8/04/42 (Tuesday) [
2072]'s letter to EC:
Dearest Eddie,
First of all we want to thank you for the so very low number
of 19 for There is a River. We did appreciate your enclosing
a folder on the book in your last letter. Thank you very,
very much.
And for your lovely letter.
I went to Richmond all day last Friday and we had one of the
soldiers here all day Sunday and so I haven't been able to
reply to your letter until now. The soldier, Mr. Briant, has
been organist for the Episcopal Services the last few Sundays
and [
1861] and he found so much in common to talk about, we
spent a lovely afternoon. He has played the organ for many
of the N.Y. churches and for Wanamakers. He is a lovely,
intelligent, humble and sincere person. I can think of
nothing which fits to describe him so well as "unless ye
become as little children ye shall not enter the kingdom of
Heaven." I don't know exactly why, but it seems to fit him.
[
1861] and he found their musical loves most alike, and then,
to top it off, they both are devotees of TRAINS.
While in Richmond Friday I tried to get some data for [
1861]
regarding Barney A. Seay. No luck! Letters to N. A. Booker,
Hopkinsville, R.F.D., was returned, after travelling 7
routes and not finding Mr. Booker. We then addressed it to
Clarksville, Tenn. and it came back unclaimed. The Bureau
of Vital Statistics, Henrico County, has no records of births
previous to 1853 nor could I find a B. A. Seay listen in
their index to records. Investigation in the County Library
archives brought forth a record of two "B. A." Seays, one a
Color Bearer in the "14th Regiment Virginia Infantry" known
as 'Painesville Rifles' of Amelia County" commanded by Capt.
Wm. M. Miller or Mills. The other joined the Brigade of Va.
Volunteers, under Capt. Gilbert V. Rambants Apr. 18, 1962 at
the age of 21 at Suffolk. I wish we could find some other
clue somewhere. [
1861] was quite disappointed.
I have been thinking lately of the Easter experience with you
and the "little folk" on the island. Had you, or I, or both
of us, been reading of the Resurrection in the Bible before
this came to us? Will you please call this experience back
as completely as you can and as detailed as possible for me.
Your mention of it in your letter seemed not to tell me very
much of it - maybe hoping that I would someday ask to know
more of it? Tell me now, please, Eddie.
Guess I will just have to work hard at applying the teachings
of Christ and seek and seek and seek within SELF for His
guidance in applying the "instructor," "aiding" "helping"
aspect, eh? as per the reading. Seems like wherever, in
each incarnation where I came in contact with you, that was
my work. Well, I love that work and you, again, if anyone,
are helping me back to expressing it.
The school - how I should like to see it come about and how
we should both love to serve it or the Association in any way
we can, ever!
Wednesday morning
Will you please help me on Answer 6 of my last reading
[2072-10, Par. 9- A]. 2nd line: "For, again, the law
IS IMPLIED AND IS ACTIVE." What does this mean?
A.7 [2072-10, Par. 10-A] was not the answer I was wanting as
you can see from the question. I believe the reason for same
was because of the spiritual nature of the answer preceding
it and that the whole reading was more spiritual and mental.
The aura chart and symbols didn't seem to be accessible
except the mental explanation of same.
A.11 [2072-10, Par. 14-A] that mother and I were helpers in
Palestine; "sisters in spirit, purpose and flesh." Wasn't
that beautifully expressed? How she keeps, in the present,
the ideals that must have been hers then! for she, too, must
have been near to the Master. Her words and her thoughts are
blessings upon so many. Night before last she was "thankin'
the Lord" for a nice rain that came during the night "so she
could set out her iris bulbs." The other day she expressed
an attitude so beautifully and faithfully I want to repeat it
to you. [G...] has been worried about getting a place in the
Army or service where he can be of the most value. To go in
as a "buck" private would not only be hard on him at his age
but there must be a place where he could be of more value -
with the diverse experience he has had. Altho mother says
she hopes his going will be the last sadness for her, she
said to him, "Don't you WORRY about it son. I've asked the
Lord to put you where you can be of the most help. But that
doesn't mean you must quit lookin'. You must keep on trying
to find your place and the Lord will help you." Those are
not her exact words for no one could say them like she does.
But HOW MANY correct attitudes were expressed therein!
I think I have received my blessing in being able to live
with her and learn from her again in this life-time.
