This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. Mitchell Hastings, 410 Park Avenue, New York City, this 20th day of January, 1934, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [493], new Associate Member of the Ass'n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by [443].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body, [493], here.
2. Now, as we find, there are many conditions that are contributory causes, and many effects that at times have been attributed to be causes. But the greater disturbance is from the glandular activity in the system and the effects that have been produced from and through this disturbance.
3. These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body, [493] we are speaking of, present in this room:
4. In the BLOOD SUPPLY we find an impoverished condition, produced not only by the inability of proper oxidization through the lungs from the disorders but the improper elements for the replenishing or resuscitating the activities of the system through the condition existent in more of the glands' inability for activity, through repressions that have existed for some time - that have been lost sight of entirely. For, there existed in times back a repression in the lower dorsal and cervical area that has made for an impoverishment to the lacteals in their ability to supply the proper nourishments for making divisions in that assimilated. Hence the condition may be termed an impoverishment of blood, rather than anemic. While these are not wholly synonymous, we have the effect of same often in the activities in the body.
5. As to the NERVE FORCES, these are rather reflex than causes; though, to be sure, where subluxations have been a contributory or a primary cause of the disorder that has affected the organs and their functioning, and allowing outside influences - or the creating of forces in the supply of the body in such an extent, the nerve condition by repression may be called the CONTRIBUTORY rather than the whole or first primary cause.
6. As to the effects that these conditions have had and do produce in the body, in the present some are not so active or so severe in their reaction to the system. But to find that which agrees with the body in its diet, that which will build up the body and make for greater resistances, that which will clarify the lungs or that which will aid in making for the system those proper reactions in the glands - that have so much to do with disturbances - is to meet or to make for the proper changes in the system.
7. The head at times becomes affected, especially through the soft tissue in the various channels or portions of body; as does the throat and the lungs in their reaction, from the impoverishment that has existed and does exist, making an irregularity in the heart's action and a subnormal temperature; and the liver and the spleen naturally become involved in their turn, in the varied conditions that arise from a constitutional or a specific disorder that makes for constitutional disturbances. The liver in its activity is rather cold; a natural result of impoverishment, but subnormal here - even to that - making for a hepatic circulation that changes often very rapidly, and making for a rise of temperature that becomes very weakening, and destroying more of the forces that produce proper coagulation where used tissue is involved in activity; making a weakness that is exhausting at times, and at others an activity that others would say was beyond the strength or vitality of the body.
8. Then, in meeting the needs, as we would find for this body, [493] we are speaking of, present in this room, first we would use two very active forces in those reactions to the pulmonaries and to the supply of the blood that exists in the system in the present:
9. We would use the inhalant from apple brandy, that might be taken into the lungs by breathing in the gases that come off from a quantity of same in a charred container that would be kept corked and warm - yet a tube in same so that the fumes taken into the lungs will not only make for a purification of the cells themselves but will aid in a stimulation that would be added to the abilities of the system (in its present reaction).
10. The latter would be found in the use of the Animated or Carbonated Ash that would be taken once every other day.
11. The inhalant from the apple brandy we would take two or three times each day, breathing deep into the lower portion of the lungs, that there may be the cleansing in the form of not exactly an expectorant but an allaying of the tendency for inflammation that arises; searing, as it were, and aiding in coagulation in the area.
12. The Ash would be ionized in the system by the application of the plain violet ray three to five minutes after Ash is taken, causing it to be drawn to those portions of the body on which we would apply the violet ray to act as a stimulation to the circulation in the exterior portions, or superficial circulation of both the exterior and anterior portions of the body. We would apply the violet ray, then, over the area from the 4th and 5th cervical to the 8th and 9th dorsal, for three to five minutes; using the plain bulb applicator.
13. We would also begin with the properties that may be maintained in the system by the careful watching of the diet, that there may be builded the resistances:
14. Take quantities of the concentrated solution of beef juices, or the concentrated beef juice, but very small quantities at the time in the beginning. Not the meat itself, but the juices that may be had from clean cut LEAN beef, only the juice squeezed out and seasoned to make palatable to the body. Take two teaspoonsful or a tablespoonful three or four times each day, but this sipped - not gulped, for it will act with the digestive forces and make for a replenishing and a rebuilding that has NOT existed for times past with the body.
15. We would also begin, by the second week, with manipulations and corrections osteopathically given in the lower dorsal and lumbar area. Not that there is not to be a coordinating in the hypogastric and pneumogastric areas of the body, or through the upper dorsal and cervical area, but this would be the differentiation between the applications of the adjustments and the general manipulations; and here we find subluxations and lesions that have been so aiding or additional in the contributory causes of gland disturbances.
16. When the gland disturbances are being corrected, also we would take small doses of the atomic iodine (Atomidine) that will make for a particular functioning of the glands themselves. In the beginning we would take one drop in half a glass of water twice each day. On the third day increase to three drops to be taken twice each day. Three days later increase to five drops to be taken twice each day. Then leave off for five days. Then begin again with the smaller quantity.
