1/15/36 Husband's letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce,
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Sir:
I am addressing you having secured your address from
Dr. W. J. Sweasey Powers of New York to whom I wrote at
the suggestion of Dr. Eugene Underhill, Jr., 2219 Chestnut
Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Underhill has had under his
care for sometime both my wife and myself, although it is
primarily about her that I desire to communicate with you.
In June 1927 Mrs. [
1118] was stricken with a sudden
contraction of the nasal membranes. This came with
absolutely no warning, and gasping for breath she was
taken to a physician who prescribed a shrinking agent,
which upon application failed to bring relief. A nose
and throat specialist was then consulted and diagnosed
the case as a sinus infection. This condition was treated
locally for almost a year but continued to become worse.
Various elimination tests were made, none of which produced
anything constructive. An operation was performed in May
1928 following which the condition became worse.
Until January 1930 the time was spent searching for relief
when at last another specialist undertook a general
constitutional rebuilding program together with extraction
of the teeth, Violet Ray treatments, etc. The condition
entirely disappeared and for eighteen months she enjoyed
perfect health, but none of the physicians were able to
definitely state reason for recovery. Again without warning
the condition reappeared in the fall of 1931 and but little
or no progress has been made since that time. Under
Dr. Underhill's treatment her general health has improved
but the same cannot be said for the nasal condition.
Constant accumulation of mucous persists in the head
chambers, membranes swell until nose is entirely closed
and she is almost insane with suffering, and both her and
myself are naturally in a highly nervous and worn out state.
Such things as adrenalin, ephedrine, etc., usually used by
the medical profession in such cases all further enlarge the
membranes.
Dr. Underhill is unusual in that he recognizes to a great
extent the power of Mind, especially as possessed by rare
individuals, and knowing that both my wife and I feel the
same way although our knowledge of such science must be
classed as nothing, felt you might be of assistance to us.
He has recited to us some of the marvelous cures for which
you have been responsible, and we are hoping and praying
that it may be possible for you to employ the power which you
possess to assist us in bringing relief or cure for my wife.
Your consideration of her case as outlined in this letter
will be appreciated and I sincerely hope to hear from you at
your convenience as to whether you feel you can help us and
what your charge would be, so that we can determine whether
we can financially afford your help.
In closing I do not wish to appear panicky but nine and a
half years of torture is a long, long time and I implore
you to assist us if it is at all possible.
Very truly yours, [...]
REPORTS
2/19/36 Husband's letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce,
Association for Research
and Enlightenment, Inc.
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Information gotten at the reading for Mrs. [
1118] has been
received and is most interesting. We thank you so much for
this and plan to begin treatments within a few days although
she has had the misfortune to contract the grippe recently
and this of course has set her back considerably.
Upon attempting to have the nasal spray prepared for her I
am advised by chemists that Icthyol as it is placed in the
hands of druggists today is an Ammoniated product. Therefore
they all seem to wonder if this material would be
satisfactory if dissolved and about 5% alcohol added to the
solution to prevent decomposition. If you can help us with
this it would be appreciated. I don't suppose any
information was secured at the reading concerning the use of
the shrinking agent now employed to enable her to breathe.
I will gladly keep you informed of her progress and if any
additional help is needed call on you from time to time.
Very truly yours, [...]
2/24/36 EC's ltr. to [
1118]'s husband:
Dear Mr. [...]:
Replying to yours of 19th, I do not know about the Icthyol
but am sure your Physician can tell you, how to prepare and
the strength to make same, but feel sure if this is
Ammoniated, that it would be just the thing, it should from
the suggestion, with the Adjustments clear the cause of the
condition, hope you can get started on the treatments soon.
Know we will be glad to hear from you, and to try and be of
a service at any time.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
3/08/36 Husband's letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I am very much pleased to be able to write that the
osteopathic treatments seem to be helping Mrs. [
1118]. There
is one thing however on which we have reached an absolute
stale-mate, that being the Icthyol and Ammonia solution for
spraying the nose. None of the chemists or druggists whom
we approached seemed to know of exactly such a combination
of vapors but Boericke and Tafel one of the leading houses
in Philadelphia agreed to follow directions in preparing
experimental lots for us, not knowing in what strength it
should be made. They started by using one ounce of Icthyol
and one ounce of 28% Ammonia, distilling these separately
and diluting the vapors in a 10% solution of alcohol and
distilled water.
Reviewing again briefly Mrs. [
1118]'s case, her nasal
membranes from the beginning of her trouble years ago, have
been so sensitive that none of the ordinarily used shrinking
agents could be employed. They all set up irritation and
soreness and the reaction was always enlargement rather than
shrinking. Therefore in order to keep the nose partly open
to enable her to breathe and also for drainage, all of the
physicians although deploring the necessity have always
agreed that the only thing she could use was a 2% Cocaine
solution. Although this we might say has kept her above the
psychology of it is bad for she constantly dreads the thought
of having to use this drug.
Therefore, after the first lot of Icthyol and Ammonia was
prepared Dr. Underhill and I agreed that before permitting
her to use it I had better work with it in my own nose until
I thought it was mild enough for her. This for two reasons,
first she looks forward to it displacing the cocaine solution
and if it did not shrink the membranes she would undoubtedly
suffer a mental setback from this disappointment, and
secondly, if it was too strong and brought on soreness
like other things which have been tried the reaction would
be about the same.
The first lot made was so strong that it was impossible for
me to stand it in my nose even after I had further diluted
the solution one part to seven parts of distilled water. We
then had another lot prepared using 1-3/4 oz. Icthyol and 1/4
oz. Ammonia and the result was no better, in fact its effect
on my nose was exceedingly painful. We are now at a loss to
know what to do and fear to let her try it.
We feel that possibly another reading might bring forth
definite directions for us and I am therefore enclosing check
for $10.00 to cover cost of this. The information we seek is
in what proportions the Icthyol and Ammonia should be made
and whether this alone will shrink the nasal membranes or if
it should be used in conjunction with the Cocaine Solution.
I hope and pray you may be able to secure this information
for us so that we can proceed with the complete treatment
for her.
