1/04/39 Mrs. [
1636]'s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
When I wrote you last, I was feeling so miserable, &
discouraged I couldn't of anything else but complain.
I haven't made any changes as yet, as to Doctors.
I'm still trying to get a "hunch", or a lead as to which is
the best.
I get the electrical treatment from Dr. Miller, & I get baked
at Dr. Clark's.
Of course I haven't taken any treatment from Dr. Clark for
three years or more; & he was using heat on my limbs, by
placing them in a cylinder shaped concern, & the perspiration
would just stream out from my limbs. But he considered that
better than electricity, or dry heat, & said he could get it
all out of my system if I'd continue as he didn't think I had
arthritis at all, & if I did, it was in a light form.
And Dr. Miller said the other day she didn't think my muscles
EVER DEVELOPED PROPERLY WHEN A CHILD. There had been a lack
of muscle building food in childhood.
Of course, as a child I had everything to eat that grew on a
farm. My dear old Mother was a wonderful cook & my father
was an extravagant provider. So if I missed the vitimines
[vitamins] that were muscle building it was due to
over-cooking, as the old timers did believe in everything
being WELL COOKED. And another thing the "VITAMINE FADE'
[FAD?] was not in STYLE THEN. And no doubt I was left out on
that, & am getting the results of it now, IF THAT IS ALL
TRUE.
Sometimes I think MORTAL MIND just has to change its tactic,
to suit the mortal mind times. The doctors are continually
changing their minds about results of their own concoction.
What was THE THING last year, this year, is all out.
I don't say they are NOT TRYING to find out something that
is for the good of all mankind, I'm the kind of man, that
believes in the mortal. But really I think there are some
that have realized there is no such thing as matter or
mortal. In one of your letters you said, "Mortal man, &
mind were all one & the same". They are; to this extent.
As a man thinketh so is he." If we think mortal thots, we
are just as mortal as we think.
If we begin to realized that God is a spirit, & everything
He thot into existence is spiritually conceived. Then
everything is a mental concept, & spiritual. It's all the
same sum & substance, Man & mind are one. Consciousness is
not only the builder, but the BUILDING MATERIAL. No mystery
then about a mental treatment reaching the body. If we give
the mind the proper building material it constructs a better
body - in my way of seeing. Yet, it sometimes seems, "the
hardened sinner is the healthy sinner", & how account for
that. Now what got me on to this subject - is Dr. Miller
saying my muscles were not properly developed from childhood.
That is some Dr.'s decision when he failed to get to the
bottom of some ailment he couldn't find. Just had to find a
place to put the effects of his failures.
Back to the neglect of childhood or some of his forefathers.
I told her - "my teeth were not on edge, by my grandfather
eating sour grapes", that I had out grown that idea.
To me NOW! is the accepted time, & there is no other time
but NOW. And NOW! I should have my freedom. Do you work
mentally for your patients? I never heard you say, but I
think you must, as you wish them to work for you. I realize
the truth for you every morning, I start my day right. Of
course I recognize & acknowledge the ONE MIND GOD, as Supreme
Ruler over all lesser minds, That you are ONE WITH GOD.
And no power or circumstances can defeat the purpose God
has for you. I put all thots of fear, or death, out of
my consciousness. I see you as LIFE IDEA, Mind, being
manifesting God to all His ideas. I don't see an old man
fragile with age - It's YOUTH ALWAYS, the perfect man.
Well Dear friend, I guess I've bored you long enough. Our
maid rubs my legs each morn with the ointment you suggested.
I heat the olive oil, in a glass container, & add the other,
& use while hot. I can get it on very nicely that way. I
haven't been over to see Dr. Clark but I know he will try
to conform to your dictations. He may laugh at me for
believing in you, but he's a good man & won't censure me
& will say - "All right we will do just everything possible
to get this thing pushed off the map". His daughter is a
C.S. & he's very agreeable to it.
But I want YOU to feel satisfied. I don't want to quit Dr.
Miller if you'd rather I'd continue. I can't go this next
Friday, so I think I'll write her a letter that I'm laying
off for awhile. Then if I don't get along I can always go
back.
We will be leaving in March any way - as my daughter & I
always make a trip southward & end up on the farm & get home
after Mothers Day in May.
Maybe we will be seeing you either going or coming - or maybe
you'll be out while we are at the farm. I'm glad you heard
from [
528] - when I think of her case, I always feel
you'll get it all figured out for me, that I must not be
discouraged. I'm glad she is well & O.K., for she is
a lovely girl, & has such a lovely Mother [
865].
