Monday
Dear...dear Teacher:
Your letter came to me this morning just when I needed it.
Yes...I was with you...all the time you were here. I do not
need to see you to be with you...although seeing you is good
for the heart.
This is a dark hour. But I am resigned and shall not be too
hurt if [
1210] cannot be here.
The moral attitude did not change and so he got much worse
after you left. Because I refused to get out the paper
because he had repudiated all the principles for which he
had stood (and incidentally had ordered me out of his room
and out of his affairs)...he sent for me to call on him
Friday afternoon.
I went. I told him just what he had done...and that I would
not raise my hand until he resumed his principles in an open
statement to both his son [
1637] and his physician. He did
not do it.
But you know it is hard for me to be hard. I wired him...
and sent him notes...and spoke with his nurse. So each day
(getting progressively worse) he has sent a message to me.
This morning at 8:30 the nurse called and in hurried tones
said that Doctor [
1210] wanted me to know there was no
improvement in his condition. I told her I knew that.
(I've carried this whole thing in the form of reflected
symptoms...been a terrific experience). Then she was
evidently called suddenly. She said, "I cannot talk more."
At about 10:30 I felt relieved enough to make a break out of
my house...and Mother acquiesced with my decision. [...]
[[
1210]'s deceased son] or [...] [[
1210]'s deceased daughter]
had tapped to me on the mirror of the bathroom while I was
brushing my teeth. I got a hunch to call a psychiatrist
friend...and came to [
1210]'s apartment to get some
collaborating evidence for my idea...the children's pictures
...hoping to call him back through them...you know.
The phone rang and it was some key people...friends of the
Doctor's.
Got the psychiatrist's secretary...but he was leaving town...
and could not see me.
Got a hunch to telephone Mother...and she said Mrs. [...]
[[
1637]'s wife] was trying to get me from the hospital.
And as calmly as if you were telling somebody that dinner
was served [...] [[
1637]'s wife] told me they had operated
and that he was getting along all right and that was about
all there was to it.
I hung up the phone.
I don't find myself overdisturbed. Mother said yesterday...
"The next thing will be the knife..."
So there he is...sold down the river...because he refused
to hold fast to THAT he expressed belief in.
I think he will get well. Just who will be inhabiting his
body when he gets well I cannot know. When I talked with
the psychiatrist's secretary and explained that it was a
case of "shock" she was most understanding about the change
in personality.
It is my personal conviction that the gallstones have been
formed since he went into the hospital. No one knows what
he has suffered spiritually for giving himself over to such
powers of darkness. I feel for him a lot. I know that God
in His mercy will care for him when I can no longer care.
I shall try to hold this letter for some later word...and
mail it this evening...
Thank you for living...and for all you have brought to me
and my empty...searching heart... [
954]
P.S. 7:30 P.M. [...] [[
1657]'s wife] has just called here
(an entire silence had existed for ten days you understand
before this so called crisis)...to say that the Doctor's
pulse is normal and his breathing is regular or some such
fact.
If one can look at this disinterestedly there is here a
possible most intriguing experiment in reincarnations.
Recall that in his reading [
1210-1 or
1210-2 or 1210-3?]
it said that he would have some more incarnations to go
through. I have a kind of feeling that he is being rid
of one. I only hope it is the one I call the Chinaman...
for the Chinaman appeared during the first winter in which
I knew the Doctor...and was at times dominant in the
personality.
His life reading, you recall, did not mention a Chinaman
at all...and he could never quite understand why it did
not. Well to be rid of this cruel and licentious Chinaman
would be a great help I am sure...even if you have to get
rid of a gall bladder to do it.
When the reading was taken at the beach...he was at a
point of deep humiliation when his best selves were able
to express. Later, changes came...and the ego ran rampant.
We can only pray for him. He has suffered many humiliations
in this sickness. Mistaken kindness is getting up a
"collection" to help [
1637] defray hospital bills...and
[
1522] in her effort to possess him whether for his good
or not has made secret arrangements to move him out of the
state for recuperation. It is all more like a book than a
life...and perhaps we can turn it into something of that
order.
I am trying not to be bitter. I am past too great a hurt.

