7/17/34 "I got the rdg. and you know how I appreciate it! It
amazes me, though, even as you say, in face of the existing
circumstances. I am going to follow the rdg., though, as
best I can... I was at the Stand all the time on Fri., the
6th when I thought you were giving the rdg. On Sat. at the
appointed time I was on my way to the Stand from Fordham Rd.
I wonder if that made a difference? I didn't talk to or see
anyone on Fri., but the day before, on Thurs., I was down at
the P.W.A. to see about a job. They have nothing, but they
did refer me to the drama dept. I tried out for a part - a
small one - of an Italian mother, and I got by fine with my
dialect, but I found out that I was too young for the part.
I hope the rdg.'s right, and I do get a job Aug. 15th. It
probably meant a steno. job, don't you think?
"It seems to me that if Dr. [
4948] did ask me to marry him,
that would encourage me to be more material-minded, as I am
surely not, nor have ever been, in love with him... Can't I
marry someone I'm in love with? Don't I deserve that?...
Perhaps this will be my fate from a previous incarnation for
some reason or other."
7/17/34 Ltr. to GD: "I've been so in the dumps lately. My
hair is getting gray, and some very upsetting things happened
only Sun. and yesterday. For some reason I have to be hurt
by all these things, but who knows why? Only, it just
doesn't seem fair. I wish I could talk to you. You've such
a wonderfully clear-thinking mind and you always help me so
much."
8/17/34 "Very fortunately, I have a few weeks' temporary work
with an exporting firm and it has kept me quite busy, as I am
busy all day long and it takes me an hour to travel downtown
and an hour to get home, and I also have to get up very
early, but I'm delighted with it all, and don't mind the
hours."
10/01/34 "I've been so distraught lately. Looking for a job
that doesn't seem to materialize. It's all so difficult.
Makes me feel so useless and hopeless. I wonder if I'll ever
get to where I feel I have a place again... Nothing seems to
be working out for me, not any phase of anything at all.
"I saw Mr. [
257] for the first time in three months last
Friday."
1/05/35 "I am managing to go along day by day, in a deadly
job, and I'm really afraid to think, because I'm stagnating
and getting nowhere. At least I've some good friends, and
that is my sole comfort."
3/27/35 She was present for
349-19.
