1/23/35 Mother's ltr.: "[
653] has been in Selma visiting
Mother [
979] for 4 wks. I let her go thinking the change
would do her good and perhaps her nerves would get better. I
am very much worried about her too; ever since the accident
several years ago she has been going through it at night
every little while. She screams and yells to turn the wheel
and jumps right out of bed and when I try to hold her or wake
her she beats me most to death sometimes, she is so strong.
She wrote a few days ago that she most frightened a girl
friend to death the other night, she was spending the night
at this girl's house and in the night she screamed and jumped
out of bed, sat down on the floor and held onto the bedpost
as tight as she could and it was a long time before they
could get her awake, and she fights so. I'm afraid she will
lose her mind. While I was so weak and sick she had so many
spells and kept me awake so, as she sleeps with me and she
beat me so. When she comes back home will you please give
her a rdg. and tell me what to do for her. I did all the
things you told me to do before and she got better for a
while, but now seems to be getting worse and her face is a
sight, it is so broken out."
2/08/35 Mother's ltr.: "[
653] is back now. Her little
vacation seemed to help her, but she isn't right somehow.
Her monthly periods are very irregular, some months she
doesn't menstruate at all and some times she menstruates
for 2 wks. at a time but very little each day, and ever since
she has been back she has complained of a pain in the left
side of her back just below the waist, sort of a crick or
catch. And she says she still has those spells at night
[when she relives the accident]."
3/06/35 Mother's ltr.: "Last month she was in bed for 3 days
with a crick in her back and was very sick at her stomach."