Back to the reading: A.19 [2072-10, Par. 22-A] Yes, how
I feel and know that understanding through Christ would be
the one thing that would help me to help others, but I have
needed the readings very greatly to clarify and guide me on
some few false ideas - to straighten the path with that one
thing "He is the Way, the Truth, and the Light." I sought
other ways, often forgetting that one beautiful Truth. I'd
say you have straightened me out so I can seek HIM, then.
May His Blessing abide with thee alway for that.
But I must close. If you read anything else between the
lines of the Reading, help me and guide me with it, won't
you?
[
1861] is wondering if the Board Reading said "no" regarding
him?
Received Miss Patterson's letter this morning which we thank
you for forwarding.
We've had two cool days now to break the terrific heat, with
a nice rain again this morning. If you still haven't had
rain, Eddie, let us set a time to pray for it together. The
need must be very great for it there, by now, and it would
help many others as well as yourself.
Deepest love, [
2072]
8/13/42 EC's letter to [
2072]:
Dearest [
2072]
Whether am equal to answering yours of the 4th or not - don't
quite know. There are times when think of you and read and
reread your letters that I just wouldn't permit my self to
even try and answer - would say many things shouldn't, so
say nothing. Glad you got your order in so as to have a low
number if you wished it like that - have passed the 75 mark.
Now that is not bad for this short time - tho hope they will
be a goodly number. There are certainly scattered tho order
yesterday - 2 from Boston - 2 from Seattle - and 1 from
Peoria, Ill. That is well distributed, don't you think?
There are some lovely young men among the soldiers - and it
is a real pleasure to find one that has something in common
with you - am sure it was a real joy to the young men to find
[
1861] and to [
1861] to find the young man - each will be
much better for the meeting.
Am disappointed that you haven't been able to locate
something about B. A. Seay from the records - am sure must
be there some where - guess will have to take a hand in this
some where - will first chance drop a letter that way and
see what can find. Know too well it is all there some where.
Why haven't been able to make connections do not know - but
will have something to report to you about that in hope not
too far distant.
Yes - I recall the day of special experiences on the little
island - very well. There lived back of your fathers place,
a family of Pikes, Carter Pike and his wife and two boys John
and Carter Jr. John was about 18 while you and I were some
11 or 12. The other boy was much older. There was a spring
on the creek bank called Pike's spring - they kept boats on
the river or creek there were a few deep holes in the creek
where the boys fished John was very nice to you and I tho
both your folks and mine did not like for us to have much to
do with these boys. They were sometimes pretty rough - John
told us however of the Island and how pretty it was there and
offered to lend us his boat for us to visit the Island. We
had played often with the little folks in the barn stable and
the strawrick near the stables, but had not known the Fairies
or the prixies of the water or creek. Do not recall that
we had read any thing in particular about these folks before
that day. We had taken the little folks as being a very
natural occurrence and as have said all through you and I
rather curious to believe in such things except my mother
and Mr. B. A. each of them thought we were very unusual but
a very pretty idea at least - and after the day told you of
in the Barn when Mr. B. A. played for us and we told him of
the days with the little folk was much easier for you and I
- anyway this day - as I recall it must have been about the
time of day we should have been going to S.S. or church but
we went exploring and went to the Creek, met John near the
spring. He told us again of the Island and lent us his boat
to go there. We went - and found it a very lovely beautiful
spot - the little folks came almost immediately we landed -
soon we builded us a lovely little play house with the help
of the little folks. There were then several of them, say
some four or five boys and girls like our selves - among
the flowers we saw the Fairies for the first time - learned
from the little folks the difference between the Fairies and
prixies and the Gnomes. There we pledged ourselves to one
another for all time, witnessed by the little folks and
blessed by the Fairies - sang to by the prixies, and guess we
might have stayed on and on but late in the evening we were
called home by your Mother and Josie your older sister. Oh
yes we went again to the island, and yet again until it was
too cold to go - even tho we both got whippings for going,
but it was beautiful there - a real fairy land.
Funny - but something was set in motion other day that might
- might I say make it possible for the school to be - so
you will have to just begin to get ready to be an instructor
in that school when ever it finds a place in the scheme of
things.
As to questions Q-6- [2072-10, Par. 9-A] "for again the law
is implied - and is active" I understand this to mean -
Jesus is the law of GOD made manifest in the earth and when
you contact same it is active in your own experience. Just
as you have studied some things as would take the place of or
make its self equal to Him and there is nothing its equal.
Yes - think you are correct about answer 7 [2072-10, Par.
