12/04/26 "Well, Cayce, it looks as if the whole works and
our plans and wishes have been completely torn up. I am
enclosing an exact copy of the letter I rec'd from my
company, which happens to be written on the same date
[
11/18/26] I wrote you about chucking my work.
['Dear Mr. [
779]: No doubt within the past few months you
have thought seriously of resigning your position with this
company in order to take up employment that will enable you
to live with your family.
'Furthermore, you have undoubtedly realized that we are not
getting our share of the Western business, and while you are
not to blame entirely, of course we believe you will agree
with us that we should get more business in the territory
you cover.
'In view of the above, it is our opinion that you should
resign, effective not later than Dec. 31st. Should you make
a connection that will need your service prior to the end
of this year we would be willing to release you at any time.
Moreover, if we can be of any assistance to you in this
connection it will give us pleasure to aid you in any way
possible.
'Not everyone is adapted to road work and the quicker one
finds and does the work for which he has talent, it is of
course that much better for him. The dealers with whom we
have talked without exception, say that your conduct has
been exemplary and you have shown yourself to be a gentleman
in every sense of the word, which, of course, is a record
to be proud of. We have thoroughly enjoyed knowing and
working with you and regret that it seems best to sever our
connections, but really believe that we are doing you a favor
and you will soon, if you do not now, take this viewpoint.
'With the very best wishes for your success in whatever work
you undertake, and again assuring you of our willingness to
aid you in every way possible, we are, [...]']
"Now the reason I am sending you this copy is that it tells
you just what has happened, and just what I did upon
receiving it. I wrote my resignation promptly, effective
Dec. 15, 1926, in order that I would have a little time
to try and locate something to do by the first of the year,
but this was the greatest surprise I have ever had and it
was a real shock to myself and Mrs. [
780], and I know it
will be to you, because I know you have been very interested
in helping me and to see just how it would work out. So you
may know that I am at a real loss to know just why and what
caused this condition to come about. No, I can't see what
it all means, only in the reading it says that the change
would come within
6-8 months, but I can't believe it meant
this way, do you?..." [He submitted questions.]
