"My husband Dick and I are owners and constant wearers of
matched fire opal pendants about our necks.
"Only recently we were blessed to meet the owners of the
'Opal Queen' fire-opal mine here in Virgin Valley in Nevada.
We were asked to please come see their huge collection of
precious gems which they do not display to the public, as it
is their own private collection.
"From 3 P.M. until after 9 P.M. I handled hundreds of uncut
and cut gems worth a countless amount of money. When I tell
you it was like glimpsing God - that is my closest analogy I
can possibly use to describe their beauty. But after viewing
and handling them several hours (I was still holding one in
my fingers), I suddenly was seized with a burning sensation
in my solar plexus region. I became slightly nauseated -
burning up - then chilled - and next completely weak and near
fainting. Being a nurse, I excused myself quickly and
'headed' to the outside for fresh air. I sat on the steps
and lowered my head between my knees - thus shortly being out
of the seemingly fainting spell. (I've never fainted in my
life - and am not given to any illnesses, thank God.)
Shortly I returned to the opals, - and the minute I began
handling them once again, the same thing occurred almost
immediately. At that point, my husband and I went home. But
before we did, the owner of the mine, Ed Mitchell, told me he
can not view or handle precious opals for any period of time
without the EXACT same thing happening to him. Said he never
knew why - only that it happens.
"Now, can you shed any light on maybe WHY this takes place
with opals (fire opals)? No other gems seem to affect us.
"Oh yes, I might add - today - (and last night) it was like a
fire was going up my spine as well as in my solar plexus
region - just a plain burning sensation. It's still very
vivid today.
"My husband, since we're A.R.E. members, suggested writing
you, describing the experience and seeing if there's anything
in the files similar to mine and Mr. Mitchell's.
"Anything you might be able to tell us we'd greatly
appreciate."

"The only information that is published on opals is to be
found on page 33 of the book 22 Gems, Stones and Metals [from
the Edgar Cayce readings], a copy of which I've enclosed.
According to those extracts in the one instance [
4006-1] the
opal was a control for anger and in the other [1193-1] as a
means of purification.
"There doesn't seem to be anything in the readings to support
your reaction to opals but I am passing your letter on to
Gladys Davis Turner for possible inclusion with one of the
readings that makes reference to opals. What your experience
does indicate is that gem stones do have an effect upon the
body. Perhaps this is the significance of your having
handled these stones."