10-A] - but could do much better talking this out to you
than trying to write it - but the answer came back to the
symbol of material experience or the manner of application
symbolized in the figure given in the chart.
Some how the information chooses some very beautiful ray of
expressing an association in other experiences - wish oft
that could express my self as well when awake and in a more
normal mind.
She certainly has the right frame of mind to my way
of thinking - most of us know - but so few can or do
attempt to put our whole trust in what we know.
Can the readings help to clarify any approach to the Christ -
then it will have been worth while - and most of all for them
to be able to be a sure footing or help to you - just makes
me doubly happy.
We haven't really had the board reading as yet [
2072]. Have
felt so sure of the reading verifying the judgement taken
that day spontaneously haven't done that but will try and do
that this week possibly tomorrow - but will let you know what
it says.
Rain - my what an armful we are having just now - in His own
way has come and is lovely. Too late for most of the garden
but will save the trees and the grass am sure - thanks again
for every thing - hope some time to have the chance to talk
this reading over with you and let you ask your questions
from one line to another if you will.
With love to each of you
a Kiss for little Anna Eddie
9/06/42 [
2072]'s letter to EC:
Dearest Eddie,
Thank you for your letter.
Eddie, I hae been reading Exodus and Leviticus and I
certainly would like to be able to understand the reason for
God's giving the laws of the sacrificing of the animals (or
offerings, should one say?) to the Children of Israel. It
seems such a strange God that asks these offerings, that uses
blood to sanctify the altar, etc. What is the meaning of all
this, for if God required it it must have a reason? Do you
have a reading on this that I might borrow to read? I don't
know when anything has ever worried me so much. It's so
strange, so utterly bewildering!
Also what is the meaning of "40 days and 40 nights" so often
used? Is it to be taken literally, or symbolically, or was
it just a term for an unknown or indefinite length of time?
Are there any readings or notes from readings, that Gladys
could mail me to read, explaining any portions or dates of
the Old Testament? I would certainly appreciate, take good
care of, and return them safely. But I certainly do need
them now. Will you please ask her?
I hope you and Mrs. Cayce are both well.
All too soon [
1861] will be going back to teaching again. It
seems like summer flies faster with each year.
What interesting things have been happening with you, with
readings, with members, with books, etc? We're always glad
to hear.
We have about two more Church publications to write to [in
re Search for God]. I shall send the addresses as soon as
we get the letters off.
Enclosed is check for Glad Helpers.
Very lovingly, [
2072]
9/09/42 EC's letter to [
2072]:
Dearest [
2072]
Always good to hear from you - some how your letter reminds
me of so long ago, you still feel I should solve every
problem for you. That is a lot of confidence, and just wish
I could - yes, the reading of the laws and ordinances as
recorded in Exodus and Leviticus when one takes it from the
reasoning of today becomes not only hard reading but very
disturbing at times, one wonders if there is even sufficient
ceremony about our attempted worship today. But the
"shedding of blood" you see it is all tied up with the first
commandment to man. "Thou shall not eat of the tree of Good
and Evil - in the day ye eat thereof ye shall surely DIE -
and to die physically meant shedding of or stopping of the
blood flow. Then the animal sacrifice was only a symbol of
the death of The Christ - there is no changing the law - no
changing God's Blessings or His anger - save as compliance
with law. Now law is Love - Love is law - yet there is no
remission of Sins without the shedding of blood. Hence the
necessity of Jesus The Christ shedding His blood for us.
In the study of the Bible we have notes on this portion of
same. You can get them by writing to Mae Verhoeven care this
office. She is as you possibly recall the secy of the Bible
Group - also S.S.
40 is a symbolic number - meaning with out number almost
- yet is typifying the combination of the body also - as
related to body-mind and soul.
Mrs. Cayce is in Ky at present - been there for a week will
stay another week or so. She needed a good rest - I am
pretty well think my little layoff did me a lot of good. Yes
- time has a way of getting away - and the older we get the
faster it seems to get away.
Nothing particularly of interest - every thing is tho really
interesting. Just some times more than others.
Thanks for the contribution to Glad Helpers - but please know
you are not expected to pay each month unless you just wish
to do so. Appreciate it but it is not compulsory. Wish you
were here for the meeting this afternoon. Just hope you are
fine - believe you will find the data on the Bible [Tuesday
Night Bible Group Minutes taken down in shorthand and
transcribed by GD, then mimeographed by Mae Verhoeven (later
referred to as IMG)] worth reading. Several have told us we
have made those parts of Lev. Numb. and the like living truth
and not just a matter of routine or mystery.
