Osteopathic Physician

Mr. Edgar Cayce

My dear Mr. Cayce:
Mr. [
416] has presented himself for treatment and I have read
over his reading carefully. I shall do my best to make the
corrections indicated.
One answer in the reading suggests that my attitude on one
matter is not fully understood, and I would like to use this
opportunity to speak of this.
To the question "What Osteopath would you recommend to give
the treatments?"
The answer is "Richardson," but don't let him talk you into
taking out your tonsils. He will want to do that first -
"Don't do it".
Bless your heart man - I do not take out tonsils. I have
been talking people into NOT having their tonsils out for 15
years. We are in complete agreement here.
Any physician who has practiced 25 years knows that the
tonsils are in a situation constantly exposed to infection
and reinfection, that they are frequently chronically
infected, and that serious local and general consequences may
and do result. And that something must be done about it.
I oppose removal of the tonsils because they serve a purpose
and belong in the body: If diseased they are accessible for
treatment. That is, it is just about as easy to reach and
treat infection of the tonsils as infection of the hand or
arm.
It is also true that infection is destroyed and healed by a
healthy blood stream. It is also true that if the infection
is massive or very virulent it sometimes gets in its deadly
work before these natural forces can be built up to a
beneficent level. For this reason any help that will speed
up these reactions, lighten the burden on the healing powers,
and hasten better feelings, and health is desirable and
appreciated by patients.
If there be pus sacks, abscesses, or plugged crypts in the
tonsils, it is a great help to these natural recuperative
forces if these be opened and the offensive matter allowed
to escape. I do this just as I would make an exit for the
escape of pus in the hands or arms. I take no part of the
tonsil out, I destroy no tonsil tissue. The quick relief of
this dross and its consequent benefits are quickly realized
by patients, and they are grateful for it.
I believe this is a course fully in accord with your ideas,
Always with highest personal regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
M. L. Richardson
6/07/34 EC's letter:
My dear Dr. Richardson:
I appreciate very much yours of the 2nd. But please don't
hold me responsible for some of the things said in the
readings at times.
Thank you very much for your data on the subject, and I hope
to talk with you at the first opportunity regarding things
presented at times through the readings.
I'm glad that you will report the [
533] case for the
Association at the Congress meeting.
I'm sure you will give Mr. [
416] the attention necessary
for his best interests.
We would appreciate any reports you may send us on any of the
cases sent to you. We have referred several, but more often
than otherwise do not know whether they turn up...unless we
do have a report from you. We've had some very remarkable
reports lately from osteopaths in other parts of the country,
on cases we have sent to them; Dr. Dobbins in New York, Soden
in Philadelphia, Woodall in Birmingham, Kapple in Chicago,
etc. So, as far as our Association is concerned, I'm sure
the work is very much worth while - and it is a whole lot
bigger than any individual or it isn't what we think it is.
Thanking your for your letter, and with all good wishes, I am
Sincerely,
Edgar Cayce [EC:GD]
