2/09/31 EC's reply to Mr. [
779]'s shocked letter of
1/26/31:
I have yours of the 26th. Conditions have been, and are, so
very unsettled that it is almost impossible for me to attempt
to explain them in any shape, form or fashion. I don't KNOW
what to expect, I don't know what has been the change of
attitude, I don't know why they insist they do not want
people to come to the hospital. Still they maintain
something of a staff. I don't know why they won't
communicate with me direct. I don't know why they don't say
what they want to do, so I'd know how to explain it to
anyone. It seems like it might be in direct opposition to
everything we have felt, thought and considered, the work
itself does stand for, and - as some have said - we cannot
understand how it creates such unsettled circumstances in the
lives of those so vitally interested. Apparently, it isn't
the fault of the information, for where it is adhered to - in
other places and surroundings - the results are obtained.
Those who are allowed to come to the institution by the day
are getting results, and results - as I have always been led
to believe - are the proof positive. Just as He said
Himself, "If you can't believe my words, believe for the very
work's sake." Fruits bespeak the real worth. Whether it's
just hard times, just a change of attitude through being able
to get information from other sources - I just can't say. We
are hoping that conditions will straighten themselves out as
they are financially able to carry on, for they have
seemingly desired to do this.
I'm sorry to hear that things are in such a sad way for
yourself. I don't know what to offer as a suggestion, in any
way. I only wish that we were close enough together to talk
matters over. We might be of some help to one another.
In the last few months they have been gradually holding up
the contributions to this office, in the way of salaries.
This has made it very embarrassing from many angles. Whether
this is done to bring pressure on me, to make me feel that I
cannot do without their contributions, so that they can make
a demand from me or from the source, I don't know. I'm the
"don't knowingest fellow" you ever saw! I must say, however,
there seems to be enthusiasm in the gatherings for the talks
which I make every other Sunday afternoon. Whether this is
from real interest, or from a desire to just see what's going
on, it is sometimes hard to judge - but the paper locally is
willing to publish the articles, and to see some interest
shown in that direction is quite remarkable.
H. H. Jones [GD's note: Mr. H. H. Jones was a friend of Mr.
[
779]; he later became President of the new A.R.E. granted a
charter
7/06/31.] was out a few evenings ago to talk with us.
He has been out since to talk with Hugh Lynn, who is still
assisting at the library at the school - which is by the skin
of its teeth staying open. Jones was at the lecture Sunday
and told me he didn't expect to miss another one.
Drop me a line. I don't like to be constantly talking about
hard lines, and all that - but I don't know anything else
right now. I don't know when I'm not going to have a house
to live in. I don't know when anything is liable to happen.
It's awful!
With best love to all,
Ever the same,

254-54 Reports.
3/21/31 Mr. [
779]'s reply to EC's letter and
254-54: "The
purpose of the organization, as I see it, will be to be of
aid to the ailments of the body, mind and soul of man,
helping him to gain a better insight as to his relations with
his Creator, and to impel him towards the practice of the
virtues of life.
"It is hard to say just how this work should be presented to
others or to the public. I would imagine it would be better
presented through each individual's interest and efforts.
Seems as if the true nature, ideals and purposes of the
organization could be published in good periodicals, also if
those splendid lectures you give could be arranged by radio
it would be effective in reaching individuals, classes and
masses, and cause many to become interested in the work. I
may be wrong, but the people or public will accept this thing
after they are sold on the subject. They must be informed
before they become interested. They will have become
interested before they are sold. When sold they will sell
others.
"Now it seems from the information [
254-54] that the Manager
requires such qualifications that the average man doesn't
have. He must understand the conditions, circumstances,
etc., and at the same time be a good business man, and, I am
sure, one who knows something of the wishes and desires of
the leader.
"So, with such qualifications, I know of no better person
than Hugh Lynn Cayce. He may not have had a great deal of
business experience, but he certainly, in my opinion, has the
other qualifications. He is well educated and well
understands the ideals and also knows those that he could
quickly eliminate without advising with you to keep off the
detail work. I think it is well understood that you are the
leader."

if he could find steady employment in line with his training.