Wishing you a Happy, healthy, prosperous New Year - I'll say
By. By. Let me hear from you,
Love to all your Family [
1636]
Did not hear Hugh Lynn last Mon. night, as I was out, didn't
get home 'til after it was over. Am sorry to miss any of
them. Will try to hear the next.
1/10/39 EC's ltr. to Mrs. [
1636]:
Dear Mrs. [
1636] -
Thanks for yours of the 4th - do hope you are feeling much
better. Don't know but you are right waiting for the hunch
as some would call it - but hope you have gotten the lead and
are doing better now. Just feel you will be a lot better tho
when you get away from the climate, and where it is a bit
warmer and not so much dampness.
Think why you were given the rubs with oil were to supply
you with mussel [muscle] building food. May take a little
time - for you have possibly quit growing physically - one
never does spiritually and mentally - and will have to be
revived by the massage.
The Vitaman [Vitamin] fad - will be here for some time - all
knew something of the sort existed - but hadn't given it a
name - may change its name in time but will mean the same
thing.
Yes - body - mind - soul - are one but each has it attributes
- each has its place in human experience - they must
coordinate - cooperate just as in the God-Head. God, the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. These are one, yet
each with it's function to perform in human experience.
Matter is nothing - save as we as individuals give it power
over us. Matter - is a result of something, of a thinking,
a use of something that is spiritual, and it is according to
the purpose - the desire - for its use, as to whether we make
it good or bad.
We are constantly trying to justify ourselves into this or
that belief. Truth needs no justification - Only
Glorification - by it's use in HIS NAME, and that is Glory
for all.
Today - Now - is all there is - for while mortals live by
time - there is only relative time - for time also is but
a manifestation of something else - Yes - of God - for
terrestrially - Time - Space - and Patience are
manifestations of God, and His Love and Mercy are shown in
same - toward man.
You have just the idea - for your morning meditation - and
can we come to the awareness of that thought in our very
being we can as He said "move mountains."
You be guided by your own conscience - but if you wear your
self out making the trip - and can get as good or better
right at you it would be unwise to make the trip.
Am still looking forward to having that talk with you -
having time to at least get some of the things that are of
interest to each of use thrashed out. Am sure you realize
what I wish is for you to get results and not to satisfy any
pet idea of mine - for of my self can do nothing know that -
and it is according to one's faith that any help comes - each
of us may only be channels of blessings to our fellow man -
and when we even wish our own pet ideas adhered to we do our
neighbor harm.
Yes [
528] is doing nicely - is carrying on - tho with a heavy
heart - over a material happening in her life - and am sure
such is a real burden to some - becomes heavier than we can
bear alone. OH! would we learn to lean more on HIS arm.
Thank you again for your letters - they are most helpful to
me - and just hope I don't bore you. Hope you heard Hugh
Lynn last evening - thought it very good - is at least
opening the way for people to THINK on spiritual things will
they but do so.
With all good wishes - please remember me to Mr. [...]
and Mrs. [...].
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
1/13/39 Mrs. [
1636]'s ltr. to EC:
Friday Afternoon
Snowing to beat the band
Dear Mr. Cayce
Well I went to see my old Dr. here this morn. & took a
treatment. Dr. Miller said Monday when I was in, that she
had a letter from you, & she seemed very willing, & very nice
about it. And said if it made it easier for me, to go to
this Dr. but she would like to check up on me in a month to
see if I had improved any, so I told her I would come in for
a check up.
Dr. Clark said my legs were much improved over what they were
when I came in to him 3 years ago. I was glad to hear that
if I can't get up & down the steps. I know there is an
improvement at times, then other times I can hardly get
about. Nature of the disease I presume.
Dr. Clark said (when he read your reading) "My dear girl,
that is the way I treated you 3 years ago. Now I'll continue
the treatment but I WON'T USE THE OINTMENT." So I said "All
right, I can use that myself." And he said he understood my
case, & was treating just as you had suggested.
The Osteopath certainly don't have any use for Chiropractic,
& he said he didn't see how I had endured it. So I told
him she didn't break any bones. He said "You don't need your
bones cracked, or rough treatment. You need your nerves
soothed." So I'm going to try it out for a month, & see
what she says with the check up.
She has so much to do, she has put in two more tables & has
her place all partitioned off in little work rooms. I think
she really has more to do than she can do justice to. Of
course she just gives you a few cracks, & goes on & cracks
the next one. She wouldn't use the oil on me, said it
spoiled her hands, her sense of touch on the machine.
