3/21/36 Miss [
954]'s letter: Concerning the blood supply...a
part of this touches on history, I gather, rather than actual
present condition as I shall explain a little farther on.
Also in the mention of a psychopathic as well as pathological
disturbance which was so important at one time that I firmly
believe it was the root of the breakdown of my marriage.
This was followed some years later by an operation which I
now chastise myself for not mentioning. I felt so very badly
when I wrote asking for help that I did not give a list of
all my ectomies...among them an appendectomy, a hysterectomy,
tonsillectomy, O well...add them up.
My wonderful chiropractor, Dr. Leonard, will appreciate
that his ten year stretch of helpfulness in the midst of
a situation in which he might have been arrested at any
time has meant something for here is registered: "Material
aid has been brought by the relaxing of centers..." "This
HAS aided and is a relief often to the system in these
directions." Necessities of activities...yep...that means
work.
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM: This all clicks wonderfully. It is so
long since I have dared the slightest excitement in the form
of entertainment...only my work excitement has been allowed.
The "long standing disturbance in the pelvis" [954-2,
Par. 13]...are not paramount with me at the moment...but
are a matter of history with possible future disturbances,
I have long thought. However, I do have pain in the area
now...but have full belief that proper build-up will hold
off worse things for a time.
I shall proceed with the Calcidin as suggested.
Please explain whether the radio-active machine I have is
the violet ray type mentioned on Page 3 [Par. 17]. If not
I shall have to investigate and get a doctor who has such
appliances, I suppose.
Page 3...bottom [Par. 18] although osteopathic is given, I
much prefer to continue with my Dr. Leonard, who has scarcely
seen me because of economic circumstances. I consider his
treatment equal to that of the osteopathic...having had much
experience of this kind. I should like an opinion as to
whether this seems feasible.
Page 4 [Par. 20--26]...this appears to be a merry little
diet...of eat, drink...and be merry... I suspect that I had
better give up a mere job and take care of this diet...as
long as the last salary check will do it. Gosh...what about
our poor malnourished children! However, I have in my
sweetly active physical history taken six or ten meals
before. It was however a nuisance. Eating is rather a
nuisance to me any way. Funny thing, I have not been able
to touch milk and egg for years...but I'll try it out.
As to that See? stuff after directions on meals...we see...
all right. But how is Mr. Hearst going to feel when he sees
us reeling in to knock off a bit of copy having had our glass
of red wine in the middle of the business day? It is our
opinion that Mr. Hearst is going to say..."If you can't keep
sober on the job, [
954]..." And we leave the rest to your
morbid imagination.
"These manners, we will find, will materially aid."
I cherish this line. Why wouldn't they? If people had as
good manners as this all the time...they would never be on
the edge of the precipice as I am.

Miss [
954]
New York City
My dear Miss [
954]:
Just a line about yours of the 21st and the reading. I'd
rather talk to you about it, and probably we will have that
chance very shortly.
As to the violet ray: This is a different machine entirely
from the Radio-Active Appliance, for you plug it into the
wall. You can get one for a few dollars at perhaps a Cut
Rate Drug Store, and give the treatments yourself at home
as indicated. Be sure you get the rod applicator when you
select the machine; I think two or three applicators come
with each machine; the glass applicators give off a violet
ray light when the machine is turned on, but the rod
applicator is what you need. You hold it in your hand,
and the next treatment put your foot on it - with a piece
of glass underneath, as indicated. The way the applications
are to be made probably gave you the idea that it was
referring to the Radio-Active Appliance; for you do
circulate about the body, opposite extremities, the same as
with the Radio-Active. Of course, with the rod applicator,
you are taking considerable amount of electricity, so don't
give the treatment too long at a time in the beginning, and
be sure to take off your watch or jewelry or anything of the
kind when taking a treatment.
Now, regarding Dr. Leonard: I see no reason why he cannot
give the treatments suggested, if he will adhere to the
outline. However, that's entirely up to you. Just from
meeting Dr. Leonard I feel sure that he is sincere and will
be glad to cooperate in any way possible towards seeing you
get the results.
