6/01/38 Letter from [
1609]: "...Doctors have diagnosed it
as: nervousness; over-sensitiveness; mother-attachment;
inferiority complex; manic-depressive with schizoid
tendencies; one psychologist even called me 'a dementia
praecox case'. Of course when the learned doctors don't know
what ails you, they hide behind a barrage of big words. Most
of them agreed, however, that I am anemic so they prescribe
pills and tonics...
"Lately I had some X-rays of my guts made and they found a
number of adhesions in the region of the caecum (congenital)
which caused constipation and auto-intoxication. The
prescription was mineral oil 3 x a day - which certainly
has helped me overcome somewhat that 'blue feeling.'
"I have had some treatments by osteopaths, with temporary
relief. Now where is the real source of all my troubles?
"Has it anything to do with my eyes? I wear glasses,
although I do not believe in them. There is a slight
astigmatism, according to the oculist - (the left eye
is stronger than the right; the glasses seem to have the
effect of further weakening the weak right eye) - I am very
sensitive to bright light, which makes me squint and frown.
When I try to read my eyes become tired easily and it is
difficult for me to follow the trend of what I read - my
mind becomes blurred and it starts wandering.
"It has always been impossible for me to assert myself with
people when I say anything they usually say 'what?' and make
me repeat myself - proving that I do not speak distinctly.
As a result, I keep much to myself and have developed a
dislike for people. Also, because I am not alert, I have
often been taken advantage of in business deals, etc. There
is a marked lack of coordination between the eyes and my
hands. For that reason I have never much indulged in
competitive sports or games. I never learned to play cards
as I have a very poor memory for facts, figures, names, etc.
- nor can I concentrate for any length of time.
"I am always tense, especially around the neck and shoulders
- also very restless and fidgety. I get tired easily and
my back hurts when I do any physical work or when I try to
sit straight in a chair; something in the small of my back
becomes very uncomfortable and I slouch.
"One doctor said that my liver was not functioning right. I
have taken a course in public speaking, also singing, but did
not get much out of it. When I try to sing my throat becomes
very tense and hurts. Anything wrong with my throat? There
is a very slight discharge of phlegm and a little blood in
the morning.
"Another question: Can you give me any advice re sex
functions? (I am married - have 3 children, normal,
separated from wife, as far as sex relations are concerned.)
"Lately I have taken up painting. I have been told that I
am of an artistic nature. I do get more enjoyment out of
handling colour than anything else I know of. Of course, at
my age, painting can only serve as an avocation. Three years
ago, I lost my business, home and all my savings. Since then
I have tried a number of things, but without having found
myself..."

"...Dr. Mary Miller wants me to tell you that Mr. [

been here for two treatments, that she finds the reading most
interesting and is very sure she will be able to help him..."