Dear Miss [
954]-
Thank you for yours of the 1st. Do hope the Dr. is
continuing on the improve. Honestly, feel this might have
been avoided but, possibly what ever is, is best. Just
hope the very best comes to each as are involved in turmoils
of the hour - for know it is a turmoil for each one. Yet,
out of it all may come PEACE and a glory none have known
before, and may it be just that. Am having a particularly
bad time just at present. But thanks to the Love as is
shown in HIM have been warned and hence partially fore-armed.
Can I but remain steady? Please remember me in your prayers
just now.
Good silent group meeting yesterday. Florence - Miss Edmonds
offered a special prayer for the Dr. There were wonderful
vibrations all round us.
Think there is often appearances left out. That may be even
all too apparent - and as it said of my own, not mentioned
because of the attitude at the moment; either one would give
up entirely and say "Oh, what is the use?" or become so
boastful (as so many of us are inclined to do) that we would
be beyond living with.
Let's hope and pray every thing works out fine - still
would like to have him here if he would care to come - would
arrange some way for him if he likes.
Remember us to him when you can. Thanks for the line to
Gertrude all are fair here but me. All send love

My dear Teacher:
I am sorry indeed to learn that you are not feeling well.
I suspected something. I want you to make every conscious
effort to realize that you may be caught in this turmoil...
and to pull yourself up above it into those sweet regions
where all is harmony and all is peace. I am working on this
myself...and although I appear violent at times in reality
I am considerably withdrawn.
As I have seen this mind at work in this crisis I have
actually reconciled myself to what is happening. I see that
it is the tearing down in order that all my be rebuilt...that
he may recall in WHOM and in WHAT he dares to believe...and
to back up his faith by action.
I can even truly see that although I would have saved him
this suffering through the reading...the stubborn Doctor
in charge has worked for God's LARGER plan. God is at work
winning a soul. I only wanted in the beginning to win a
body free of pain and a mind free of distraction. But I
see that the soul must find its way alone... I can only
in my best moments wait and pray. Even with the loss of
contact which occurred at the time of the break, I am still
able to project myself considerably. Have taken quite a
number of flights with him. It has all been a remarkable
experience. Now, however, I am not able to take any of the
pain. At times I have taken it on command...and have reason
to think that I was able to relieve him in this way last
night. The first few days I carried much of the pain...
checking absolutely with him on nausea attacks. I feel...
in my odd way...that this relieved him...sort of carried him
through.
Please thank Florence for the beautiful prayer. I still know
that is the only true help. So many are trying to reach him
to help. Through a friend we had word from two Doctors who
work on the astral plane...and from the great Oriental...who
has been identified as one Lord Kumi. This great figure came
through in the seance...holding forth his hand and indicating
that in it he held the essence of the Doctor's life. His
message was in effect..."We have brought our gifts...Will
you reach up your hand and take them, my Son?"
[...] [[
1210]'s deceased daughter]'s love still finds its way
with many messages to me. Just imagine this: The little
grandson who is her son has never visited the Grandfather.
The tangled strains of [
1210]'s personalities just divided
him up here and there on occasions. But yesterday I had a
beautiful letter from the Grandmother who cares for him.
She is planning to bring him here on Sunday!
It is my hope that this child may be the turning point...
the spiritual jolt...to start him toward taking hold of
himself and so recovering.
Now I send this special...and I want you to hold this
thought. Consciously seek the true harmony which you have
known so well. Know that what comes MUST. I am lovingly
reconciled. Perhaps you are...but always watch for the
thing you call "sickness" when you know those you love are
in turmoil. You are extremely sensitive. Guard it with
that good armor which your friend came to show you in the
garden. That ARMOR cannot fail you and will carry you
through whatever is hard to the valiant victory for Him.
I still know that He will win this soul...how soon I cannot
say...but as he stands at the door ever knocking...so
eventually He will come in.
Testament message Thursday May 4..."And that because of false
brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out
liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring
us into bondage..."
But in HIM still lies the freedom if we will but claim it...
P.S. As to future plans for him...How good is your loving
thought to care for him. Naturally I have the same.
I would think it most sensible to have him home as soon
as he can be gotten out of his mental web and his present
physical depths. Once the turn has been taken and real help
is asked BY HIM we can get full directions and be FREE to use
them...at home. I can even have a nurse in of the practical
variety if I have to.
Then I have a fine old Irish nurse friend who runs a most
informal type of rest home in a beautiful spot in the country
only forty miles from here. She would be reasonable and I
could go for a week...leaving him longer if need be.
By that time he will be able to decide. I think the Beach
would be wonderful...but more because of your presence there
than anything else. As you know food offers quite a problem
in most of the Virginia homes that we have struck down there.
He will need only the simplest...the most carefully prepared.
I could not consider having him in your house...for I feel
deeply that both of you and Mrs. Cayce need whatever privacy
you can get out of your busy lives. This will all work out.
All must depend on the change in heart. It is not even
too far fetched for me to imagine going with him and taking
one of those little modern apartments where I could prepare
food. But we must await developments...and pray His
guidance...
5/08/39 EC's ltr. to Miss [
954]:
Dear Miss [
954]-
Thanks for yours of the 6th. Am persuaded had I not had a
blessed assurance recently, all the trials of recent weeks
would have more than I could bear. But with it - hope
remains, that yet - yet all will be well. Do hope the Dr.
continues on the improve, and soon he will be adjusting
himself to the new ideas that am sure will be a part of his
experience but that such will draw him closer, even yet
closer to the Truth as is in HIM.
Yes - "He works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform"
in our short-sightedness, we are trouble oft. But He doeth
all things well. Sometimes do we not become hard heartened,
we see as eye to eye with HIM.
The kingdom is within - and only there may become aware of
the real motivative influence. And I wonder if we do not
at time misplace the credit, then.
Florence is wonderful and am sure the prayers of the
Righteous shall save many - for do believe in forgiveness
and intercession.
The messages to you am sure are just the strength that you
need and HE never fails to send that one who may help us the
more.
Hope the visit from the Grandchild brought the results that
you felt should be from the visit. All praise to Him - the
Giver of all good and perfect gifts. Please know can we in
any way help in the recuperation. Don't hesitate to call on
us - would be nice to have him here if practical and for his
best interest. Please remember us all to him and let us hear
when ever it is possible or convenient.
All send love and regards