But the other girl did. She massaged in on.
Our Maid massaged me good when I came home this morn. You
see we live close to this Dr. & after I come in the maid can
do the work; I think no doubt that is just as good. My left
hand is all swollen & inflamed to day I could hardly comb my
hair. I surely don't want it to get in my hands, for I can
still play the piano for my own amusement. And if it gets
in my hands I'll be in a fix. My elbo [elbow] is quite upset
also, in fact my whole arm. I'm going twice a week - Tues.
& Frid. to Dr. Clark & see what can be done & I'm going to
keep up the oil & also the Equalizer.
You know I don't think Climate has anything to do with it.
For I didn't feel any better known in Florida, or any place
we ever ramble.
We just get out & ramble because she like[s] to drive, & go
different places. I think a change does anyone agood - just
anything to change the mind - I can go to a good musical, or
a good movie, & forget myself completely. That gives nature
a chance to build herself up. So I think any kind of a
change that is harmonious & restful is always good. That's
one reason I like to read everything that's along the mental
- I get new food for that - it seems to be necessary for me.
The Bible never gets old, I love it & sometimes I wonder why
we read so much of other things, when it's ALL right there.
And if we would follow HIS teachings, we would not need
anything else. To me it's the REAL STAPLE of LIFE & the
other literature is a sort of a side dish.
Give us the real staples of life & we could live; but we all
enjoy the little "nic nacks", side dishes. So, the Word of
God is the real life giving principal, but I like to know
the other fellow's views on it, some times I accept it,
some times I put it aside, & think that is not for me - my
digestion is not just right. It may be too rich, maybe not
rich enough. No harm in that, it makes me better able to
get the other fellow's view point - better able to live
agreeable with my fellow beings.
It's nice to be able to see the whole work's, & KNOW just
ONE MIND WORKING. It's sweet to contact the many different
workers, & see where you can plant a seed, you let it fall
- maybe it grows, maybe another finds it, cultivates it, I
never look back to see if it did or didn't find lodgment.
I just know good thots are never lost - & THOTS are things.
Well, well, here I go rambling on such a long letter & saying
nothing after all. I listened in to Hugh Lynn's broadcast
the other night, I've only missed ONE. God bless them for
their work. But I don't think they are any nearer solving
their problem - I don't think anyone can ever tell just what
it is - that's the mystery. But if you listen to it, it
will come to you when needed. I was always so sure of the
truth, I never doubted it, or questioned from whence it came.
In fact that's all O.K. to me. It was too sacred to talk
about it & when I went to talking it, bad results was my
experience. So I closed the door on it all. I transferred
my thots to the ONE power - & shut out the lesser. Maybe my
growth has been slower - but none the less - SURE.
May God bless you all.
Sincerely [
1636]
I enjoy your letters & don't think I don't.
1/27/39 Mrs. [
1636]'s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Well I guess it's time was writing you again.
I am very glad to say I am feeling better in the legs. Can't
go up & down stairs as yet, with freedom, as I hope to do.
But I think I am walking better.
Of course I haven't given myself a try out, since I quit
going to N.Y. that is I haven't so many steps to climb.
As soon as the ice & snow is gone I think I'll try going over
town, to see how I hold out on this walking business. I
haven't done any walking to amount to any thing since I
stopped going in to Dr. Miller. I'm not saying this out
of disrespect to Dr. Miller, & don't take it that way.
But I think Dr. Clark comes nearer carrying out your plans
than Dr. Miller did. I don't think Dr. Miller ever studied
Osteopathy. At least she never gave me that kind of a
treatment, not even after you asked her to change.
She continued with the Chiropractic work, only in a less
strenuous way. She had a diploma hanging on her walls, of
an Osteopath - but she didn't practice it. Of that I'm sure.
However I'm not thinking the time or money was lost for she
evidently did some good for Dr. Clark spoke of my legs being
greatly improved since I went to him 3 years ago.
But I can see where in, he is trying to carry out your idea,
all but the "rubbin" business & he lets me do that at home
which is quite all right, as we live close to him.
I think they ALL hate to have any one tell them any thing
differently than what they think they already know.
