2/04/26 EC's letter to [
1713]:
Miss [
1713]
Philadelphia, Pa.
Dear Miss [
1713]
Replying to yours of recent date, as I understand from the
reading, your glasses were to be worn for close work, such as
reading, sewing, and such like; anything that would strain
your eyes, of course it isn't good for them. As regarding
the mental attitude, this means, as I tried to explain to you
before, just how you feel about your own condition; that is,
if you continually worry yourself about this, that, or the
other, regarding your condition, or constantly magnify your
own ailments, all this would be bad; but knowing in your mind
that you're doing the right thing, and that you're going to
be persistent and consistent with what you do - forget about
it! Employ your mind with something else. I think this is
what it means by mental attitude.
Now, in reference to exercise, I am sure this means that the
moderate amount of exercise - some of the specific exercises
as have been given you heretofore. To be sure, they would
not be taken in such a way as to undo what the osteopath has
done, but rather as an assistance. They were not to take the
place, as you see, of the osteopath, but a help with what he
is doing. As in reference to the lesions in back of neck, I
think just what has been said about exercise shows you what
is meant. If you allow your body to be perfectly dormant,
why the lesions would form of themselves. The exercise of
the head and neck and shoulders must be sufficient to assist
then what the osteopath does, by loosening muscle and tissue,
so as to prevent lesions from forming. It is the natural
thing, we know, for every muscle of the body to work in its
normal manner.
My understanding, Miss [
1713], in regards to being
persistent, in the way of approach, etc., means that you
present an attitude of indifference toward such conditions,
and this you shouldn't do; for as long as you do this, of
course, that prevents any approach. The thing for you to do
though is to come down here next summer, and we'll find him
for you!
