Dear Sir:
There is a reference to a Mr. Neice, or Neese, or Nice, or
Nies??? - in reading No. 1800-14 (enclosed) which indicates
that this individual could provide helpful information with
regard to understanding the operation of the Radioactive
Appliance. I am doing research on the Radioactive Appliance
and would very much like to contact Mr. Neese or his family.
This past summer I visited the Columbiana collection at
Columbia University in New York City and found the following
listing in the Columbia University Directory for
1926-27,
Page 27:
"Nix, Foster Cary Asst. Metallurgy; 511 Mines; Furnald Hall."
A check at the office disclosed that Mr. Nix was employed at
Columbia University from 7-
1-26 to 6-
30-27. Note that
1800-14 was given on 2 March 1926, which is FOUR MONTHS
BEFORE Mr. Nix was on the pay roll. There are no listings
for Neice, Neese, Nice, or Nies - so "Nix" with the French
pronunciation appears to be the fellow Mr. Cayce was
referring to. The papers listed for Nix, F. C. in the
attached A.I.M.E Publications list index for
1926-35
indicate that Nix was working on lead-antimony mixtures at
the time. This fits in with Edison's work on lead-acid
storage batteries. Nix is almost certainly the man Cayce
meant...he probably had been hired at the time of the
reading...perhaps to conduct summer school classes beginning
in July.
So much time has passed since the reading that it is likely
that Nix is deceased - and Columbia U. has no forwarding
address for him. Would it be possible to put a note in the
ARE News asking if anyone knows of the whereabouts of Nix's
descendants? It is an unusual name, and his family would
certainly know about his long time association with Thomas
Edison. I have already looked up books about Edison and
lists of his associates, the so-called "Edison Pioneers".
Nix does not appear in any of the lists. Still, I believe
Cayce was right.
Thank you for your help.
Very truly yours, [signed] John F. Sutton, Ph.D