So far as the diet is concerned, and the eating every few
minutes: I suspect that the effect produced by the use of
the electricity, the Calcidin and the treatments, will be to
produce in your system the desire or the need for such foods;
perhaps it will be hard in the beginning, but gradually your
appetite should call for these periodical bites, as it were.
As for the red wine, maybe you'll have to defer that until
AFTER office hours - just so it is an hour or hour and a half
before dinner. You'll just have to wait a bit later to eat
your dinner. See enclosed Health Hint regarding the value
of red wine and brown or black bread.
I'm sure you will be interested to know that Dr. Lucien
Warner is here, representing Duke and Columbia, 'listening
in' and making his reports. He's quite an interesting man,
and I hope his connection with the Work will be a helpful
experience to everyone concerned.
Hoping to see you sometime next month, and with love from
all, I am
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC:GD]
5/05/36 [
954]'s letter to EC:
Most dear Teacher:
I hope you have reached home safely and find all well there.
My sense of loss was so great as all of you left that I found
myself indulging in sentimental tears. I suppose it seems
odd to you, but I feel so perfectly at home with you and
with your group. It is as if when I see you all I am
suddenly talking SENSE. It is as if I am constantly
surrounded by chattering magpies and then suddenly I hear
people talking sense. Naturally enough I cannot always
answer this new sense that I hear, for I am a child who has
been taught in a foreign land. I do not belong as Gladys
belongs, for instance, and am totally unable to give forth
the kind of quality she gives with such apparent ease.
Nor is this a search for personal comradeship. I have
stopped trying to find that and really no longer am on the
search for it...and believe me my search was very great for
a very long period and knew no extremity that could stop it.
Only age now I find...helps somewhat.
After you had gone I made new efforts to get at my appointed
work, thinking my new 123 pounds ought to help. But so far
I have not accomplished what I wished. I come closer and
closer to the acknowledgement that the fault is in my will
...and I begin to believe that my will to fail is so deep
that it turns upon my body in periods of stress and says
"now you will be sick...you will do my will because you will
be too weak to do yours..." So back comes the old strep and
soon...this time very active in the throat.
HOWEVER...
This was not to be a diatribe about myself. I hope you
felt the New York trip worthwhile. Hugh Lynn and I talked
at some length about it...wondering whether seeing all the
people was really the thing. You must get at the point
where the childish questions about the phenomena and the
work bore you to distraction. Certainly more and more you
need to reach key people. How much one feels that Mr. Dale
Parker is one of these...and that is quite apart from his
worldly possessions, although I see that worldly possessions
and position help one to be of more help. I did not use to
believe that at all, you see. Perhaps because I have seen
worldly things so badly misused. [Page 2 of this letter was
used in
1165-1 Background - also noted in
1087-1 Reports.]
P.S. I enclose a check for $12.50, which although it is
entirely inadequate, I ask you to accept with the hope that
future health and increased will power on my part may make me
better able to repay you... O maybe when you're an old man
and need a silver headed cane!
5/22/36 William L. Leonard's letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce
Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Your note came to me this morning. I appreciate very much
that you sometimes have me in mind. I especially noted the
phrase, "I hope I did you no harm."
My dear sir, I came away from you that morning feeling that
I had been privileged to commune with "One of Nature's
Gentlemen" who loves and understands and sympathizes with
suffering humans.
Add to that that I firmly believe you are sincerely doing all
you can to help your fellow man and - what greater compliment
can I pay any man than call him "Nature's Gentleman"?
Miss [
954] was in my office yesterday afternoon - she was
unusually tired both mentally and physically. She went away
feeling much better. She is working too hard, yet she is
keeping her increase of weight, for which I'm thankful.
She knows that I understand her and her difficulties
sympathetically so I'm able to give her mental uplift,
TEMPORARILY.
After my visit with you I told her that I had an acquaintance
who had a violet ray machine that was being used for the time
being by a party out of the city and that as soon as it is
returned he would be glad to let me have it for her. She
was pleased. She asked me about it yesterday.
Is that machine at her disposal now? She is very anxious
to carry out the instructions contained in her Reading as
exactly as possible. I'm anxious too, and am lending my
efforts and influence to that effect.
All in all she is getting better. That gall bladder drainage
did her good.
Wishing you well, I remain yours,
Wm. L. Leonard
