7/15/41 Letter:
..., Ala.
Dear Mr. Cayce;
I have been trying to write you, to sleep, - to get myself
treated - in fact I have been putting in the time working on
MYSELF more since I received the reading than I have done of
anything else. And still trying to work a little also - in
order (as is the custom since Eden) to eat a little - us two
old folks at home.
As has always been true since I knew about your work, that it
has at various times dawned upon me, when something incident
to the work - something that was said - some conclusion - or
something obvious - I have been able to or allowed to see the
KINGDOM OF GOD at WORK - the thing that can be known about -
but can't be described. It can be illustrated as Christ did
before his hearers many times - and some of us have to live
a lifetime to understand what he meant.
I had summoned all the faith I could in a worried mind & weak
body to write you the last time - and how relieved I was when
I received your wire. I had hardly slept any the night
before, the day of the engagement and lay down before time -
thinking I could be awake when the time comes - but I slept
on through the hour.
The reading indicates I should REST. I am doing all of this
I possibly can. What I do is not all burdensome (I mean the
work), I conserve myself all the time. Do you think it means
I should do NOTHING at all?
When I pull through this I want to be something worth saving.
And I know I have been carrying a lot of dead weight - and I
can feel it bearing down on me. But I feel better just now
as I write and want to be cheerful and not talk about the
disagreeable.
I want to tell you about my M.D. I went down to see him
Saturday evening. I hadn't been taking his high priced
medicine for some weeks or so - partly because I was out of
it and partly because I could feel no benefit. He is a busy
man - always a large waiting crowd to see him at office
hours - he has done good too that I know of - too a stickler
for his science & he means to get obedience from his
patients, but I saw him often with me Saturday while we were
talking & after he had read the reading from you. Instead of
condemning him as I had felt like before - I was glad for the
change I saw. For some time ago I took the reading I got in
Oct. '36 & Jan. '37 [
370-4 &
370-5] to leave with him so he
could get connectected up what I had told him of my history &
he had expressed a desire to see them. On my next visit he
handed me the readings as I sat down at his consultation
desk. I asked him what he thought about it then & he tapped
his head - indicating & saying - he's light up there - but he
says there is no harm in him. Now you & I know that this is
his loss not ours & he is beginning to see it when I returned
with another reading Sat. [370-8] I told him as I gave it
to him - that he could, (and I rather expected him to) run me
out but he didn't - he took quite a time to read it & you
know how short it is - also he read the enclosures about the
beef & paper. Then saying what you want me to do. I asked
him what did he think he out [ought?] to do to me. He really
proceeded to treat me more sincerely & helpfully than he ever
has. He TOLD MORE TRUTH.
But I had pity on his ignorance with all his assumed dignity
& knowledge - for he asked me when I was at Virginia Beach
to get that reading.
That is what I want - the DIGNITY & POWER that is in the
abiding spirit - that I may be cleansed to be used in his
name. Yes like my life reading [
370-3] said he strong &
fearless like the Roman Soldier.
I must get ready to go to work. I have seen Mr. Newman [Dr.
J. H. Newman, D.O.] - the osteopath - a pleasant fellow.
I didn't sleep last night - but have got 2 or 3 naps today.
Feel very well just now.
A world of love to all of you
Sincerely, [
370]
8/26/41 "I am taking it as easy as I can, applying the
colonics and getting my sleep brokenly but fairly well. Dr.
Newman, the osteopath, seems to think if I set my head I can
do most of the curing. Anyway I am making the effort.
"My old boss called for me to go out to my old job as Supt.
of County Roads. If the higher powers endorse this I will
try it but at very much less speed than at one time.
"I will continue along this line in the hope I may be spared
to add something to the kingdom of good things."
10/21/41 He requested Life Rdg.
2613-1 for a little girl,
saying: "When I have gotten [
2613] and her mother started on
their true way, I will then ask you to look at me. I feel a
little stronger and have begun a road job again. But I know
what a fight I have to make. Sometimes it is so impossible
to sleep. But I will keep trying."
5/07/42 "Lately I have begun to put on weight with some
growth in strength. So I went down to see Dr. Newman.
There had been 2 M.D.'s who passed me for light work, but I
was thinking it was as before when they missed the trouble.
Anyway, Dr. Newman found 2% sugar in the specimen and pus
also. This sugar is the worst news I have had in some time,
or since '36 [See 370-4]. But I remember the last rdg.
described the condition as serious. Dr. Newman will examine
me in 2 wks. to see further, when I have taken the medicine
he prescribed."
5/11/42 EC's letter: "Glad you have done so well as you
have. Just hope the doctor doesn't begin to experiment with
you and get you worse instead of better. Watch your diet -
not too heavy of meats at your evening meal. Watch out for
your system clogging up; that is, keep the eliminations well
in hand - do take some colonics now and then to keep that
pressure down - they will do just that if properly
administered. If possible don't let them give you shots of
insulin but eat Jerusalem artichokes instead. One eaten
every other day will keep that sugar down. Also you should
leave off all sweets, and should eat lots of fish, broiled.
Cook the artichoke in Patapar paper, save the juices in same
to mix with the pulp of the artichoke."
5/30/42 "I have reduced the 216 lbs. to 210 lbs. in 3 wks.
Also the doctor reports the last analysis he examined last
wk. was clear, which is encouraging.
I have had some interesting experiences trying to find
Jerusalem artichokes, or even a market man who knows what
they are. I bought and ate some from Calif...but found out
later they were not Jerusalem artichokes. But I have found
an Italian marketman who buys them regularly from another
station who raises them... I purpose to continue to look for
truth about proper and nutritious foods. And now, too, my
wife [
1344] is sympathetic toward my desires along this
line."
7/15/42 "I am reading and studying the book, A SEARCH FOR
GOD, to develop Meditation and seek the healing of my body
and mind. The nervousness seems to be improving some and I
hope to overcome this physical and mental inertia. I hope to
be useful to my fellow man and trim my light so it will help
someone."
4/12/43 He requested physical extracts for his wife, Mrs.
[
1344].
5/25/43,
12/22/43, He requested Ck. Physicals for Mr. [
1308].
3/15/44 "One of my hardest battles is restraining this
nervous tension, that is not apparent to my associates, and
that, too, I have been subject to a long time before I asked
for the first rdg. [370-4]. I have come, too, to realize how
much harm was done when I went to a chiropractor to get
colonics and learn about them, and he insisted on me taking
so much vibrating machine treatment and that he insisted he
knew more than you or I about how to treat me. I found when
I finished that there was great strain on my heart which he
couldn't remedy and which your information told me was too
severe for me. This was two yrs. ago. And I have since been
trying to overcome this difficulty and refrain from as much
physical effort as I can avoid. I am gaining a little in the
effort and am hoping to improve as the days go by, and be
ready to do a little good in these strenuous times in which
we live."

370-3 Life Rdg. Reports.
GD's note: The last letter we had from him was
10/15/45. I
think he died a few months after that.
6/11/50 Mr. [
318]'s letter: "One of the patients here [t.b.
sanitarium] is Rev. [...] a Presbyterian minister from ...,
Ala. In 1930 or thereabout Mr. [
370] (now dead), once a
member of the Assoc. and a close friend of Rev. [...] told
him about Mr. Cayce."
