4/29/36 Ltr. from C. Rudolph Malnberg, Editor, of the
THE PROGRESSIVE THINKER, 106 South Loomis Street, CHICAGO:
Mrs. [
689],
Washington, D.C.
My dear Mrs. [
689]:
"I was more than glad to receive your letter with reference
to the manuscripts you have of Mr. Colville's. Quite some
time ago Mr. Grumbine mentioned to me that he had a friend
in Washington, D.C., who had manuscripts of Mr. Colville's
which might be used for publication. It would be too bad
to have writings of Mr. Colville's lie unused and where they
would not be of any value to those who would be interested
in them.
"The Progressive Thinker is the only weekly spiritualist
paper now published in this country and it is the most
liberal paper of its kind. While it is an advocate of
all things pertaining to Spiritualism, yet it also
includes advanced thought and subjects germain to it.
"The other two papers are small monthly papers; one is the
official organ of the National Spiritualist Association;
their subscription list is very small and rather limited:
whereas, The Progressive Thinker has already had over
forty-six (46) years of active service and continued work for
the active cause of Spiritualism.
"Mrs. Cadwallader, who passed away in December, 1934,
left The Progressive Thinker with the hope that it would
be continued, and to run as a Spiritualist advocate. While
times have been extremely hard, we are glad to say that we
are getting along splendidly and have many plans for the near
future. It is our aim to make The Progressive Thinker the
leading center of all things pertaining to Spiritualism.
"Three large libraries have already come into our possession:
they were those of Colonel Van Horn, Dr. George Brown,
Mrs. Mary Longley, and many books and manuscripts that
belonged to Mrs. Cadwallader. These form the nucleus of
one of the most outstanding Spiritualist and Occult libraries
in this country. We have unpublished manuscripts by some
of the early workers.
"We would be more than glad to also procure Mr. Colville's
manuscript for the benefit of the Spiritualists and would
not like to see them go into the hands of people who would
not be interested in them, and perhaps become entirely lost.
"Won't you kindly let us know what remuneration you would ask
for Mr. Colville's manuscripts, scrap-books, etc.
"We have many photographs of the early workers which have
been placed in permanent form and have already been used at
the Sesquicentennial in Philadelphia, the Century of
Progress, in Chicago, and during the International
Spiritualist Conference held two years ago.
"We really believe that all of this material can be kept in
permanent form here, better than anywhere else that we know
of.
"A number of years ago, I met Mr. Colville and enjoyed his
series of lectures and a splendid visit with him. I have
a number of books in my own library and have always thought
very highly of his writings.
"We will be more than glad to hear from you and will abide
by whatever decision you make with reference to compensation.
Appreciating your letter and with sincere good wishes, I am"
Yours very truly,
[signed] C. Rudolph Malnberg, Editor
