12/03/42 Letter from [
2843] to EC: "...I have wanted to write
you and thank the power vested in you for the great benefit
the suggestions have been to [
630]. It is very plain to me
now that I should have insisted on her taking sick leave when
she was home for couple of days in April. She was a sick
child then, but thought she had to return to duty after
getting her glasses checked. She needed many days for it,
instead of two or three. There is no telling what the
improvement would have been if she had been home to carry out
the suggestions, because when she did come the 15th of August
she was ill from nervous exhaustion. She remained over three
months and the change was marvelous. When I had my fall,
which I regretted as much on her account as my own, because I
didn't want anything on her mind of an unpleasant nature and
she did take charge and tried to make comfortable. There
were a few days I was not able to massage her back. She said
it was interesting to notice the difference it made.
"Even here we couldn't carry out the suggestions fully as to
diet. I wrote all over the country trying to get artichokes
for her. Just the last month they came into market here.
"[
630] is quiet about her affairs. I didn't see the reading.
I wished her to get a check reading before she left, but they
called her back earlier than she expected to leave. We do
wish a copy of There Is A River but it will be known as
[
630]'s. She mentioned she would try to get one. Hope you
sell a million..."
8/19/43 Mother [
2843]'s letter: "...She [
630] has been put
in charge of the Army Emergency Relief Organization, in
Indiana, where she lives. She is humbly proud of this
responsibility because she is happiest when she is doing
something for someone. She was fortunate enough to find a
furnished cottage and likes keeping house to the fullest.
"I learned from the book (THERE IS A RIVER) what the
artichokes were used for. I can never be thankful enough for
the suggestions given. As soon as she was coming back to
life, so to speak, and progressing, I lost my equilibrium
[see 2843-3]."
5/15/49 Mother [
2843] wrote that [
630], now Mrs. [...], is at
home recuperating from a very serious eye operation.