Monday Morning,
My dear dear Teacher:
It is now just a week since the operation was performed.
Doctor has been entirely isolated. His grandson came here
Saturday at my connivance with the lady who cares for the
little fellow...travelled five hours by train. Yet he was
not allowed to see his Grandfather.
I am writing to you at this time because I feel a break
coming. I just got a secret message slipped to me that he
sends me "his regards and wants me to know he is easier of
the pain." This conflicts with other reports being given by
the hospital staff it self.
So you see I can sense great forces at work. I want you to
know that I feel comforted. I want you to feel comforted
also. God is not mocked. All will yet be well. If the
body can stand this racking...great good will come of this
terrible bondage.
I am praying for you...that you be given the strength in Him
...to hold fast to the beautiful life that is in you. You
have been a beacon to me...and others...but so especially to
me. You will yet be blessed with that radiance which He
confers on those who serve Him well. For you have done His
work. It is all that He requires. Someday I hope someone
will say to me "You, too, fought a good fight...and prepared
yourself for a better one..."
Dear love to you and all around you... [
954]
P.S. Recall again my vision of a year ago which I connected
with you...The beautiful white bull with the wreath of
flowers around his neck...Vitality...beauty...life...be
promised...
P.P.S. The E F C of that vision is evidently Florence
Evylinn Campbell. She has come into a key position in the
strange intrigue through which we are passing!!

Dear Miss [
954]-
Thanks for yours of the 8th. Wonders are the ways of a
Divine providence. Just hope every thing is working well.
Funny, isn't it that F.E.C. should be brought in at this
time - or is it??
Too bad seems about the Grandchild - possibly they knew best
- we can not see it now - maybe we will understand.
Hold to that comfort - that Peace. Know that it comes in
Love - not possession free Love. All will be well - hold
tight.
Thank you for all the help, strength, joy you have brought
into my experience.
All here are praying for you and that every thing work out
as God would have it.
All send love and regards

My dear, dear Teacher:
My very dear friend, Mabel Brown, is on her way to Virginia
Beach and will see you early Saturday.
She is bringing you my dear love. As I am writing this,
[
1058] is looking over my shoulder and she sends you
greetings.
Both of us are thinking of you a great deal just now...and we
want you to know that we believe and shall always believe in
the LIGHT you have brought to us.
Yours ever, [

