My Dear Mr. Cayce:
The Physical Reading of Sept 5th was only received on Monday
Sept 12th - I had left ... earlier than I had intended,
because the weather turned very cold & damp - I was not sure,
anyway, to which address you would send the 'readings' - the
delay was of course, due to its having to be forwarded back
to ... The 'Life' reading has not yet arrived, but I am
hoping that it will come soon. However, I am going to sum up
what I believe you to be telling me, concerning the various
inharmonious manifestation revealed to you - & my reaction
to same - with the name of the woman to whom I went today for
Hydrotherapy treatment - & some questions that have arisen in
my mind about her treatments, your meanings etc.
1st - You find a slowing up of the circulation which in turn
slows - or HAS slowed up the eliminations as well as the
assimilation & all other functions of the various organs.
No organic inharmony - all purely functional - but causing
a GENERAL letting down, so that even the daily relationships
with others, which in a normal condition would be
pleasurable, are wearing rather than enjoyable. Would you
further explain the sentence which I shall quote in full
- "Where heretofore all such activities have brought an
expectancy to the body, exuberance or joy, they now become
rather those of dreads, those of fears, IN THE SENSE THAT THE
BODY FEELS THAT THERE MUST BE OTHER THINGS THAT MAY BE DONE
THAT MAY FILL THE PLACE."
Then in your suggestions as to how 'to add to the forces of
the body' & to bring about the balance which has been lost
- you say "We would not use strong medicines - or not other
than specific activities within self, as related to some
mechanical applications"? Would you explain?
I had started taking some Vitamin B. Capsules - called
"Glaniej[?] Food" prepared by the Anabolic Food Products,
Inc. Chicago Ill. - said to contain Brain Suprarenal,
Suprarenal Medulla, Ovarian, & Pituitary Substances from
female animals - combined with Celery, Pumpkin, Lettuce,
Asparagus & Sea Tang in carefully determined proportions
for nutritional purposes" - "One Capsule to be taken before
each meal as a supplement to the diet" - This was prescribed
by the Osteopath, Dr. Charles Jennings [Chas. H. Jennings,
D.O.], in Bayview Mich. to whom my sister [
1632], & I went
for adjustments. Shall I continue with these capsules or
not? I do take headache pills of various sorts as I have
a great many headaches. I don't know whether you meant my
head as one of the 'extremities' that ached, but it certainly
does. I also have difficulties in my back which you did not
mention, but for which I take frequent osteopathic treatments
- in Birmingham I go to Dr. Ralph Wilson [Ralph A. Wilson,
D.O.] who seems a very conscientious young man, & very clean
- at least he helped me more than any previous osteopath had
been able to do.
You do not mention osteopathy for me. I wonder why? Of
course all the outer manifestations may clear up as the
circulation improves, but the almost constant pain in my left
shoulder HAS to have relief. I was surprised that you didn't
mention this particular inharmony.
The great weariness & 'lack of buoyancy' you felt, is
certainly & sadly true - but I KNOW that God's Will IS
Wholeness & that it both can & shall be attained, & I
shall gratefully follow your suggestions as a part of the
outworkings of His Plan. One seems to get to a place where
one can no longer handle such situations alone, & of course
I DO believe that God is Life & that His Mighty Life Force
works thru ALL channels when we see it that way & are open
enough to be able to accept it fully.
I went to Mr. Lindquist [Mrs. Mary Lindquist, Graduate
Masseuse] for my hydrotherapy treatment. She is a Finnish
woman about fifty or so. She uses a steam cabinet bath -
is that what you meant by a 'fume' bath?
She rubs one all over with Epsom Salts, after having soaped
& washed & sprayed one thoroughly - then one lies down
in a wooden cabinet, (with the head out, of course) & the
perspiration seemed to come QUICKLY & without the feeling
of faintness that cabinet baths I have tried to take in the
past, seemed to bring then. There is a hot, followed by
a cold shower - & a massage first with cream or oil, & then
alcohol. She said that she would get Bay-rum before the next
one. She has only a regular electric applicator (not Violet
Ray) & she used that up & down my spine. I wonder if you
could tell me where I can get the kind you advise my using?
