First there must be rather a cultivation - not so much as a
social, but cultivate a congeniality with those in authority
in and about the museum. And as the studies progress for the
needs or the channels or the fields of service, where there
may be obtained or attained the necessary links of evidence
in this or that channel of activity to which the entity fits
- or there is the calling or the urge within for the
assisting in completing in this or that direction, be in the
position that when such preparations are made, such organized
researches are to be done, there may be the suggestion to
those in authority that the body, [
670], be included in or
among those that are to represent not only some activity of
such researchers or such archaeological group or
organization, but is able, through the abilities and studies,
to be of a service to such groups - and also of service to
the Institute itself that may be a portion - through its
research - of such groups.
These ways and manners. Much of these are laid out then as a
plan. As to application of self in the various manners in
which these necessary links for the various concepts are
being followed in any of the fields of activity, these must
be studied by the entity himself. Applications not as an
authority, but GROWING to that end. For if there is the
correct application, why may not the entity in some portion
of its experience become an authority upon researches in
fields of such activities? and thus, through MANY a channel
FULFIL much that HAS been and may be given in archaeological
researches that will not only complete many of those studies
and form many of the links between the various civilizations
in the various activities, but much of those proofs that are
necessary in the field of study of EVERY direction may be a
part of the entity's work.
Ready for questions.
(Q) Is there any immediate change that I should make, to
further and hasten my training?
(A) No immediate change save selecting in which group or
which line of endeavor, whether those that will become active
upon the field - as has been suggested - or whether it would
remain as one who would act in the capacity of preparing the
data for the study of others; or those of the greater
research upon the field - which as we find for the entity
will be more appealing, than remaining within.
(Q) What department in the Museum would provide the best
opportunity for me?
(A) That as indicated that makes for the research not only
of the filling in but what may be termed the field work.
(Q) Are there any other contacts I should make?
(A) As indicated, let the closer associations be by making
the self indispensable, as it were, in a manner, to those in
authority; these will carry, through the suggestions here and
there, as the discussion on the various subjects may arise,
by the activities in the various fields. You are on the
right road, in the right place, in the right channels, the
right connections; and where these connections for field
activity may be made.
We are through for the present.

REPORTS
8/09/36 Mr. [
333]'s letter: "[
670] is going on with his
struggle and gaining a little headway from day to day. We
watch him and keep praying for him. I know he appreciates
what you have done for him and that he will write and tell
you all about it in his own way, but for me to tell him that
he should write would not do."
9/04/36 "[
670] has been advanced in his work though he still
gets no money for his work. He is now restoring some
wonderful and valuable pottery from Honduras and he works
daily with Dr. Strong who dug it up. [
670] has been
complimented on his skill at this kind of work by several of
the prominent men in Smithsonian."
9/14/36 "[
670] has been out for the last three days on his
first 'diggings'. Indian burials in Va. a short distance
from D.C. but best of all he has been associating with the
biggest men from Smithsonian in this work."
1/07/37 "[
670] has been so fortunate in his work and
associations at the Smithsonian. Dr. Judd has proven to be
such a wonderful friend and has taken such an interest in
[
670] whom he thinks a lot of. He has taken him to his club
for dinner and to the Geographic Society lectures. [
670] is
now on the Geographic Society payroll through an
appropriation rec'd by Dr. Judd for work at Smithsonian. Not
very much but a help nevertheless."
3/13/37 Mr. [
670]'s letter: "I am still working in the
laboratory of Anthropology at the Nat'l Museum. For the last
couple of months I have been getting my first compensation
...this makes it possible for me to enclose money order for
ten dollars. Sorry I could not send it sooner, but I will
send you a few dollars now and then, when I can."
4/02/37 "It gives me a great pleasure to enclose M/O for
$5... The various depts. at the museum are preparing for
their field work. Nothing would please me more than to
accompany an archaeological field group."
10/19/37 "Once again I turn to you for help in a time of
need. The Geographic Society appropriation ran out the last
of Sept., and I feel that it is time for me to make another
step toward archaeological field work. I am undecided as to
what contacts would be most favorable. I want to make the
best possible use of the experience I have acquired."
