1/20/38 GD's letter to Dr. Dobbins:
Dear Dr. Dobbins:-
Not having gotten a report on the three cases you sponsored
from Columbia - I mean a satisfactory report - I don't know
how you feel about the other two Readings to be Sponsored
by you according to your Pledge. It may be that you do not
wish to continue them. If so, it will be alright. However,
I'd like to explain what happened on the Columbia cases -
I don't think Hugh Lynn has written you. The professors
(psychologists) who were making the "experiments" took
the Readings to an MD and naturally he said it was all the
"bunk," and they let it go at that. At least this is as
much as we can gather, for they haven't given us a written
report - just said the experiments weren't satisfactory,
though they told Hugh Lynn that the MD said the Readings
didn't fit. So, we don't know whether they really didn't
fit, or whether the MD just couldn't see it. Of course, as
you remember, Osteopathy was recommended in two of the cases
- and they didn't do a thing about following out the
instructions, evidently. We must, on these Sponsored
Readings, get more cooperation from the doctors or those who
will agree to carry out the information; I mean we should
have done that on the Columbia cases - gotten them to agree
to it beforehand. Because, as we know, there isn't one
doctor in a thousand that will say a Reading is correct when
he sees it for the first time - especially when some other
school of treatment is recommended than his.
Now I'm enclosing a copy of a Reading we had today for a very
destitute family in Norfolk. The father has been out of a
job (See
1519-1) for several years, first because of a long
illness - which he has been able to overcome by following the
Readings, with the help of a sympathetic Naturopathic doctor
in Norfolk. The mother has been working for the City and has
made just barely enough to feed the three of them. This
Reading is for the child, and I know they're going to follow
it - she has the same Naturopathic doctor on the case, who
has followed many of out cases with splendid results. So, if
you wish to Sponsor THIS Reading we will be glad to furnish
you a complete report from the physician when the child
recovers - which I'm sure it will. If on the other hand you
do not wish to Sponsor it, but had rather choose one for
yourself there in New York that you can observe more closely,
please say so and it will be perfectly agreeable with us -
and in that case you can return the copy and I will send it
to another Sponsor.
We appreciate your cooperation during the past year, and
trust we may continue to have your help and interest. I'm
sorry we did not get to see you when in New York in the fall.
I'm enclosing some Report Blanks, and would appreciate your
filling out ones for us who have come to you with their
Readings - these reports are such a great help to our
indexing system, as they enable us to SPECIFY the ailment by
the common term used by physicians. We have just received
a Report Blank from an Osteopath in Massachusetts (of the
CCO), reporting his experience with following the Reading
directions for a young boy [See case [
1215]] who has
"spinomuscular paralysis from a fracture." He says, "There
is a definite sign of nerve regeneration which in time, if he
follows instructions, may result in fair recovery." Isn't
this remarkable? The parents had him treated by the best
MD's who said there was nothing to be done - the nerves
were dead. The Reading recommended an Osteopathic Nerve
Specialist. Now he's shown GREAT improvement in the last
six months. We haven't seen the patient OR the doctor!
Kindest regards. Sincerely, [signed] Gladys Davis Secretary

11/27/44 Miss [
1387]'s letter to GD:
It looks at last as if I have found someone who will do the
thing we have tried for so long. He is very much interested
in Mr. Cayce's work and would willingly follow instructions
that come from him.
He is 47 years old and very Jewish, even to accent, but there
is a sweetness and goodness about him and a desire to help
that is very evident to any who have eyes to see. He charges
$5.00 a treatment but it is well worth it.
His name is Dr. A. Shapiro and his downtown office where he
sees patients on Tuesday and Saturday is at 33 West 42nd
Street Suite
822-23. Dr. Gardner Murphy who used to be at
Columbia was now giving a series of lectures on psychic
matters at the new school of social research and he went to
him about taking his course. Murphy reserved the right of
accepting or rejecting anyone who applied. He went along
talking to him all right about various things in their
interview until Dr. Shapiro mentioned that he had read "There
is a River" and was interested in Mr. Cayce's work. Murphy
immediately froze and said, "Oh, you are - well we gave him
some tests. Where do you think he gets his information?"
Shapiro said he presumed he got it through some supernormal
means whereupon Murphy said, oh he studied medicine - we gave
him some things to diagnosis and he was all off on them - and
without more conversation he dismissed Shapiro and was to let
him know if he qualified for entrance in the course, but he
never heard from him again.