17. Properties that have been taken by the body that are body BUILDING, keep. Those that have been as allaying, or as of other applications, we would ease off from - until these applications, these adjustments, these changes have had the opportunity to become effective by their use.
18. When these have been carried out for twenty-six days, as we find, we will see an entire change in the reaction for this body, and we would then give further advice for the body.
19. The manipulations and adjustments osteopathically should be taken - when they are begun - at least twenty such treatments, and twice each week.
20. Ready for questions.
21. (Q) Would it be well for the body to wait to begin this series of treatments until she returns from a contemplated six weeks trip?
    (A) If the vitality and the resistances are sufficient to wait for such period, well. There may be begun the stimulations in the beef juices, or the Ash with this - even on the trip. These would be very well to prevent the taxation to the system proving too detrimental to the body. But preferably these should be begun as soon as practical.
22. (Q) If she should take the trip, the beef juices, the Ash and violet ray are all of the treatment that she should use?
    (A) All at this time, for these will make for the building of the greater resistance WITH that the body has to build on at present, see? For, the corrections will in their very activity not make for weakening of the body, but for that ability of the body not to use its strength as extravagantly as it has been under the conditions, see? Hence, if the body makes the trip, the osteopathic treatments should wait.
23. (Q) Will you outline a good diet for the body?
    (A) Diets have been so changed for this body. As we would give, until there has been at least those periods when other suggestions may be given, the good wholesome diet should be followed; for these have been found to be disagreeable to the body at times, but that easily assimilated - keeping the eliminations through the alimentary canal, of course, as normal as may be kept by the activities of the body. We would keep the wholesome diet.
24. (Q) Is smoking harmful for this body?
    (A) Not in moderation. Moderation would be from three to five smokes each day.
25. (Q) Is drinking harmful for this body?
    (A) Until there are changes, or until there is something builded for the body to make for resistances much better in the system, if any is taken it should be rather SMALL quantities.
26. (Q) Wines or liqueurs preferable?
    (A) Liqueurs are preferable to wines, for the body. Wines tend to make for an activity with the gastric forces that is not as well for this body as liqueurs.
27. (Q) Will you suggest anything regarding climate as affecting the condition of this body?
    (A) If these applications are made, climatic conditions - except the very severe or the inaptitudes of the body in making exposures of self unnecessarily - would not make a great deal of difference. Naturally, the inclinations under such disorders as from impoverishment are to require as much air to be taken as possible. Hence a climatic condition that is neither too severe nor too warm, but something of a higher altitude - or in those surroundings where salt air and sands may be found, where there is the near normal run of temperature for the outdoor activities of the body, would be well. But not where it is damp or where there are repressions for the system. For, it is a repression that HAS produced the tendencies for inactivity to the glands.
    Build the blood supply, build the resistance for the system, and we will have a strong, healthy body.
28. (Q) Has the sinus anything to do with this condition?
    (A) The sinus disorder is a result, NOT a cause.
29. (Q) What glands in the body are affected?
    (A) As indicated, the greater repression has been to the lacteals. Naturally the adrenal, the thyroid, all of those glands that are ductless in their nature are affected; but those that we need to act upon the more principally are in the lacteal ducts and glands that make for the activity in this particular action of the system.
30. (Q) If this treatment as suggested is followed, will the body be completely relieved?
    (A) As we will find, if this is followed as outlined, and with the second change that may be necessary - which will be according to how the reactions have been to the body - we will find in nine to ten months a perfectly healthy, normal body, with no recurrent conditions; for there will be created a balance.
    Do these, then.

    (1/20/34 Notations by GD: Directions for following reading:
    Put 1/2 gallon apple brandy in a gallon or gallon and a half wooden keg, with rubber tube inserted for inhaling. Keep keg on radiator or warm place, so that the fumes that form in the vacuum may be inhaled into the nostrils and mouth two or three times daily.
    The Animated or Carbonated Ash may be obtained in 1/4 grain capsules from B. H. Bradley, 5443 Maryland Ave., Chicago, Ill. You are to divide each capsule and just take 1/8 grain every other day. Empty the powder on tongue and wash down with water. Do not take the Ash IN capsule.
    About 15 to 20 minutes following the Ash, apply the plain hand violet ray machine for 3 to 5 minutes over the areas indicated.
    DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING PURE BEEF JUICE
    Put small chunks raw beef in covered fruit jar. Put jar inside pan of water (water coming to about half the depth of jar). Boil until chunks of beef are thoroughly done. Strain. Keep juice in cool place. Take as directed.
    For the osteopathic corrections and manipulations, we would recommend Dr. Frank Dobbins, 551 Fifth Avenue, New York City, who has experience with following the reading and has gotten results thereby. However, the osteopathic treatments should not begin until two weeks after the other treatments have been begun.
    The Atomidine is manufactured by Schieffelin & Co., New York. Take as directed in the reading.
    In twenty-six days after beginning treatments, let us get a check-up reading to offer further suggestions for changes, etc.
