9/29/64 GD's note: According to verbal reports to me by
[
984]'s parents, Mr. [
462] and Mrs. [
404], he quit before
finishing high school and went to work on a freight boat.
He became a draftee in the Army and chose to stay in the
Army rather than to seek a commission in the Navy [See
984-4
on
8/03/41].
He took officers training and became Lt. [
984] working in
Motor Maintenance, and went overseas. He came out of the
Army as a Captain and had the choice of staying in the
service, but he didn't want any more of the Army.
On getting out of the Army he worked on deck of pilot
boats, then he worked with the engineer and later became the
engineer and was active for several years with the Maryland
Port Authority. He became the Port Engineer who had charge
of all the pilot boats, seeing that they were equipped, etc.
All this time there was a pulling between the land and the
sea; it was hard for him to decide which to choose.
Through his connections with the Pilot Association he
made connections with Allis-Chalmers International [machinery
for overseas, Diesel engines, etc., etc.] and worked out of
Chicago.
He got into the selling end and has made several steps upward
with the company. Just as his reading indicated, he is a
natural leader - this has shown up in everything he has done.
He has been very successful and is happy in his work;
is married and has three children, a boy and two girls.