I might be able to have it used at home, after the therapy
treatment.
I spent three weeks in June at Dr. Hay's Health Sanatorium at
Pocono Penn. on a non-residue liquid diet - hoping to clear
up colitis & to alkalise my system - the colitis was much
better in a time, but most of the Summer I have had very
loose bowels - diarrhea, in fact - which of course does not
mean PROPER elimination, but merely an irritated condition in
the intestinal tract & colon - sot that I have followed Dr.
Hay's suggestion of frequent enemas. Then Dr. Jennings said
to take Pillsbury's bran until the situation became adjusted,
but it never has yet arrived at that delightful place - or
state - & is still a problem. Raw fruits seem to add to the
difficulty, so I have abandoned them, except for orange juice
- but this has been a very depleting ailment - I have had it
since last May.
If you have any further suggestions I should appreciate
hearing what they are -
I am, at this same time enclosing a request for a Physical
reading for my youngest son [
1691] - who is anxious for your
help. I know that you will do what you can TO help him, & I
am going to ask if you could speak of the harm to a sensitive
highly organized system, of nicotine & alcohol - without
disclosing that I had made any suggestion.
He has voluntarily, for the time being, given up the latter
- tho so many of the young people seem to feel it a necessity
these days, that unless one is strong-minded enough to stand
out against his friends, it's hard for him to abstain. It
just breaks my heart to think of all these young creatures,
so full of life ANY way, turning to such a destructive form
of amusement & stimulation.
I shall hope to hear from you soon. Am enclosing the
circular from Mrs. Lindquist, & the check for my son's
reading.
Sincerely yours [
1678]
P.S. Will you please send me some of your literature.
9/19/38 EC's letter to [
1678]:
Dear Mrs. [
1678]
Have yours of 14th - have just returned from a few days
of much needed rest, hope to be able to be of even better
service to others. Thank you for your letter and the
description of your feelings and inharmonies.
First will make the appointment for your son - Monday Morning
the 26th 10.30 to 11.30 E.S.T. and will ask that you give
me his address for that hour - sincerely hope we may be able
to be of a service. Please let me know if the time set is
satisfactory and if any special or specific questions that he
would like to ask - hope the suggestion may be presented with
out any question on same.
Now for your readings - hope you have the Life reading long
before this and have been the gainer there by.
Like the announcement of Mrs. Lindquist - believe she has
just the treatment for you - tho you can get the Violet Ray
machine at most any Chain drug store and were you to have
that given you each evening when ready to retire would not
be amiss.
Yes from my interpretation of the information you have the
proper perspective. The Massage should be enough - but if
not then would have Osteopath treatments also. But believe
they will be sufficient.
Now for questions - "Where heretofore all such activities
and etc." This implies simply this, where at one time all
activities brought joy to you - now there is rather the feel
of duty in such - and not the feel of freedom as once had,
- and you often feel something else might be better done.
This is of course the mental reaction - and not a physical
condition - but the feel arises from a physical condition.
Do I make my self clear?
For the very reason that the condition is functional -
not organic the suggestion is mechanical adjustments -
Hydrotherapy given, rather than medicine. The "within"
here is the mental outlook - and no better reason for the
mechanics of the body and not medicines - wondered too why
when it said mechanical adjustments - that it did not suggest
the Osteopath - for the information is rather partial to
the Osteopath. But apparently the information - takes every
phase of the experience, and suggests that which if applied
consistently, will be most beneficial. That is why we are
trying to make a careful systematic study of the phenomena.
Hope have been explicit enough - if not please don't hesitate
to write me - for to be of a service is my whole purpose.
Thanking you and hoping time set for your son is satisfactory
and trusting to hear from you about your Life reading.
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
