3/07/44 EC's letter:
Mr. [
849]
Clearwater Beach, Florida
Dear [
849]:
I feel guilty in not writing you before now. Of course we
can figure out all sorts of excuses and yet there shouldn't
be any excuse for a fellow being so ungentlemanly as not to
send a "thank you note" to the one he thinks so much of.
Maybe it doesn't make any difference to those who love each
other. It is the others who think about those things.
I have been in a daze since I left Florida. Had a very good
visit in Deland. Came home feeling very good, but Mother
[wife, Gertrude] was sick and I took care of those around the
house, and finally she was up again.
During that time I guess I was just swelling up like an
idiot. I got madder and madder at each and everyone in the
office from Miss Gladys on down, or up, which ever way you
take it, and you know what that finally does. Eventually
went to New York to take some of Reilly's treatments. Reilly
wasn't there, but they took care of me just as nicely as if
he had been. Finally came home and of course called my
doctor here. Guess I'm doing very well, but what a mess I am
making out of one of the best opportunities I have had in my
life. Lets hope it will work out alright. Came near having
Bronchial Pneumonia, but have been free of fever for the last
two days.
I want you to thank Mr. [[
5048]'s husband] for me. Maybe I
will get to write him but there is so much to do here. Most
of us are idiots enough to feel we know how to do things
better than anyone else and when they do not do things as we
feel they should be done, then the "fat is in the fire."
How are [
1521] and [
1102]? Give them my love. I hope you
are really taking care of yourself and getting along good. I
believe short wave will help, providing you don't get it too
heavy and get more broken up than you are able to eliminate.
I believe you have a good doctor, in fact, both the masseuse
and the elctro-therapist I believe are good.
I am sending you one-half dozen of the booklets which you can
use whenever and wherever you see fit. Let me know when you
need more of them.
You will find Miss Goodall a very nice person to talk with,
except that she may ask you so many questions, you will
wonder whether or not you are on the witness stand again.
I saw [
257] and [
903] while I was in New York. Went with the
intent of not letting anyone know I was there, but Peggy
called. She probably has been to see you since she got back.
She had spoken to [
257] and [
257] had spoken to someone else
and I made them all mad. That's a fine thing, all my friends
in New York are mad at me.
The office is about in the same fix. Mother is up and very
well. I am hoping to be up within a few days.
Hope you and the Colonel are working things out properly.
Let us hear from you. Our love to you all.
