12/27/33 Gray Salter's battery directions for Mrs. [
465]:
1. Unpack the battery and wash the jar clean and wipe with
a clean cloth. Be sure to get all foreign substances out
of it.
2. Fill the jar with 1 and 1/2 gallons of distilled water
(measure out with a glass quart jar).
3. Next add the chemicals in this order (IMPORTANT: Keep
in this order):
#1 - 1 lb. Copper Sulphate (lump)
#2 - 1 ounce Sulphuric Acid
#3 - Common Zinc Metal 10.6 grams
#4 - 1/2 lb. Willow Charcoal
These are named in order and all included but the Sulphuric
Acid. This cannot be shipped except under special permit
and is not with the battery. It can be obtained at any
drug store in the quantity desired.
In re-charging (which should be every thirty days) the
chemicals can be purchased cheaper at some drug store than
by packing and shipping.
The Zinc can be brought from any tin shop or metal works
shop and cut in small pieces and the druggist will weigh
it for you.
The weights and order are listed above.
At the time of re-charging empty the jar and wash clean,
then dry. Clean all corrosion from the poles by use of
emery cloth and if necessary use a file but clean off all
the deposit that will be found on them.
Then re-charge as has been outlined.
The solutions for the medication jars should also be changed
and fresh solution put into them at each re-charge.
The Camphor is the ordinary Spirits of Camphor - 8 oz.
The Atomidine is obtained from Virginia Beach (4 oz. $2.00).
4. After the last chemical (the Willow Charcoal) is put in
the jar, stir the solution with a clean stick, the allow to
stand for half a day.
The top should be put on the jar as soon as you finish
stirring and the wires inside the box connected to the slips
on the jar top. IMPORTANT: Keep the positive on the side
marked with X and the negative on the side marked - .
Close the top to the box and fasten the hasp, then set the
battery in the place it is to be used and do not move it
until ready to re-charge.
5. The solutions for the medication vials should be put into
the glass stoppered vial upon arrival, and the glass stopper
inserted until ready to use.
FOR USE: Insert the U shaped wire into whichever solution
is to be used, then insert the rubber stopper with the
groves to hold it in place. (Do not mix these stoppers, as
one should be used for each bottle.)
This should be done before attaching to either the patient
or the battery.
There are also two leads, one for each solution, and these
are to be used only in one of the solutions.
6. In applying to the patient, always fasten the plates to
the patient first making the connection firm to the flesh.
The one being attached to the back can be held in place
better by folding a towel and placing it over the plate
just as the patient lies down.
Do not let silk or rayon come in contact with the plates.
7. Adhere to the part of the reading directing the use of
this battery.
8. The positive is always attached to the body first, the
negative last; and the period of time is counted from the
time the last connection is made.
The connection is made by loosening the terminal on the
box and inserting the tip on the end of the wire into the
slot, then securing the terminal back tight upon it.
The copper plate is the positive (X) and the nickel and
one carrying the medication is the negative (-).
9. After each treatment remove the U wire from medication
and wipe it clean. Keep this bright and free from corrosion
by use of emery cloth.
Also keep the plates clean by using emery cloth.
Always keep glass stoppers in vials when not in use.
