3/21/71 National Enquirer article: CLAIM HEART DISEASE CAN
BE REDUCED BY ADDING LITHIUM TO DRINKING WATER
Heart disease could be reduced if large amounts of the metal
lithium were added to city water supplies, claims a public
health expert. Lithium-enrichment of drinking water has no
harmful side effects, said Dr. A. W. Voors, assistant
professor of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at
the University of North Carolina.
Dr. Voors studied the mineral contents of water as it came
out of the tap in 99 cities and concluded that a low lithium
content is connected statistically with a high rate of
atherosclerotic heart disease - a hardening of the arteries
due to fatty deposits.
Lithium deficiencies have also been linked with diabetes and
hypertension, according to past scientific studies, Dr. Voors
said.