... St.,
New York, N.Y.
My dear, dear Teacher:
He has gone...as I am sure you know. Yet I did not have
the heart to telegraph or write you...and here is my precious
friend, Mabel Brown, to bring you these words from my hand.
(Strange delay so send by mail)
My first peace came at ten o'clock this morning when I tried
to contact you to tell you. I sensed you near me...and I
especially prayed that you would have strong guides to light
the way this day for you. I think I know YOUR heart. Just
do not let it be too hurt for me. Know that I am striving...
most especially am I striving to forgive him the weakness
which was that of a little child afraid of the dark of
life...eager for the light of death.
During the night I battled with him...and with [...] [his
deceased daughter] who took him over. For it was a weak
thing to go...it would have been a strong thing to stay.
But this morning...now since ten o'clock I feel more and
more deeply reconciled. O what I would have done to hold
him...there was no extremity of action or humiliation that
I would not have taken. But he would not.
So much that is beautiful remains. For every picture must be
made of light and dark...He had so much of both. And I KNOW
that some place...sometime...in that ages he will surely find
that quality of courage and those other things he lacked. To
me even his lacks were so dear...and I wanted to supply them.
I tried too hard...I was self righteous and harsh. But he
knew that it came out of love...he knew it was something he
could not grasp...but that it was love.
And now out of your richness of heart will you consider
doing something for him...something I cannot do. At two
o'clock on Sunday here there is to be a cold...matter of
fact service...which [
1637] tells me "will be as short as
the law allows."
Would YOUR group...or maybe just you and a few near friends
come together for him then...or soon thereafter. And will
you yourself speak to him...as if he were present...as he
would surely be...and tell him of how we treasured him and
how we yearn for his advancement and his new and more hopeful
life.
And speak to him of Jesus. For at the end he talked of Jesus
...and the nurse tells me that in the hospital he wanted
someone to read the Bible to him. Will you supply that lack
...that which was denied him? Many verses have come to me
in meditation lately...and these especially: St. Matthew
16:24 through 26. St. Luke 4:10 and 11 and that which I
clung to and wanted so much to read to him myself concerned
the story of the healing of the Centurion's servant as in
St. Luke Chapter 7...the healing of Jairus' daughter...
St. Luke 8:42 and 49 through 55.
It is late for the healing reading.
But it is not late for the singing of that beautiful...
beautiful promise which he was quoting to me the night
before he went into the hospital...Jesus...Lover of MY Soul
...That he called in his agony. And if it can be sung for
him then I know he will surely hear and be comforted.
All is well...and follow the bent of your heart.
You will know what best to do for him now.
I shall manage...and do you likewise manage in Him...for of
His own have we given Him. [
954]
5/13/39 Miss [

