8/30/34 Father [
370]'s letter:
..., Ala.
My dear Mr. Cayce; -
I have your letter with the very reserved but true comments
on the reading for my son [
640]. I am impressed as I have
been before of the power that is behind that reserve, or
sometimes called modest expression, that is characteristic of
so many of your acts, sayings and writings. This comes to me
in bold relief that you can understand in me when I say I was
ELATED, stimulated, enthused, and overjoyed when I got the
life reading and read its contents. Then I found a response
in the boy as we read it together (with explanations as we
went through) - suitable to that quiet boy's reserve but
understanding mind. I think, as I read that he had a deeper
understanding of all of it, that I could fathom.
Then I seemed to arouse a responsive chord in his sister (18)
[
1243] who will soon be applying for a life reading. If I
could presume to make a like comparison between the loving
kindness that is POWERFUL in John and the rough impulsive
Peter I would make the resemblance that you have to John.
The nearest I can come to Peter is that I love the same Lord.
But back to the reading - it is a revelation to me and
confirms my own indefinite thinking about the boy. I have
always felt that there was hidden powers in him of a mystical
nature that was fraught with possibilities for weal or woe.
No wonder at my joy at the clear expression of how this may
be incorporated in his life to lead others - "a hope to thy
fellow man, a prop to those that falter and stumble, a refuge
to those that are troubled in body and mind."
[
640] first began to really show the first enthusiasm in
study in his last year in high school in the study of
Chemistry. It is his interest here that inspired me to
attempt to enter him in Vandy, even in the face of seeming
prohibitive difficulties. However I have had some
encouragement from friends to make every attempt available.
I am encouraged further by the sympathetic aid of Dean
Fred J. Sirvis of the Engineering Dept. and now am engaged in
placing him in some place of self aid through Mr. Hart of the
Student Y.M.C.A. Such things were done in my day 30 years
ago and though the budget is greater now I have hopes that he
will be entered. His father cannot furnish any of the
finance but he [
640] will be able to borrow something and
work out the remainder. Best of all he is willing to do
anything in order to go to school.
Does it strike you as unusual to find an appearance here in
Alabama at so recent a time? What was so interesting to me
was his appearance in the "tented city built in the hills and
plains" in Persia. And then in Atlantis as a priest of "One"
and in Egypt. This was very close to things I have been so
much interested in. Besides Mrs. [
272] copied recently the
history of Uhjltd in Persia and Ra-Ta in Egypt. Just to
think that the events of Egypt are being repeated here with
us again. Oh! Mr. Cayce you must take care of yourself -
for the people of this country and this world have so much
need of you and your work. I am praying that I may be of
more use to the work. I feel that I am derelict when I think
of what [
640] has and the help others have had through life
Readings - that I have not had my own done. It is my next
objective as soon as [
640] is cared for. I know of others
that will be interested too.
8/29/35 Father [
370]'s letter: "No, no way has opened for
[
640] to go to Vanderbilt Univ. as yet, but am hoping it will
by Christmas. Anyway, it is an important unfinished task.
He has grown strong physically, though time is heavy on his
hands at times. However, he puts most of it in at tennis,
baseball, swimming, and among the young folks near about."
9/12/35 Mr. [
370] requested his own Life Rdg. See
370-3.
8/06/36 Mr. [
370] obtained Life Rdg. for his daughter, Miss
[
1243].
3/11/41 Father [
370] wrote: "My children ([
1243] and [
640]
and [...]) are married off and the old place is not like it
used to be."
4/01/43 "My boy [
640] has finished his preflight training at
Montgomery and now goes to Tuscaloosa for base training. He
has passed all those physical tests so far and his academic
grade was 94. He seems to make good with his superiors and
is on his way to be a pilot. He really wanted to know how to
fly and this speeds his progress. I hope he comes to know
you sometime, somewhere."
12/12/44 Father's letter asked us to put his son, Lt. [
640],
on the A.R.E. mailing list for Bulletin, Weekly Letters, etc:
"He is the pilot and officer in charge of a humming crew on a
Liberator B-24 that has just been made up and training
together at this base [Charleston, S.C.]. Just last week he
wired for his wife and 2 babies, so I feel he will be at this
base for a while. He is beginning to realize, by his
letters, that he has a great responsibility for his crew. He
has read THERE IS A RIVER, and has heard me talk of Mr. Cayce
and the work. We had a Life Rdg. for him early in the 30's,
but a great deal of water has gone over the dam since then.
He has already had an 'experience' in his flying career, also
has had some 'miraculous' deliverances...
"I am anxious to get him directly connected with the group at
Va. Beach... I think he belongs to our crowd... [
640] has
always been a leader among his boy friends. Everyone seems
to like him. As he relates, it is interesting how he found
an apt. in a crowded city for himself, wife and babies. He
boarded a bus and rode to the suburbs - followed his
inclinations and walked to the first house and, without
hesitation, the very fine lady engaged him rooms."
4/03/45 Mr. [or, rather, Lt.] [
640] sent us a change of
address for his mailings overseas.
10/15/45 Father's ltr.: "We are living in the anticipated
joy of seeing our boy [
640] any day now coming back from
flying the 'Hump', and the joy of having him, his fine young
wife and two small children with us again."
