7/24/57 Verbal report by sister-in-law, Mrs. [
263] [wife
of [
1467]]: "[
1540] had never been married, and during
menopause she became enamored with a boy in his early
twenties. [
1540] was giving him anything he wanted - a car,
spending money - setting him up in an apartment, etc. All
the time this boy was going with someone else. [
1540] didn't
know this and the family didn't want to tell her about it for
fear of what her mental reaction would be. We [[
1467] and I]
took [
1540] in our home for about two months, trying to help
her follow her readings. It was more than we could cope
with. She talked of nothing else but this boy. Later [
1540]
went to live with a girl friend-nurse and while there she
went to Dr. Redwood. She told him that she didn't want to
live and was going to kill herself. With this the doctor
recommended that [
1540] be sent to Williamsburg, Va., to
the mental institution there. [
1540] and [
1467]'s father's
word was a command, and [
1467] maneuvered [
1540] into going
up there with him. It was, and still is, my opinion that
[
1540] was not crazy at all. So far as I know [
1540] was
not having an affair with the boy. When conditions became so
exaggerated, with [
1540]'s money being drained, [
1467] and I
went to the boy and told him that if he did not withdraw from
the situation we would 'put the law' on him. Apparently this
frightened him off, and this brought about a complete break
so far as [
1540]'s association with him was concerned, and
this also sent [
1540] into a worse mental state. [See
1540-4 through 1540-6.]
"[
1540] is now recovered and holding down a very good job."
2/05/62 Her stepmother died. Miss [
1540] continued to live
with her father and to take care of him in his old age. We
were told that she was one of ten children and that she spent
the early years taking care of the younger children before
her father remarried.
