New York
Dear Edgar:
It has been sometime since I have written to you. The lapse
of time has certainly been filled with much activity, which
in itself is representative of an opportunity that we should
be thankful for.
Looking back to the day we met in Dayton, and to the plans
you and I formed then, (pipe dreams they seemed then, and
you surely had courage to stand by your plans), looking back
to what you and I started then, and how we have worked
together for our common end, in a general way, as the
reading said, we have done pretty well. Not that the whole
thing is or has been yourself and myself, but that you and I
had the courage to move against, seemingly surmountable
obstacles, with a faith really child like in character.
Possibly that is something of what the Master meant of being
child like to enter the kingdom. Anyway you and I together
have been and, in a way, still are the backbone of the work.
Still are in the sense that you and I know best the
demonstration we seek to make - to what end we seek to give
people physical readings and apply them in the hospital.
The Forces have been rebuking me severely of late, in that
our representation is presenting to people too much of the
money making purpose, - too much of how to live in physical
comfort, rather than in that happiness that comes of
understanding, which later enables one to secondarily
gratify the physical desires. I no doubt am to blame.
Heavens knows we have enough of that on our board. I am not
sure that [
165]'s chief interest is not in the newly formed
health room board, as a money making proposition. [
257] we
know leans always a little too much that way. Both are
sincere in their desire to do good. Both are good men. But
neither see that the idea of our work is to educate man to a
way of living that will make him less dependent or
gratification of his desires, (those things dear to the
human heart), and freeing from same, enable him to live in
the happiness of his own evolving potential abilities, and
of his application there of to realize or materialize his
own higher emotional self. It is to enable man to
understand his 4th dimensional viewpoint and its value and
purpose in life, even while in this 3 dimensional physical
form with the latters desires and limited purpose. Living
in the former man finds happiness, independent of the
physical, yet with such an attained understanding
may so apply himself as to secondarily obtain physical
comfort. Now this is the educational program you and I seek
to carry out and its success depends upon us, because we
together are about the only ones who thoroughly get the
concept. The others are sincere desire to do good - but you
and I together alone understand the kind of good we seek to
do - how to do it and what to do in order to accomplish it.
Now in a general way, I guess we haven't done so badly. Yet
in a specific way, we both being human and both wanting
material comforts for our families, may of late have slipped
a little in our attitude of mind and there in that presented
in our lives. In my visions I saw you taking readings, I
standing beside you and I saw [
302], who stands for
materialism - money - desire for physical comforts. I was
told then: "The work isn't first shoveling out money to the
hospital; it isn't just using the forces to make money -
even for others." It isn't that you and I have done
anything wrong - but the whole job in its entire bigness, -
in its educational phase - in its Christ like duplicate
representation is up to you and me. It is now, as in the
beginning - as when we first started in Dayton. We are the
nucleus, towards which center we must draw our fellow board
members. If I search my own mind and heart, I wonder if I
haven't been lecturing correctly, talking correctly, yet
deep in my mind given to much convetous attention to the
making of money - to affairs of business and the world, - to
comforts, rather than seeking in my life, that condition I
seek to represent and that I did represent in my days of
hardship - as also did you so nobly and so well. I wonder
if I haven't slipped away from, when bowing my head in
misfortune, I said: "Father, thy will, not mine be done.
Make me the channel for doing good and it shall be done," -
slipped away from that attitude towards that, (were it less
sincere and good), but less noble, less IDEALISTIC than that
of some of our fellow board members and association members?
Yes - I'm sure I have and the Forces have so told me - so
rebuked me - justifiably. Where are the wonderful
Philopsophical readings of former days? Now we have lands,
buildings, etc., etc. - why now that we have them do we not
get such a marvelous reading on Christ Life, or Religion, or
astrology, or cosmogony as was given when you lay your head
upon an old warn out couch, in a little barren dwelling in
Dayton? Not that the lands, houses ETC., are wrong, but
with their coming have I given them to much thought -
replaced them in importance for the others? I haven't meant
to - God knows I haven't - but in spite of myself have I
slipped a little? It must be so.
Looking at it from another angle, some mighty and powerful
intelligence seems to speak, at times, through [
137]. It is
so to the extent that I am often awed by it - his former
Brother is the One - often I think. Before he left for
Europe he said: "The reason [
195] is being delayed and
having such trouble getting his machine is that he, in his
deepest mind and heart is thinking of the money and power it
will bring, rather than of the demonstration in terms of
science, of the forces of life we are seeking to represent
and demonstrate. We can't seek to demonstrate gratification
of lower rather than higher forces, and expect help from the
higher forces of intelligence." "If," continued [
137],
"[
195] is beginning to feel the bigness of such a
demonstration and not of self that is making it and of that
which self will get from it - then he'll get it - and get it
soon."
Doesn't this sound like a gentle reminder from the throne
- appropriate to all of us? My father gave me a reminder,
not so gentle the other night. Doesn't this correlate with
what I wrote above about wonderful philosophical readings -
for who gives such knowledge but the higher forces!
Yes, I'll need all that's in me to stand strong against
similar materialistic or physical influences - for the spirit
is willing, but the flesh is weak. It is a lonesome path to
tread alone, even though a crown of glory lies at the end of
the path - yet you started to tread it with me in those early
Dayton days, & we'll have to hold each other from side
stepping - from slipping off - or that for which we two
stand, or the backbone, will weaken & slip also. I write
this letter, not with any idea of pulling you up, but rather
that I may hold on to you to pull myself up - & back upon
the straight & narrow. I have been told that I mentally
need to be so pulled & so strengthened, & if in so writing
you I sort of use you as a mental prof (in writing I obtain,
in a measure, that strength), or if it seems I am making you
the goat, then I ask your forgiveness - for as you
understand & I understand, it is for a worthy cause. It is
for all we hold really dear & lasting to our whole life, to
our soul, or the salvation thereof if you please, which is
more to be coveted than those things dear to the human
heart.
I have heard from & answered Hugh Lynn. I hope he shows
you my letter, for it borders on what I felt when I was Hugh
Lynn's age - & there is something much alike in us both.
Yet we all, (he also) have the same devil to fight & we may
only pray for that understanding that brings victory for
ourselves, over life & death. We are all on the golf
course of life - all in traps - & the gods watch to see if
we will make a good shot out, or sink deeper into the sand
part of materialism.
Am glad the folks had a nice trip. You must take a rest now
yourself & be sure & do it. I too, like a darn fool, neglect
my health - but there is no glory to that, & again not rely
ourselves, but our life's work is the sufferer.
Trust you are all well & happy & that everything is going
well at the hospital. Look forward to seeing you over the
week end. My best to all, and yourself,
Sincerely, [