Saturday Morning
By now Mabel has seen you. I had a strange experience
expecting to send the enclosed letter to you. I expected
to see her off on the boat...and I was delayed to such an
extent...even getting lost on the waterfront...a strange
experience to me. So I felt that God meant it was better
that Mabel talk to you in that sweet, sweet way of her own
...rather than that I dictate to her.
Now dear Teacher...one very, very important thing more.
Yesterday afternoon I was in the Doctor's apartment putting
up flowers and preparing [...] [deceased daughter]'s ashes
for placement in the crypt which he had requested of [
1637].
I was lead to the big old [[
1210]'s mother]'s family Bible
which he had been dipping into of late. I thought to
receive some message of comfort and opened it...as I always
open the Book...with my eyes closed.
I started to read on the right side of the Book..."Plead my
cause, O Lord, with them that strive with me; fight against
them that fight against me..." and I sickened to see how
cruel the Old Testament is in spots. Down further I marked
"Lord, how long wilt thou look on? rescue my soul from their
destructions, my darling from the lions..." And I thought
that last week it would have been appropriate.
Thenover on the left page I saw a pencil mark...new and
fresh. [
1210] had marked it, presumably before he left
for the hospital, for the same pencil lay beside the book.
(Unless [
1637] might possibly have marked it during that
night watch...yet I think NOT)...and it read
"BLESSED IS HE WHOSE TRANSGRESSION IS FORGIVEN, WHOSE SIN
IS COVERED."
And this his cry...surely I'll be given strength for THAT.
My only sorrow is that I miss him so...And I rebuked him for
daring to leave so soon. You forgive me...
5/15/39 EC's ltr. to Miss [
954]:
Dear Miss [
954]-
Your friend Miss Brown was in to see me Saturday morning
- gave me the news. I should have known it from an
experience that you will, am sure, be interested in.
Tho I did at the time, feel that he had passed - felt
rather he had risen above heart, aches and worry. But
the experience Friday after noon when went to take the
reading; whether before or after do not know. But either
in going in or coming out had the feeling of seeing a great
number of Balls - or balloons rise to where ever I was.
And among them was the Dr. - for in each ball was an entity.
He seemed happy and anxious to be busy with some one that was
with him in a lesser ball or sphere. I, of course, should
have been able to know what that was, but did not until
Miss Brown told me.
That HIS peace is with you is what really matters. There
can never be much distress for those gone on. We poor, weak
ones here that need a new lesson in Patience, fortitude, LOVE
are the ones that are so anxious. Just so we do not become
hard, resentful - for "Tho He slay me - yet will I love Him
the More" must be our attitude. Know am praying for and with
you every moment of the time. "His Will be done." Just you
know all is well - God's Love, God's Mercy is sufficient for
every thing - Will we, but rest in Him. And I know he has
entered into that rest - by service already begun. Don't let
any thing or body tell you differently.
Already your wish has been done - and ALL IS WELL. Am sure
there will be times when may be able to speak. Possibly
understand now why have been slipping in and out so easily
of late. May be of help. Trust will and by HIS Grace and
Mercy and resting on His promises to each of us will do my
best. Just you keep sweet as you are, Miss [
954]. Leave
him with Jesus - his strength is sufficient. Fret not
thyself of what might have been. God is LOVE - and is able
in same to keep all who seek - and he seeks and has entered
in. Miss Brown gave me a full message - tho much of same I
knew - tho could not did not of course mention to her my
experience - such are too sacred to me - but for those whom
it may help and not satisfy some curious mind. She was in
S.S. Class yesterday - may see her again to day.
Your experience with the Book is interesting. Yes some words
of the Prophets were hard - hard men - but men. It is in
Jesus we find Love thy enemies. Do good to them that hate
you - and behold I stand at the door and knock it is in HIM
all becomes LOVE - as the New Commandment I give unto YOU
that Ye Love one another. Live - Love - God to us poor souls
is a growth - and we enter in.
Hold fast - to HIS PROMISES - in them are strength - in them
are PEACE yes LOVE even as He asked that we show one to and
other - for as you do it unto the least - ye do it unto ME.
And that is you and I. May His love keep you. Work work
that is the cure for all ills - of the heart and mind - in
Our Souls we Know he is safe with Jesus.
My love to you and from each one here.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

Dear Hugh Lynn:
I had ben anxiously awaiting word from you...and your letter
has meant much to me. You know better than almost anyone
(I would except [
1058]) just what this terrible death means
to me.
I had a lovely experience today. I have not reacted
"normally" at all...for the death was entirely unnecessary
and so I have had to assume a peace very quickly to assure
my reason remaining to me. I went to take care of some
business this morning...Doctor having been in a torment
of signalling and trying to reach me. When I got home at
luncheon the signalling had stopped (as I asked him to stop
and be reassured and to rest in my love even if no one else
understood.) I had even that to do...now.
Your letter was in the box. Yesterday had brought great
comfort from your Father. Today was yours. Following
luncheon I went to my room and lay down...and fell into the
deepest and most restful sleep you could imagine. This is
absolutely unique. Because of the close connection which he
and I experienced even in the terrible mishandling of the
illness...even beyond my big fight for something else for
him... I NOW know that he is resting. Please tell your
Father. This is a great, great comfort.
My life cannot be entirely without remorse. There must have
been some other way if I had been more clever, more self
controlled, more something. O, the horror of being so weak
and so human that I could not control myself in the presence
of his agony! But that is past.
I will let you know, of course, what I intend to do. [
1058]
and Mother have been wonderful. It is my feeling that he
will not sleep for long. Then we shall know more. God bless
him. I am so grateful for these three years (three at the
end of June you know.)
Dear love to you...and to Mother and Gladys and your Father.
I could only wish this much for you or any younger friend.
[

1210] in [

5/12/50 GD's note: We were told that Dr. [
1210]'s wife
(from whom he was separated shortly after we first knew
him in 1936) was now married to a very wealthy man.
