7/17/35,
7/20/35 She and father submitted questions about
advisability of sending her to Still-Hildreth Osteopathic
[Macon, Mo.] Sanatorium or having surgery by Dr. George
Crile, M.D., Cleveland, O. [cutting nerves to the adrenal
glands, first on left side, then removing portion of the
thyroid gland, and this again followed by cutting of the
nerves on the right side]. However, both Miss [
543]'s
parents had written asking that he approve the Dr. Crile
method. EC also consciously seemed in favor of it, since
543-1 had suggested surgery [hysterectomy, as we thought at
the time].
REPORTS
8/03/35 Miss [
543]'s letter en route to the Cleveland, Ohio
clinic: "Strange that this wonderful place of Dr. Crile's
(for this kind of trouble) has just been located." See
7/14/35 Mr. [
1212]'s letter under
543-23 Reports saying that
Dr. Crile "had been performing these operations for about
four years".
8/06/35 Mother's letter: "[
543] asked me this morning before
she was operated on to write you of the event. At 9:30 she
went into the operating room and did not come back to her
room before 10:40. "She was operated on the left side,
somewhere near the spine, which is spoken of as a denervation
operation. She stood the operation well, I was informed,
taking glucose as the operations of this kind require it, I
was told.
"The hospital is the best organized one I have ever seen -
sometime as many as 300 being admitted a day.
"[
543] is getting splendid attention from the floor nurses in
a ward with three others. I shall let you hear occasionally
her condition.
"You have always been so interested and sweet to her. Pray
with me that this is the operation you spoke of [in
543-1]
which will relieve [
543] of her trouble."
9/27/35 Miss [
543] wrote from Cleveland where she had been
taken for the second operation: "Dr. Crile is considered by
the medical profession the 2nd best in the world in this line
of work - also for goitres. He has operated on about 500 so
far for epilepsy...he's only been doing this line of work for
3-4 yrs. He clips the nerves with his fingers after the
incision is made. His fingers are just that sensitive! and
he's the only one in the Hospital who does it. He's 70."
9/30/35 Mother's card: "[
543] had her operation today at
11:00 A.M. She is getting on nicely - condition good. She,
as well as I, was eager for this last operation. We both
rejoice that it is over. She sends love."
2/06/36 Miss [
543]'s letter to EC: "Thank you for your
Christmas card. It was lovely and your making it, or someone
there doing it, makes it dearer to me. [See under
979-7,
Par. R5.] I shall keep it with other things you have sent to
me which I often take out and re-read...
"I am some better; after six months Dr. Crile thinks there'll
be a decided improvement. I do hope so...
"I'd like another physical rdg. when you feel fit. Don't
know just when I'd pay you but will sometime before this
coming summer. You see, my sister...will be married in the
late spring. I have to have some money for her present. I
will pay you, though, so don't worry about not getting it."
3/09/36 EC wrote making the appointment, saying: "[
543],
please don't think of pay when it comes to our possibly being
of a help; am only too glad to try and help."
3/17/36 Wire: "Sorry - please delay reading engagement until
notified. Letter follows. Love."
6/27-30/36 Miss [
543] and her father, Mr. [
1212], attended
the Fifth Annual Congress of A.R.E.
7/06/36 See father's rdg.
1212-1 advising that a Christian
Science or Unity nurse care for [
543] in [
543]'s own home but
apart from family to avoid friction with [
543]'s mother, etc.
7/19/36 See Miss [
954]'s letter under
954-1 [Reports],
writing about the Congress: "Could anyone see little [
543]
and not hold her in the heart to comfort her?"
9/08/36 EC's letter to Miss [
543]: Pa told me, [
543], that
you wanted us to make an appointment for you for a check
reading. Can make this for you on the 15th in the afternoon;
that is a week from today. Let us know if that is
satisfactory time, also send any questions that you may wish
for that time. Were you able to get some one to be with you
as suggested in the last reading [1212-1]? Do they read the
key to the scriptures to you? How are you feeling and how
have you been getting along since you were here? Have you
been able to put on any more weight as yet? Would love to
see you and talk with you.
9/12/36 "Dearest Brother... I haven't had a rdg. since
7/23/35 [543-24] and in that it mentioned nothing about my
having any companion. If I had a rdg., Brother, I never
rec'd it... No, my companion isn't a Christian Scientist.
Just what did you mean by their reading the key to the
scriptures to me? They don't do same... I feel a good deal
better and like my companion, who is a graduate nurse,
greatly. I met her when I went to Staunton to The DeJarnette
State Sanitarium this spring. We became fast friends. Then,
too, I have to have someone here with me so Mother can go out
to some extent. She was very nervous and badly needed a
change and some rest, which she never will take when at home;
so we prevailed on her to go to NYC and visit sister...which
she did for 2 wks...has a small apt. and of course does
her own work. She has learned to cook...
"I have not weighed but I believe I have gained some pounds."