I feel that every one should have an open mind; & be willing
to try other people's ideas, & not be so COCK SURE they know
it all. It's true, we have to have faith in our selves, to a
certain extent or we'd never get any place & I think we have
to have faith in what we are doing to be a success. But we
can't forget there are others that may know a thing or two
that might add to our storehouse of knowledge a great deal,
& I don't hesitate to say so, when the time & place seems
ready for my say. Dr. Clark is a student of Dr. T. A. Still
the founder of Osteopathy & the funny part of it is,
Dr. Still got his information from a spiritualist, from
a medium. She taught him how to work. But he didn't like
to admit it to any one. But he was very spiritual, himself.
So I find that Dr. Clark has a lot of it in him. But he
says the disgusting part of it is there are so many faikers
[fakers]. So many that resort to mechanical means to help
them out to work on the weaker minds.
He says he has visited their camp up in N.Y. state, somewhere
I forget the name of the place. But that he finds where ONE
is genuine many are false. But I told him this morn, that
we find that, in every walk of life that we can't let that
bother us. I had a long talk with him this morn. He is
really a very busy man, but I got him started on the question
& held him for some time. He wound up by saying "Mrs. [
1636]
you are a very unusual woman, very broad minded & see from
every angle; & you respond to treatment just like a youth, or
a person years younger than you are; I can't think of you as
being a woman of mature years. I can only think of you as
youth." So I think that was saying a lot of nice things, &
I only hope I have the COME BACK, he seems to think I'm going
to have.
Now in speaking of Dr. Miller asking me to come back in a
month to let HER CHECK UP ON ME. She meant to check up on
me with that machine she is crazy about. She LOVES & ADORES
THAT MACHINE she has, so that's what she wanted to test me
out on. Wanted to see if I had gained any vitality, she
claimed she put vitality in me with electricity. But really
I seem to have more endurance now than I did. I DO SEEM TO
BE BETTER, & I am so proud of it, so happy & so thankful,
I just go thanking God, WITHIN MY SELF most every step.
I don't say it out loud, or they might think I WAS OFF -
but I say it, just the same, & I'm sure HE hears me.
I listened to Hugh Lynn's broadcast, Monday night.
Now don't tell him this, or discourage him; but I can't see
that they are getting at the bottom of this, or giving an
explanation that really explains it. Of course I may not
understand just what it's all about. I mean I may not
understand their purpose. But I think God's ways are past
finding out.
If it's of God - "nuf ced" - if it isn't, still it's a
mystery. I don't think they will ever solve. But I DO NOT
WANT TO DISCOURAGE HUGH in any undertaking.
It's an unseen force that no one can explain away. And only
those who have experienced it can have an idea.
Well I think I've rambled long enough. I'm thankful I feel
improved, I pray it may continue.
Good by & God bless you all, [
1636]
Excuse the length of this letter. When I get to writing I
forget to quit.
1/31/39 EC's letter to [
1636]:
Dear Mrs. [
1636]:
Thank you for yours of the 27th - so glad to know you are on
the right track and are feeling better. Am sure Dr. Clark is
fine - seldom do you find an Osteopath that is not good - and
a good one is not afraid of work - for that is what it takes
for a good Osteopath. If the information is partial to
any mode of treatment it's Osteopathy; had the privilege
of knowing Dr. T. A. Still during his life in fact had a
treatment from him, and hear some of his story you referred
to - but as I understand he received it himself. Not from a
medium - have never met but have had a bit of correspondence
with Dr. Hildreth [A. G. Hildreth] his brother in law - these
are the older ones in Osteopathy Dr. Woodall [Percy Woodall,
D.O.] who was one of the Dr.'s at the So. School of
Osteopathy is a very good friend of mine known him for
possibly 30 years or better - as all so Gravett [Wm. A.
Gravett, D.O.] one of the Pres. of the Nat. Ass'n of Osteo -
knew many of the first class of graduates. So [I] am
thoroughly sold on Osteopathy.
Dr. Miller is good am sure - it may be she is so busy that
she depends on instruments to do the work she might do - I
don't know. Do not know much about the machine she is so
wrapped up in - tho have suggested its use a few times.
Hugh Lynn is doing a very good work I believe - don't think
he expects to determine just the source of the activity that
produces the phenomena - but to get people not ashamed to
express their opinion as many have been. Was very good last
evening I thought - I liked the manner that both Dr. Warner
[Lucien H. Warner, Ph.D.] and Hardwicke [Henry S. W.
Hardwicke, M.D.] handled the discussion.
It is a force or influence that has to be experienced may
never be explained except to say - as some one has said - "It
is of that force we call GOD" and can more people be brought
to that realization it will not have been in vain - believe
we all need to realize HE is indeed closer than our hand.
