1/05/73 Mr. Daniel Rotenberg, A.R.E. Member of 21, rue de
Moscou, 75008 Paris, FRANCE, wrote several observations
about material he had read in the Circulating File on
PINWORMS: "...Concerning Intestinal Worms, of which I have
a long history, probably beginning with some picked up from
my mother at birth. In any case ever since I began to make
serious efforts to get rid of them, almost four years ago,
everytime I get a clean bill it never lasted very long until
I turned up some more; usually slightly different from the
previous ones. My last bout with them was at the end of
last June, when one morning I turned up a living worm with
my bowel, hopefully called an oxyure in English, and in any
case the technical name is oxyurus vermicularis. Rather
remarkably, the evening before I was out for dinner at a
friend's, and I had eaten a fair amount of raw green cabbage;
this is very unusual for me, as normally raw cabbage of any
sort irritates my mouth and I never get to eat anymore than
a mouthful or two of it before giving up. I had the bowel
analysed: lots more eggs and microscopic worms, all of the
same kind, and no others. I also went out and bought myself
a head of green cabbage, and set myself to eating a leaf a
day every morning, a time of day when I do not normally eat
anything: after that my mouth was in such a state that I
could not eat anything before lunch anyways. Nothing to
report for the next ten days, after which my doctor decided
he would try me once again with some pills I had previously
successfully taken. They are called Povanyl here, the active
ingredient is 'Pyrvinium Embonate, corresponding to Pyrvinium
Base', dosage of 50 mg. per 10 kg. of body weight. I have
had no trouble with worms since then. My own impressions on
the cabbage: insufficient to rid me of the worms, but quite
efficient in weakening the resistance of the parasites to an
appropriate drug."
