1/18/39 Mr. [

Mr. Edgar Cayce,
Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Judge:
[
1812]*, the new man who is working for me has had a very
bad foot for some time and he wants a physical Reading. Will
you be good enough to arrange a time for him. The doctors
are recommending an operation and he would like to get the
reading so as to know what to do. Also, he has been pretty
much run down and needs a good going over.
I am enclosing herewith Mr. [
1812]'s application. He is
sending you his check for $5.00 and later on as soon as he
can afford to, he will send you the additional money.
You will give this body a complete physical examination and
tell it how to overcome the troubles that are affecting it at
the present time, and answer the questions afterwards.
1: Is an operation necessary on the foot?
2: If necessary, would it be better to have Dr. Glaser, of
3715-81st St., Jackson Hts. or Dr. Ellmore of Garden City to
do the work?
3: If not necessary what treatment is recommended?
4: What is causing all the colds to the body?
5: What treatment is necessary to correct this?
6: Where is best place to go for weight reduction?
7: What is best diet to follow - outline in detail?
8: What exercise is advised?
9: Any other suggestions?
With kind regards to all of you,
Sincerely, Mr. [
257] [via Mrs. [
189]]
P.S. Mr. [
257] has gone over to Ward's Island to see about
the [

189]'s note, in longhand:] Mr. [
1812] is a very
close personal friend of mine & has been for many many years.
Will appreciate anything you do for him. Mrs. [

me hear from you as to how you come along.
Hoping to have been of a service

instead of the operation that was recommended, that Dr.

Mr. Edgar Cayce,

My dear Mr. Cayce:
I thank you very much for sending me Mr. [
1812] for
treatments. Your diagnosis is absolutely correct and
tremendously interesting.
He brought an X-ray with him taken by a physician which
shows distinctly a spur on the bottom of his heel,
tremendously sensitive, walking with great difficulty,
leaning very heavily on a cane and with two rubber cushions
in his shoe supporting the heel. I had an analysis made of
the urine and it shows a trace of albumen and pus and also a
trace of blood, but under any case not very alarming.
After two or three treatments he already is walking without
the assistance of a cane and his blood pressure has come
down to normal and he already has reduced about eight pounds
and is feeling very much better, he says, and very much
pleased with the result. He is not well yet, of course.
There still remains some tenderness there, but there has
been really a very remarkable improvement in his condition
in such a short time.
Please find enclosed a check for $12.00 covering my
membership fee.
With best wishes, I am
Very sincerely, [signed] L. H. Backman [LHB:MS] Enc.

Dear Dr. Backman;-
Thank you for your report on Mr. [
1812]. Had understood
from other sources he was doing fine - thank you very much
for your help. There are one or two very warm personal
friends that have been suggested that see you. Haven't
heard from them as to whether they had been in or not.
Thanks also for the yearly dues to Ass'n. Sincerely hope
you find something worthwhile in the Ass'n.
With all good wishes

My dear Mr. Cayce

sixty second birth day and many happy returns of the day.
TO you who have devoted yourself so entirely and unselfishly
to the happiness of others, is given the glorious retrospect
of a useful well spent life. What a satisfaction it must be
for you to look back upon the years that are passed and
recall those smiling faces you have made happy by your
charitable acts and words of affection.

My dear Mr. Cayce:
The psychic information on epilepsy [2/39 A SERIES OF CASE
STUDIES OF PSYCHIC INFORMATION ON EPILEPSY, prepared by HLC
using Cases [
561], [
1625], [
1653].] I received is indeed
extremely interesting both as to the reading or diagnosing
the cases as well as the treatment suggested and the result
obtained. I can see indeed a great benefit to such cases
and many others as well by your help. In fact I think it
is a tremendous field and a tremendous opening for psychic
reading. I have read them with great interest, and I hope
that some day we may have a sanatorium equipped to take care
of many so-called incurable cases.
Mr. [
1812], the last patient I received from you is getting
along wonderfully well. He was in for a treatment last
Thursday, the 16th, and he told me he walked about thirty
or forty blocks without any discomfort whatsoever and without
his cane, and he is very much pleased. I thought you would
be interested to know this.
My best wishes for a happy birthday and many happy returns
of the day.
Yours very sincerely, [signed] L. H. Backman [LHB:MS]

Dear Dr. Backman;-
Thank you for your report on Mr. [
1812] - had a letter from
him also - said he was doing fine. Thanks ever so much for
your cooperation.
Have several other types of reports on cases Dr. - if you
haven't those - might like to see them. Arthritis,
a peculiar type of skin disease and some others. If you
haven't them, would you care for a copy of the reports?
Be glad to send them, if you wish.
Thanking you and with all good wishes

Thank you, Dr. Backman, for yours of the 1st. Am sending
the reports on two other cases. Any others that we have,
will be glad to send you from time to time. There is
a new one about every three months or oftener. There has
been several other cases of late referred to you. Hope you
find them cooperative and can be of a service to them.

4/04/39 Mrs. [

"Sorry you yourself are not so well. That's really bad.
We can't afford to have you sick as too many people are
dependent on you. You ought to see the [
1844] boy. He
just sparkles and seems like a changed person. Also
Mr. [
1812]. He walks like anyone else and is certainly
happy that he had a reading and followed it. There are
others too, but these are outstanding."
1/30/40 HLC's letter to Dr. Backman's:
Dr. Louis H. Backman,
40 West 55th St.,
New York City
Dear Dr. Backman:-
It has been several months since we heard form you. We
wonder how you have been getting along. I hope that the New
Year will bring you great success and happiness.
We are enclosing some report blanks which I hope you will
use to furnish us reports on individuals who have come to you
with their Readings for treatment. Such reports, as you can
well understand, are very valuable for our files, and we are
anxious to bring each case up to date.
I shall also appreciate very much your letting us have a
comment on your own Life Reading, indicating specific points
mentioned in the Reading which you feel fitted you and were
of particular interest. The interest in this type of Reading
is growing, - we have almost a thousand of them now in
our files. Each one contains valuable information, and
especially is interesting when the data on any given subject
can be compiled from a number of Readings.
I know that you will be interested in our Expansion Program,
which is going to make possible the preservation and
scientific study of the thousands of Readings now in our
files. You recognize, I believe, the tremendous value
of this material which we have collected, and can well
understand the importance of this work which we outline for
our Expansion Program. The enclosed pamphlet will give you
an explanation of the details of this program. I am sure
that we can count on your cooperation in carrying it to a
successful conclusion.
It is my hope that the time will come when you can find it
possible to study these records firsthand. As I have already
told you, our files are open to you at any time.
Sincerely, Hugh Lynn Cayce, Manager [hlc:gd]

My dear Mr. Cayce:-
I am very sorry not having answered your letter of Jan 30th
before this, but I have been very busy and my spare time has
been taken up working on my income tax report.
I am very much interested in your extension program. As I
remember, there was an effort in that direction last year.
I hope that you receive some encouraging support. I shall
indeed do my best to co-operate with you for such a worthy
cause. I am at present preparing a report for a case your
father sent me. As you know I have only received three
cases in all, Mr. [
1812], Mr. [
1610] and Mrs. [
349].
As I received no copy of Mr. [
1812]'s reading while treating
him I have written him asking for same and await his reply.
Likewise in Mr. [
1610]'s case. The diagnosis in each case
was absolutely correct and the results of the treatments in
all three cases were more than gratifying.
With my best wishes for your continued success.
Very sincerely yours L. H. Backman