And will we but harken we may as they of old hear HIS voice
with in our selves - and that I believe is the main purpose
- and whether we give it the name of - ghost - hunch - extra
sense perception - intuition or what not we are speaking of
the same thing.
Just hope you keep on the improve - and that when you try out
your improvement to any extent hope you find you have gone
even farther than you expected.
Let us hear when you ever find time - like your long letter
appreciate them more than can tell you.
Thanking you and with all good wishes from all to you and
yours.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

Mrs. [
1636]
..., Mich.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Well it's been some time since I wrote you & I've been
through a lot of suffering, it couldn't be imagined. I think
I told you Miss Miller always hurt my side so badly, I
forbade her work on my side after I saw you at the Hotel.
Also your son told her what to do. But I guess the work was
already done for my appendix was so inflamed when I went to
Dr. Clark he said it was in very bad condition. So he never
worked only according to your instructions. But I had to
have it out, & you know I think it was the severe treatment
she gave me that brought it on. She said she was breaking up
my adhesions, but I couldn't stand her treatments any longer.
They were more strenuous than I needed. I don't see how your
good spirit, or guide could have sent me to her.
I tried so faithfully to do as you wished, but I don't think
she did, & I DON'T THINK SHE WOULD. She has a head of her
own, & she's going to use it. I'm not saying this to knock
on her. But I certainly received no benefit. For I've
always been better at times & worse at times. So that's the
way I was while I was going to her. Since I've had this sick
spell my legs have been very bad, in fact, I'm going to have
to wear a brace on my right knee, can't trust it, & it's
quite painful to try to walk. So am going to have the brace
to support my knee so I can gain some strength. Can't gain
strength in bed, or sitting in a chair all the time. So I
have to do something to get to walking. You see, after my
appendix operation, I began having gall attacks & I kept that
up, 'til I had five (5) very hard attacks. I was so very low
they had to feed me for days through the veins, not a drop of
any thing went down my throat.
And they had to inject salt solution to keep my heart going -
the gall attacks affected my heart action.
You know, I think if I had followed out your instructions my
self, & had not gone to Miss Miller I might have gotten along
better. I don't feel that I needed any of the treatment she
gave me, for I am not stiff - that is not my trouble. I
didn't need the chiropractic treatment at all.
Well I hope you won't feel I'm knocking on Miss Miller. But
I'm sincere in saying I don't think she will ever carry out
any IDEAS BUT HER OWN. Of course, it's as your son says, one
has to have confidence in themselves - still if she accepts
your patience [patients], she should respect your wishes -
You give her too much lead, or string as the saying goes.
Mrs. [...] & Mr. [...] left Monday for the farm, will be
back by the 30th. I will have to wait another year I guess.
Well good by.
Sincerely, [

Dear Mrs. [
1636]:
Rightly good to hear from you again - too bad that you have
had to go through so much suffering - and possibly from just
neglect, do hope tho you will soon be feeling fine again and
able to get around like you would like to. Too bad if you
have to wear a brace for any length of time - but suppose
if one gets accustomed to it they may come to depend entirely
on same. Yes, it is quite frequent that after an
apendicerial [appendicial] operation there comes trouble
with gall duct - happens to be one of the things that I know
full well by [my own personal] experience. Trust you will
be able to get that going alright and have as little trouble
may be expected from same. Too bad for any of us when we
have to have this or that cut on - don't think HE intended
that we be carved on every now and then.
Am planning on being in N.Y. again next week for another talk
at the McAlpin. Hope you will be able to get in would like
to see you and talk over all this with you - it is to be on
Wed. the 26th will be there Wed., Thurs., and Frid.
Haven't been so well myself for last few days - just over did
myself a bit - now will have to rest a bit.
Let me hear from you when ever you can.
With sincere regards and asking to be remembered to Mr. [...]

Dear Folks:
Well I'm still in the land of living, am improving slowly
over what was last spring.
They said I'll never be able to walk again without the brace.
But I discarded that in 3 weeks, & am walking better than I
was walking when I got down last Feby.
Haven't as much endurance as yet - but I'm getting stronger &
hope by springtime to be going still better. Perhaps normal.
Went down to the farm last Aug. & enjoyed the trip. Haven't
been into N.Y. as yet on train - drive in with my daughter
some times.
Trust you are well & not working too much, that you have a
wonderful Xmas.
Lots of love to you all your family, [
