9/10/50 Report by niece, Mrs. [
1523]:
Today Aunt [
1563] was at ..., at the ... home there. After
some few years of tension due to differences of opinion in
the family circle between herself and her sister-in-law,
[
2867] - Aunt [
1563] had again been going up to the old
home place. Something came up to to disturb her, and she had
what doctors call a cerebral hemorrhage. She was taken to
the hospital Sunday night of the above date at which time
there was some numbness in the right hand - and inability to
stand on her right leg, along with blindness.
9/28/50; she
is unable to feed herself - is kept in bed - and is not able
to see anyone, though she is unaware of the extent of her
condition. She is being attended by Dr. Taylor [Waller L.
Taylor, M.D.] of Virginia Beach - and the nurse reported to
Aunt [
1601] that her condition is very uncertain, though the
family is not being told of this. Mentally she is better -
that is - her attitude is not so negative as it has been.
The nurse reported that "medically she did not see any
improvement."
5/10/51 Brother's letter to her son, [
1664]:
Just now I want to first consider your Mother. Her eyesight
is much improved Dr. Via says [C. E. Via, M.D.?] and I saw
his comparative charts which prove that point. However her
eyes are not her most serious trouble. The trouble is in the
brain, and she does not realize how serious her condition is,
and that is just as well. She is nervous and very easily
upset emotionally. After giving the matter much thought and
consulting her doctors we are recommending a nursing home
where we hope she can go for a period, a month or two at
least to see if that will help.
5/59 Report by niece, Mrs. [
1523]: "Through Aunt [
1601] I
learned that Aunt [
1563] took a turn for the worse - had to
be taken from the rest home to the hospital where she did not
appear to know anyone - was being fed through the nose - had
to be turned every two hours, etc. The last I heard she had
recovered sufficiently to be returned to the nursing home,
but was still being fed through the nose."
6/16/59 Sister Mrs. [
1601]'s letter: "[
1653] is asleep now
and is much better than when I saw her last. Answers Yes or
No clearly to most questions and will smile sometime when I
tell her funny stories, which is almost unbelievable compared
to the way she was when I saw her last. [
1664] was be here
shortly to give her lunch - she eats better for him than
anyone - so he comes every day - has only about two miles to
come."
