4/19/38 Mr. [
1568]'s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce,
Arctic Crescent,
Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you for your letter of April 14th, enclosing the
reading which I requested and which certainly covers the
general condition for which I have been treated.
I have been to see Dr. Frank Dobbins, given him your
memorandum and have had three treatments from him so far.
I am following the course of treatment prescribed by you,
and I am giving you on a separate page attached hereto a
brief resume of my case history [see below].
I have lost or mislaid the form of application for associate
membership in the Association for Research and Enlightenment,
Inc., for which I was recommended and sponsored by [Mme.]
[
1554], and I gathered from the pencil notation on this slip
that she had paid $20.00 fee, and if you will send me a
duplicate form, I will fill it out and return it to you.
I also request that you let me have as promptly as possible
a life reading, and I am enclosing herewith check to your
order for $20.00 covering this. My reason for haste is that
I am sailing for England on April 27th and should like to
have this reading before I leave.
Very truly yours, [
1568]
CASE HISTORY
I am 51 years old and have had practically no illnesses since
childhood, and in particular have never had any trouble with
my stomach. I had one operation in 1936 for the removal of
a non-malignant tumor from the left side of my chest, the
tumor being above the muscles, under the skin; and I had a
further operation in the same year on the maxillary antrum,
having had what is known as a Caldwell-Luc operation, which
consists of making an opening under the lip over the teeth
and breaking through the bone into the antrum cavity,
cleaning it out and making an opening from the antrum
cavity into the nasal passage at the low point. Both of
these operations were successful.
On August 10, 1937, I had a very severe attack of pain,
which was diagnosed as a spasm of the pylorus, and the
diagnosis made at that time gave the cause as an inflammation
of the gall bladder. The attack lasted for several days and
was accompanied by some temperature, and at one point on the
evening I first had the attack, I was given an injection of
morphine. The condition had entirely cleared up by August
18th, but I was in bed from the 10th to the 15th, the only
treatment being constant application of a warm electric pad
to the affected area.
On August 23rd, I had a gall bladder series of X-ray pictures
taken, after taking some form of dye for the purpose, but
apparently the dye did not get into the gall bladder, for
the X-ray pictures did not show up the gall bladder.
On August 30, 1937, I had a series of gastro-intestinal
X-ray pictures taken after liquid barium had been taken,
which disclosed nothing out of order in the stomach or
intestinal tract.
On October 4, 1937, I had a further severe attack, identical
with the first, except that it lasted only forty minutes
and had entirely subsided before a doctor could be reached.
However, this doctor pronounced the attack as being gall
bladder colic.
On October 7, 1937, I had a complete physical check-up,
from which the following may be of interest to you:
"ABDOMEN, is somewhat obese. Today it is quite soft.
There is no tenderness anywhere even on deep palpation.
Murphy's maneuver negative. Moebius sign is negative.
BACK is normal. GENITALIA, not remarkable. Hernial rings
intact. RECTAL EXAMINATION is negative. Prostate is firm,
not enlarged. EXTREMITIES, are entirely normal. REFLEXES
are normal, very slightly hypo-active. Superficial responses
are entirely normal.

be at the upper limits of normal in size.

"STOOL: Dark brown, semi-formed, full of vegetable material
(corn kernels). Iodine-eosin smears negative for cysts.

On October 20, 1937, I had a further slight attack of what
I understood to be gall bladder colic, and thereafter at
intervals ranging from one to eighteen days, I have had up
to the present forty-one attacks, varying in intensity,
usually slight, lasting from ten to thirty minutes.
Following the attack on August 10th, I went on what I was
told was a gall bladder diet, which eliminated all fats,
butter, bacon, cream, and all fried foods, and on November
22nd I commenced a three times a week exercise and massage
course under the supervision of a masseur from Arthur
McGovern's Health Institute. The diet, plus the exercise,
has resulted in my weight being reduced from 196 to 170
pounds, with about five inches off my mid-section.
I have not at any time felt sick, and as a matter of fact,
except when having the actual attacks, felt as well as I
have ever felt, but I kept trying to find out more about
what was the matter with me, and on December 1st I swallowed
a tube and had gall bladder siphoned out, the bile being
analyzed and found to be quite normal, showing no pus or
any evidences of inflammation.
On January 11, 1938, I was examined by another doctor, who
came to the conclusion that my trouble might have been
caused by a uric acid stone in my kidney, this being one
of the types of stones which would not show in an X-ray
plate without first taking dye intravenously. I accordingly
had x-ray pictures of my kidneys taken after the dye
injection, which showed no kidney stones and the kidneys
perfect in outline.
On February 8th, I had a further gastro-intestinal series
of X-ray pictures taken, and in this instance I quote from
the report of Dr. H. M. Imboden his summary:
"No evidence of an organic lesion of the stomach, which
emptied normally.
"Pressure films show a shadow which we regard as indicating
the presence of an ulcer in the duodenum.
"No gross distortion of the duodenum is observed.
"No certain amount of stasis is observed in the colon.
No evidence of disease of the colon is seen. There is
an angulation in the proximal portion of the transverse
colon which is freely movable, shows no evidence of adhesions
and which does straighten out.
"Slight incompetence of the ileocolic valve."
On February 8th, and on eight other occasions up to March
31st, and always after at least two days' diet of nothing
but eggs and milk, stool tests show positive reaction for
occult blood, which you will note was not present in the
test made on October 7, 1937.
"On March 29th, I again swallowed a tube, to which was
attached some cotton thread wrappings, the tube passing
through the pylorus down to the gall bladder, the bile
was again siphoned out and tests still showed no pus or
evidences of inflammation (handwritten note: the threads
however showed positive but faint occult blood). On the
same date, a further attempt to get X-ray pictures of my
gall bladder was made, I having taken the required dye for
the purpose, but again X-ray pictures did not show the gall
bladder, as once more the dye for some reason did not work
on my gall bladder.
On March 31st, I had a liver function test, done by
Dr. Rhodes of the Rockefeller Institute Hospital. This
report showed everything to be normal.
From March 2nd up to the present, I have been on a diet
of nothing but eggs, milk and oatmeal, this being prescribed
in the belief that I have a duodenal ulcer, although my
several doctors agree that I do not have the usual ulcer
symptoms, and throughout the diet period mentioned above,
I have had just as many attacks of pain I had had before
in a similar period.
I have only been following your recommendations since the
evening of April 15th, on which date I had my last attack
of pain, so that at the moment of writing I am unable to say
whether or not a change for the better has occurred by reason
of your recommendations.
4/19/38 HLC's ltr. to EC: "...Called [
1568] late this
afternoon and went over there about 9. ...You certainly
hit the nail on the head in his reading. Absolutely perfect.
You know this by now as he sent you a case history - don't
you wish they were all like it. He is so thorough.
"...I thought I had been in nice homes but this apartment
- well, I counted 10 rooms and am sure there must be that
many more. Beautiful and natural to the people is the word.
He is head of ... Steamship Co. [Not consciously known by
EC at time of rdg. - see 1568-1, Par. 1]. Has office in
... Quite a line they say. Talked with Dobbins about him
this afternoon. [
1568] is following treatment to limit in
smallest detail and quite tickled over the whole thing. A
nice person..."
4/19/38 He wired questions for a second Physical Reading.
