5/31/65 Dr. J. R. Phillips' post-operative instructions
to Mr. [
1467]:
OFFICE: CA 7-9269
AREA CODE 713
JOHN ROBERT PHILLIPS, M.D.
1407 Medical Arts Building
Houston, Texas 77002
Mr. [
1467]
Instructions for Post Operative Care For Patients With
Emphysema or Asthma.
Surgery for these conditions help over and above medical
measures. Many patients require less or no medicine after
surgery. If medication is needed use the things that have
been of help before, avoid things that have caused trouble
before. Smoking is not good.
1. For Infections: Colds or flu can precipitate trouble.
Should the sputum be yellow or green, infection is present
and an antibiotic is indicated.
Terramycin - 250 - mgm every 6 hours.
2. For Secretions: These are lessened or eliminated. If
they are troublesome use Saturated Solution of Potassium
Iodide - 10 DROPS IN JUICE FOUR TIMES A DAY.
Isuprel Glossett - 10 mgm under tongue every 4 to 6 hours.
3. For wheezing or tightness:
4. For Swelling: These conditions cause a strain on the
heart, if congestion or swelling of the feet occur use
Hydrodiuril - 25 mgm before breakfast and at bedtime.
5. For Peptic Ulcer: 25% of our cases have an associated
peptic ulcer, if there, is indication use an ulcer diet
and take.
6. Cortisone: If on Cortisone try to withdraw to prevent
complications from it.
7. Oxygen: Many require it no further. INTERMITTENT
POSITIVE PRESSURE breathing will help relieve bronchospasm
and get up secretions.
We do not speak in terms of cure but in terms of additional
help over and above anything that has been previously
offered.
Consult your local physician for advice at any time and I
would like to make a check-up at 2 months - 6 months and
1 year or at anytime there is any question.

6/07/65 Mr. [
1467]'s report: "For the first time in years I
can breathe from my navel. I am coughing up phlegm which
has accumulated all this time while I haven't been able to
breathe deep enough to cough it up. It is too wonderful for
words to be able once again to breathe clean, fresh air."
11/03/65 He reported that for
2-3 months he had been somewhat
immobilized due to arthritis in his lower back. The doctor
had recommended a belt to support him. Said he was going to
start taking Atomidine as recommended for him in a rdg. long
ago to be taken periodically, and that with watching his diet
he thought he should be alright. [See 1467-17.]
7/08/66 He reported that he had been active for some time now
and was feeling very well.
2/28/67 Mr. [
1467] died from a heart attack, his aorta
bursting.
GD's note: Mr. [
1467] really made application of the advice
and was a tremendous influence for good in the life of his
son as well as his stepson, [
415]. The stepson came across
several States to be present for the funeral, saying that
Mr. [
1467] had been a real father to him.
