office.
"Thank you for your patience, and I do appreciate your
interest and help."
9/01/27 EC's letter:
Was certainly very glad to have yours of a few days ago
written from up in the mountains. We were sorry that you
didn't spend some of your vacation at the Beach, but feel
very sure that you got some real help from being in the
mountains and being close to nature. I guess by now that
you are back in the office and feel you are set for a grind
for another year, at least. If you will remember, the
mountains and the sky, and try and let some of the bigness
and the glory of those mountains, the sunshine and the
closeness to God and nature, shine out in every little thing
that comes up in the office, I think you will find life will
be much better. I don't mean to be a preacher, nor a
teacher, but rather just as an advisor and - as it were -
let's reason together. The over-shadowing of self by so many
minds and so much hubbub at times is appalling, but - if
we'll keep sweet and know that the life that we live is but
the reflection of our individual conception of the God we
worship - it will make a vast difference - for we soon learn
that if it is that out God is fame or fortune, or as to what
the other fellow will think, or pleasures of the earth, it is
all dross - but, if our God is the Lord, and we a portion of
that God, what a difference!"
