Dearest Eddie,
It was nice to have talked to you for a few minutes the other
day even though we couldn't see you. We certainly should
have like to have come out, but [
1861] had to come back for
the picture that night and a ONE day trip, leaving here at
4:15 A.M. and getting back at 1:30 P.M. is just a little too
much for us. We came back quite tired, as it is, from going
early or returning late, and it takes one or two days rest to
put us normal again. We wouldn't make very good travelling
salesmen, I guess.
The treatments were good, though, and we always sleep
wonderful for at least two nights after.
It was the Friday night after we returned from Norfolk,
however, that I had a rather strange experience. I wish
you'd tell me what you make of it, for I've been wondering
and trying to find the meaning of it. I had been asleep
and must have slept soundly for I can't remember of dreaming
anything previous to the experience. But as I was waking I
heard a man's voice, the tone perhaps strong, firm, and most
of all I guess I would describe it as warning - as I try to
remember it now. It was just as though it was in the room,
but I was neither frightened by the thought that it seemed
present nor by the strange words - I remember that distinctly
- for I woke and then said the words over and over to
remember them and to wonder about them. Was it a warning,
something symbolical and not to be taken literally, or an
hallucination? I haven't worried about it for if it was a
caution I must simply obey it and "be careful", but I have
wanted to know the true meaning and understand it correctly.
The words were, then:- "Careful or you'll burn up, [
2072]"
Addressed to me as "[
2072]". I remember my nick name
distinctly pronounced. Odd, wasn't it?
When you have time I wish you'd help me understand it. We
understand how you are pressed with answering mail, now,
however, and haven't even so much as thought of blaming you -
in fact we only marvel at your wonderful attempts to keep on
going, and your spirit of love, kindness and consideration.
Bless you!
I'm a bit disappointed in the descriptions of Jesus and
the disciples in "The Nazarene" - in fact haven't been any
too enthusiastic about finishing the book since Jesus is
described with "black beard" and small and frail enough that
big strong Peter picks Him up in his arms and carries Him
away from the crowds when He becomes weary. The author
has a wonderful power over words and an unique power of
description, but it is fiction, a figment of HIS imagination
and he doesn't seem to have struck many true facts except
those things actually quoted from the Bible.
It is pouring outside. Clouds came up about 6 o'clock from
the East. [
1861] says rains that come up from the East are
usually good big ones. We're extremely thankful for it for
the ground was so dry we've torn the tops off our onions
trying to get them out of the ground, even trying to be
careful and loosen the earth around them with a knife.
Garden's doing well so far - strawberries, lettuce,
radishes, tiny new peas today - all mighty good.
Love, a kiss, and a hug, [
2072] - Anna

Dearest [
2072]
Thanks for yours of the 21st. I hope you won't mind my
dictating this, but visitors are coming and I don't know
when I'll get this off if I don't give it to someone else.
It certainly was nice to talk with you. I am sorry you
couldn't get out for awhile, at least. Let's hope, though,
that you will have a week and a half with us come the
Congress and will be on hand as often as possible. I am glad
you got good treatments. I certainly need them badly but
haven't been able to get many, though I did get one about
a week ago. I should go every week until I get rid of this
cold.
What an unusual experience! I am sure as you recall what
happened in the dream you seem to get more and more and yet
some of it still evades you. No, that is the reason most of
us lose most of our experiences. We become afraid and lose
hold of what we have gotten. I think is is something for
you to remember. Just whether it is a warning or something
trying to tell you, I believe it will come to you again.
Don't try to make it, but just be ready. Its addressing you
as "[
2072]" would indicate some close association. I think
it will happen to you again, but when you are here we will
try to talk it over.
No, that was my objection to the description of the Master
given in "The Nazarene". I can't conceive, from my own
experiences, of such a description.
My, I wish we could have had some rain. We have been sort of
dry here, even until the grass is drying up. but I believe
they say the rain falls on the just and the unjust alike.
Maybe we will get ours after while.
Well, the days are ticking off and it won't be many days
until we will be looking for you.
Our strawberries have been very nice, but I don't have
time to gather them. Someone, Miss Mary [Mary Wirsing?] I
believe, went out and gathered a pan full the other morning.
We made them into preserves. Only three pints when we had
enough for three gallons if we could have gotten them picked
and had the sugar.
Thanks a lot. With love to you and [
1861]. Please remember
me to Mother [...] and with a kiss for little Anna,
Eddie [EC/wi]
