Dear Gladys;
I have waited until after the rush of the Congress to get in
touch with you about the check on my health reading of June
12, 1939. In order that you may have a written record of the
case for your files I'll note here what I told you during our
conversation in New York this spring.
Due to two facts; first that I was very well pleased with
what Dr. Cappel had done for me and it seemed sort of
ungrateful to leave him when he had done so much and been so
kind and second that Dr. Dobbins and I got off on the wrong
foot when I tried to talk to him about treatments that night
at the Congress last year I took the reading to Dr. Cappel
and he agreed to follow it.
I switched to the series of treatments as the reading had
suggested instead of the once a week and he gave special
attention to those spots the reading brought out. I took one
small bottle and 2/3 of a large bottle of the Codiron tablets
and only stopped when they broke my skin out quite badly.
This is the reaction my body has always had to iron in any
form that doctors have tried to give me since a child. I
took the artichokes and okra and ate the green salad for my
lunch as was suggested. In other words I did everything as
was directed EXCEPT change from Dr. Cappel to Dr. Dobbins
and that may be the reason for the failure to have had any
beneficial results from the reading. Why it should make any
different [difference?] when the instructions were being
followed I don't know but these are the facts.
To date I still suffer from the terrific headaches. They
seem to come for no rhyme nor reason but they wreck me while
they last. Another thing that developed after the last few
treatments that I took was that I would go down feeling all
right and before the treatment was over or the next morning I
would have developed a terrific headache. For the past 10
weeks or so I have not had any treatment and the headaches
have not been any worse nor better than when I was taking
them. Dr. Cappel was thrown down the subway stairs by a
couple of boys and has been ill with a flock of broken ribs
and not doing any treating as you can imagine.
When it is convenient for you all please arrange a date for
a check reading for me. If Mr. Cayce reads on Saturday
afternoons that would be the safest time for me to be sure
to be able to be home and quiet. If that is not possible I
could make it on a Wednesday afternoon.
I seem to recall that the check reading was $10 am I correct
in this? I can't seem to locate the material I saw that in.
When you let me know the time tell me the correct amount and
I will send you a check.
I don't want Mr. Cayce or anyone to think that I feel that
the reading was in error. I am quite sure the fault is
entirely with me. If he does not feel that Dr. Cappel is the
proper man to handle the thing I'll go to Dr. Dobbins even if
we do pull each other's hair out. Maybe that's what I need
someone to get mad at me.
Hope you Congress was a huge success. I'd have loved to have
been present.
I finally finished the novel that I have been working on so
many years. It is all typed and ready for a publisher if I
can find one. It ended up with 360 pages and 131,950 words.
Tidy little volume what? My "friends" on the other side tell
me to just wait and the contact will be made for me. I'm
sure I don't know what to do with it. In fact it scares me
to even think of having the nerve to think I could write
anything that a hard-boiled publisher would think of
handling. When I made some such remark at a meeting I was
called down saying that I had no right to criticize it as I
was merely the channel for the information and it was not
mine to talk that way about.
Please remember me kindly to everyone and I'll await your
pleasure,
Sincerely, [

7/07/40 Notes from [
1387]:
The following questions I think are the things that worry me
most;
(1) If further treatment is necessary should I change from
going to Dr. Cappel to Dr. Dobbins?
(2) Can the cause of the headaches be removed entirely or
just helped so as to make them less frequent?
(3) What is the condition of the kidney?
(4) Will I ever regain my strength enough so that I can live
a more normal life and not be eternally tired? Or should I
just resign myself to this condition and make my mental
adjustment accordingly?
(5) Need I be concerned with the evidence of arthritis in my
hands and feet?
Please let me know how much I am indebted to the Association
for the check reading and I'll send my check gladly.

Wednesday
Dear Mr. Cayce;
Well I'm finally back to work and I think it is now safe to
say that any Wednesday afternoon that is all right for you
I can arrange to be home to have the reading.
My headaches are still the thing troubling me. When I am
free of them it seems silly to be concerned about them - Then
when I get a bad one as I've had the past two days, life is
not worth living.
I had the opportunity last night for the first time to hear
Manley Hall speak. I never heard anyone speak so easily.
I hope you are feeling better than when I heard before.
Sincerely, [

her his father on Wednesday, "...Passed over with a heart
attack." [See under
