8/09/38 Letter of [
1659] to EC: "...Do you feel that after
NINE years of arthritis - with swollen and enlarged joints
and painful (age 45) I can find relief?
"I will give you a bit of history in those nine years. The
summer of 1929 my knees and feet started swelling so much so
I would go to bed, swelling would subside but couldn't walk
without pain. I started with shots, then had teeth and
tonsils out. Got more helpless as time went on and by
January 1 - 1930 was bedfast. Doctors didn't know what to
do. So July I was taken to Mayos on a stretcher - Stayed
there six weeks, had typhoid injections, could eat a little.
My weight was 133 pounds - I weighed 89 when taken to Mayos.
Learned to walk in severe braces, came home in six weeks.
Gradually discarded braces - walked with canes. I gained,
now weigh 124 pounds. I have it in my wrist and hands
but knees and feet, especially knees are my main troubles.
I drove my car but could never walk well. And never set
on a low chair. My knees were drawn - Mayos straightened
them out. I faired very well until summer of 1935 my left
knee gave way. I was in bed four months, then carried on
stretcher to Henry Ford Hospital. Left knee drawn that was
gradually straightened while there and ONE brace made for the
left knee. A sinus operation - aspirin my main medicine for
pain. I had every test and examination while there. The
doctors felt the poison from sinus would keep me from getting
worse - I was in wheel chair. That was the only infection
they could find. I came home with brace and wore brace
a month - then used cane - got stronger again, drove my
car (all I do and have done in the 9 years has been with
difficulty). The first of April 1938 my knee - the one brace
was made for - is so painful also my hip - I barely get about
with a cane. The knee folds up. I walk with it stiff - if
I should bend while walking I might fall. The x-ray at Ford
Hospital showed tissue and cartilage most destroyed - the
bones grind when I walk, and slip out of place. I push up
with difficulty and most of the time someone has to lift me
up. I take 10 grain of aspirin four times a day and one
grain of thyroid - doctors orders. I have fought and tried
to conquer it as I realized it was up to me to do my part.
This is a very tiresome letter I am afraid it will be
difficult for you to gather satisfactory facts.
Respectfully..."

REPORTS
8/21/38 [
1659]'s letter to EC: "...I have my medicines
ready after a little difficulty with obtaining Chloride
of Gold. The druggist mixed and proportioned for me.
"Am I to discontinue the ten grains of aspirin four times
a day - for pain and curative for arthritis and the grain
of thyroid each day. I would appreciate information
about these medicines soon as possible."
8/23/38 Letter of EC to [
1659]: "...Yours of 21st to hand
- glad you have the things together to give the suggestion
a fair trial - Would not discontinue the aspirin entirely as
you will possibly need that to ease the pain - but gradually
decrease the amount as the other things take effect.
"The Atomidine should take the place of the Thyroid - but if
you find it necessary may be taken again - but believe except
possibly for pain there will be no need of taking anything
other than suggested in the information.
"Am just hoping you will have as wonderful results as others
that have tried the suggestion for such condition.
"Glad to hear from you at any time, with all good wishes..."
9/02/38 Letter of [
1659] to EC: "...I will take my second
Epsom salt bath tonight. I will start on second round of
Atomidine tomorrow. Am through with first round of Chloride
of Gold and Soda combination in distilled water. The
medicines are such small doses and only once a day, I can't
see results either way. I continue with aspirin but no
thyroid as Atomidine replaces that. Massages have helped the
nerves. My left knee is the same though the hot Epsom Salt
bath feels good at the time. The bones in my knee seem to
fall off or from each other. That is due to lack of tissues
and cartilage. There may be a tiny bit between the joints
but the x-rays don't show it. When I get up each time I
have to stand before taking a step and rub the knee and place
the bones some. Then I am not sure of it holding when I put
weight on it. And it is so painful. I walk with a cane. I
wear a large size elastic knee cap on it when it is not too
sore to the touch - when it isn't too tender and sore. As I
wrote you before - carry it stiff while walking. My opinion
- the knee is hopeless. And only a matter of time before it
won't hold me up at all. I feel you understand better now
the condition of the knee. I have tried to make it plain so
that you will realize the knee is the joint that bothers me
the most and how futile it is to hope for much.
"Thanking you for your interest..."
9/06/38 Letter of EC to [
1659]: "...Thanks for yours of 2nd,
can understand very well how discouraged you have been and
how hopeless it must all seem to you at times - but am of the
firm conviction all is possible with God, and as He is the
maker of all that is here - and our bodies are constantly
renewing themselves - there is no reason why you should not
expect and work toward being rid of this trouble eventually;
have known some very severe cases - some even worse than you
have described your own and they have gotten wonderful relief
- recently had letter from a lady [Miss [
951]] - who a little
more than a year ago with the same trouble as yours - was
pronounced a hopeless invalid - had to sleep in her wheel
chair - for she was just that shape and could not lie down -
she wrote me just a few weeks ago she was driving her own car
- so what not you be able to drive as it were your own knee
to do just what you wish. Just you keep up the good work
- think it - expect it - and work for it, and HE will not
disappoint you,
"Thank you for writing me, and hope you will do so every
chance -
"With all good wishes..."
