One of the most dangerous conditions that threaten women's
* [Mrs. [

yrs. later Dr. Hargraves himself died with appendicitis. He
had operated on her for what he thought was appendicitis and
in process of the operation discovered it was tubal
pregnancy.]
lives is pregnancy in the tube rather than the uterus. In
a large New Orleans charity hospital there were 1,059 such
cases in 40 years. Unless there is early diagnosis, the
patient may die from hemorrhage if the tube ruptures. Women
should learn the chief symptoms of this condition. In 97
percent of the cases there are pain and bleeding as soon as
the baby's growth creates pressure on the tissues. There is
a risk of confusing this condition with others that cause
pain and bleeding. These cases emphasize the importance of
a woman's consulting her doctor the moment she suspects
pregnancy.
