9/18/39 HLC's ltr. to [
1510]:
Dear [
1510]
I was very glad to learn that you were down in this part
of the country again and I hope to see you real soon.
I have been pretty well tied up all summer and my movements
are still rather confining. The situation is this.
My friend, Tom Sugrue, whom you will remember as the author
of "There Is A River", and the boy who I told you was writing
a book on my father's life, has been here all summer. About
two years ago he had a severe attack of Arthritis. After
considerable treatment in hospitals in New York, he came out
in pretty bad shape. For about six months now, he has been
following suggestions from a reading and has been improving
slowly. He is still unable to use his legs and has to be
moved from bed to chair to wheel chair. Waiting on him and
assisting in giving his treatments, keeps me pretty busy.
The difficulty is that I have to be here at specific times
each day for I have to get him up and get him back to bed
again. Usually in the afternoons I take him for a ride on
the board-walk and in the wheel chair and he then sits up
until ten or ten-thirty.
All of this sounds like a pretty hard situation but in many
ways I have enjoyed it very much and have been glad of the
opportunity to be of some help to him. He is finishing up
his own novel and writing some on my father's book. I am
trying to get a book published on "The Mysteries of the Mind"
finished and off to the publishers before the first of
October.
I am going to try to arrange some way to get over and see
you, in the meantime, let me know if there would be any
chance of your coming over to Norfolk at any time and I will
arrange to come in and see you there. I had a very peculiar
dream about you not long ago that I would like to tell you
about and there are a great many odds and ends of
conversation that we should catch up on.
I certainly hope things have been going nicely for you in New
York and that you have prospects ahead for some real
activity.
Give my kindest regards to your mother.
Sincerely, HLC
1/27/43 EC's ltr. to Mr. [
437]: "...When you find the
opportunity and see Miss [
1015] let me know what you think of
her. I am anxious because the readings say she can make a go
of the stage and screen..."
2/01/43 Mr. [
437]'s reply: I sent for Miss [
1510] and have
placed her in contact with some radio people where I think
she will have an opportunity, should she qualify, for gainful
employment until such time as we can dig up something for her
on the stage. We can always give her an opportunity for
anything that we have going, but as you know these are few
and far between. I have explained to her that because of
your interest in her, that she should feel free to come in
here any time she feels like it and we will do all we
possibly can to advise with her and help her.
2/17/50 She ordered another copy of Thomas Sugrue's STRANGER
IN THE EARTH to give away.
10/52 N.Y. lecture list sent in by Helen Wenzel: "Miss
[
1510] attends lectures - was in Thursday group in '51."