Try one or two of them and see what you make of them. Choose
any chapters you like and think will find something on each
of them.
Thanks again for every thing - wish could have about two
weeks of just talking with you from day to day.
With love to each of you eddie
9/13/42 (Sunday evening) [
2072]'s letter to EC:
Dearest Eddie,
Thank you for the answers regarding the Bible. Maybe after I
have read through the Bible I will be able to understand much
better. I hope so.
Oh I'm really sorry I have such a questioning mind and must
ask you so many questions but it's so very good to have
someone who can help one with such questions (for you have
studied them before me) and I know of no one whom I so like
to take my questions to. Forgive me, please, for so many
questions. There is no one who has studied the Bible so much
as you, and certainly no one I know of who knows of and has
studied reincarnation in relation to same.
I'm studying Deuteronomy now.
Thank you for suggesting the notes of the Bible Class. I'm
sure they shall be most interesting and helpful.
How nice for Mrs. Cayce to have a vacation. She deserved it
and it will do her much good, I know.
We had a lovely and thoughtful letter from the Dillmans this
last week and they sent us the print of [
1861] and myself.
Thought it was certainly sweet of them.
How are Sally and Hugh Lynn? and when may we all
be expecting to hear of the arrival of a new little
Cayce? Is it this month or next?
Back to the Bible: I find it not nearly so hard to read
now as it seemed to be to me when I was younger. I never
realized it as a continuous story before. Certain events
stood out as single stories but it isn't until now I link
them all together. I think something I used to hear my
grandfather say had influenced me, or prejudiced me, too
greatly, that the old Testament was full of fighting and an
angry and jealous God. He did not like th OLD Testament.
But, now I see it should be read and even helps one
understand the new Testament. Heretofore I have picked up
the Bible and read a little here and there and gathered only
a slight meaning.
Can you explain a little more fully what you mean by "40
typifying the combination of the body as related to body,
mind and soul"?
Has it ever been given as to who Moses became in other
incarnations? Job? Solomon?
I must close for tonight. I wish we could sit down and talk
- yes - EVERY day. Oh, I'm afraid I'd wear you out wanting
you to talk and answer questions. But I can think of nothing
nicer than to just be with you for a week or two and just
let you talk whenever you wished, for you always have so
many interesting things to say. What an interesting and
worthwhile life yours has been.
Lovingly, [
2072]
9/16/42 EC's letter to [
2072]:
Dearest [
2072]
Good to hear from you again. Believe you will get much from
the Bible notes and am anxious to know your reaction. While
have tried to make a careful study of the Bible for years,
know am not so good. Have with the help of the readings been
able to get much more from same. Just whether have gotten
off on the right foot or not - is what bothers me now and
then, but for my self the way we read it answers - when it
never did before. Do not mean this as bragging, but had a
very good illustration of this with last S. lesson - there
was an elderly man in the class who has been a minister
for years, in fact is retired now. He said to me after the
lesson "Well my friend you do make the old testament a living
word again. You present it as a living thing, which God's
word is and the Old as well as the New is His word, but most
of us have failed to see it."
A very lovely compliment, but realize I deserve no credit for
it, for it is the work of the readings, and must again be HIS
word - or the readings are all wrong.
Like your questions [
2072] - only regret I haven't always
the time to write what would like to say, and abbreviating
it doesn't do the question or the answer justice - could
only be done properly by having the time to talk it out, but
when together too many other things often crowd in for their
manifestation, so you keep right on asking - possibly will
get it out of me by piecemeals, as many of the group tell me.
I do not know a couple who are doing more real good than the
Dillmans [Gladys & Charles Dillman] in their quiet easy way
no ostentation whatever, just really lovely lovely people. I
love them as if they were my very own, and am sure they think
lots of me. Sally and H. L. are fine, Sally is taking care
of the house while Gertrude is away, and doing a lovely job
of it. Think they expect the little stranger by or before
the middle of next Month.
Will be interesting to know what character they attract to
them. Have had several dreams about it of late - and am
afraid to even mention it to them. Don't know that they
would be pleased or not.
No - when we read the Bible as a history we lose the real
purpose it seems to me, do we think of the characters as,
periods through which we as individuals pass. It is
different, then when we read ordinances they are directed
to our imagination of unfoldment and not as ritual that was
rarely adhered to by any of the people to whom they were
given - and when they are taken as ritual it doesn't relieve,
merely bypasses a crisis for some individual and we realize
it is the spirit and not the letter of the law that is so
important and the Ritual is a symbol and not an activity -
rarely at all.
40 - here is one of those questions it would take pages to
try and tell you and to abbreviate it - makes it possibly
useless. Let's say we leave that until some time when can
talk to you about it - but let's take this to think of. The
story of the Bible all through is the story of a HUMAN body.
Each character then representing some characteristic of
a body - each phase of an existence or consciousness is
depicted in some one or an other character is the development
through say the early years, another through adolescence, and
so on so the whole thing is our own selves depicted for us in
the lives of others. Recorded by men ordained for that work.
But have to run now - as ever time for work.
Bye now - with love to each of you. eddie
9/20/42 (Sunday) [
2072]'s letter to EC:
Dear Eddie,
Here are two more addresses of persons to whom we have sent
letters today:
Rev. Eugene Olive, Editor
Biblical Recorder
Wake Forest, N.C.
Mr. Charles Clayton Morrison
Editor, The Christian Century
407 So. Dearborn St.
Chicago, Ill.
I have just been scanning the N.Y. Times "List of Books
Promised for Fall" expecting to find "There is a River,"
but was unable to find it listed.
Thank you for your letter.
Are you getting some cooler weather today? We have had two
terribly hot days and nights, but clouds and a cool wind have
relieved greatly today.
We thought you might like to know that the student ([
2829])
to whom [
1861] gave a copy of "A Search for God" this summer
said she had used a portion of the book on a Church program
of some kind and has loaned the book to a girl friend to
read. She again said she like the book very much. Miss
[
2829] is a lovely person - President of the Y.W.C.A. at
College, active in Methodist Church work and has been working
this summer as cashier in the ... Tea Room to pay for her
education.
[
1861] and I are due for some re-check physical readings soon
after the 30th of September. Would you please give us an
appointment date for any afternoon thereafter.
I suppose Mrs. Cayce is home by now. I hope that she had a
very nice trip and vacation. Give her my love.
Have just started reading I Samuel now.
One question that came to my mind recently was: Could it be
that John the Baptist was Moses and also Jacob? Another: Do
the twelve disciples have any relation to the twelve tribes
of Israel?
I will close now so [
1861] can take this to mail.
Goodnight, and my love, [
2072]
9/24/42 EC's letter to [
2072]:
Dearest [
2072]
Thanks for yours of the 20th - have mailed the books to the
two addresses sent me - Rev. Eugene Olive and Mr. Morrison.
Are having very nice comments from several people over the
country. Think that "There is a River" being a special
edition may not be listed as yet they will possible take
notice of it in the regular edition. We wish to if possible
as am sure you gathered from the reading on same make the
demand so great from the special edition that most will
wish to read the book.
Yes - turned cold with a vengeance on Monday. Was 40 degrees
cooler than on Sunday at the same hour. Like it the sun is
bright and warms up during the day and gets cool at night,
makes good nights to sleep.
Thanks for the report from the (student). That is the type
person we hope to reach, for their influence on so many
others.
I may have to be out of town for day or so about the 1st.
May be best if I give you the period for your check readings
in the next letter else might have to change it, but won't
you be able to come down for those. It is about time was
seeing you again don't you think??
Mrs. C. got home last evening. Yes were all glad to see her,
but think Sally and H. L., especially Sally is beginning to
feel a bit uncomfortable am sure to have to attend to any
housekeeping, but says she feels fine. Yes, she had nice
trip. Had trouble breaking her glasses. That gave her a
bad time but she is feeling pretty good.
John the Baptist was Elijah - the last chapter of Malachi
tells you so in so many words - 4 - chapter and 5th verse,
then Jesus tells his disciples in Matt 17 and 12 that who
it is. So don't think he was Moses also. Yes - Jesus told
the multitude that the 12 would judge the 12 tribes so it is
numbers here or answers to the 12 centers of emotion in body.
For is as said in last - it is not chance there are given
three patriarches. They represent definite conditions
of our body - they are personal as well as mental and
spiritual, they are conditions of consciousness in our lives
unfoldments, but too much of a discussion to try and write
just now - will try and some time give you what it means to
me, but that does not necessarily mean they should mean just
that to you.
Thanks again for everything.
With love to you both Eddie
10/01/42 She submitted questions.
