Vol. II No. 1 - Oct. 3, 1931
These newspaper-like issues of 4 pp. each are 17-1/2" long by
12" wide, sealed into a hardback cover the same size. They
would be difficult to duplicate except perhaps in a newspaper
office, and then they'd probably have to take the whole book
apart to do so.
2. In the vault correspondence folder of Atlantic University
there is a little 6 X 3-1/2 booklet reprinted verbatim from
Norfolk Virginian Pilot of April 13, 1930, entitled ATLANTIC
UNIVERSITY - ITS PLAN AND ITS PURPOSE. This could be
duplicated, or else looked up in the Virginian Pilot.
There are maps of the land on which A.U. was to be built
(details of these plans - foundations already laid, etc.,
architectural drawings are mentioned in the above booklet or
newspaper article).
ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY BULLETIN (flier) was published monthly
[or planned to be] and is on file as follows: Vol. 1, No. 1
- June, 1930, No. 3 - Aug. 1930 (Supplement No. 2), No. 5 -
Oct., 1930.
On
7/05/30 the President and Board of Trustees of A.U.
[invited] "you and your friends" to attend the Cornerstone
Laying of the New Academic Building of the University at 5:00
P.M. on Sat., July 5, 1930. "The exercises will be in charge
of The Grand Lodge of Virginia, A.F. and A.M. Dr. W. H. T.
Squires, of Norfolk, Va., will make the principal address."
On
8/06/30 "The Civic Organizations of Princess Anne County
invite you to be present at a Beach Party and Barbecue To
Acquaint you With the Plans for the Opening of ATLANTIC
UNIVERSITY., Wed. at 2 P.M. NEW OCEAN CASINO, Virginia Beach,
Va." [In small letters at bottom] Women's Club of Princess
Anne County - Virginia Beach Rotary Club - Town Council of
Virginia Beach - Virginia Beach Hotel Association. Please
reply R. J. Johnson, Princess Anne, Va."
12/26/30 A.U. Notice to quit by landlord of Edgewater Johnson
Co., Inc., terminating tenancy from mo. to month; quit the
premises by
1/03/31 or pay rent now in arrears of $982.
Jan. 1931 Forward appear newspaper clippings attempting
to rally financial support for the Atlantic University.
Correspondence, etc.
Feb. 1931, Vol. I, No. 6 MID-YEAR ANNOUNCEMENT ATLANTIC
UNIVERSITY, Listing the Administration, Officers of
Instruction, Assistant Professors - Ideals - Progress in
the Departments - Entrance Requirements - Courses
1930-31 -
Extension Division - Extension Courses. Student Enrollment
1930-31 Session. (A soft booklet 6 x 9. We have 3 copies.
I think the reason we have any of these is that Hugh Lynn
Cayce was on the staff as Librarian.)
2/06/31 Virginia Beach News NEW COURSES AND PROFESSORS NAMED
AT A.U., indicating present status is indefinite, quoting
Morton Blumenthal as saying that with the cut in professors'
salary Dr. Brown assures him that, with the cut made by
creditors, he will at least make ends meet at the present
session... "Under these circumstances we are continuing
to contribute the $5,000 a month in accordance with our
agreement."
This 3rd of six vault folders is full of newspaper clippings,
mostly Va. Beach News, giving activities of A.U. throughout
1931.
The other three folders have to do with correspondence back
and forth between Dr. Brown and A.R.E., his association with
Elon College, Elon, N.C. in 1954, etc., his attempts to keep
A.U. charter alive though inactive. [Fall & Spring 1953-1954
Bulletin of A.U., Silver Beach, VA. announcing EVENING
EXTENSION AND ADULT EDUCATION COURSES. See
6/22/53 Virginian
Pilot article, OLD ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY OPENS IN FALL On
Eastern Shore.]
6/16/58 Hugh Lynn received a letter from the Commonwealth of
Va. saying that he, Hugh Lynn Cayce, had been appointed the
Registered Agent of Atlantic University - a copy had been
sent to the Clerk of Circuit Court, Princess Anne Co., Va.
[He had already been made a Director.]
8/14/58 Dr. Brown sent HLC a thesis on ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY -
A Short History - Presented to the Faculty of the Department
of History, Richmond College - In Partial Fulfillment of the
Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts by John Richard
Scanlon - August 1958. A copy of John R. Scanlon's letter
to Dr. Brown saying "I hope that my thesis tells the story of
A.U. as you think it should be told." Dr. Brown asked HLC to
read and return it with his comments. HLC had me make a copy
of it on our old Ozalid machine; it is still readable but I
doubt if it will duplicate on our machine since the paper is
thin brown onion-skin and the typing not too clear. We
should have it retyped while it is still readable (I hope).
In the
2/19/59 issue of Princess Anne Press [a brief change
in name from Virginia Beach News] we have an article by Mary
Ellen Carter on ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY "Many A Good Crusade",
in which she interviews Dr. Mina Kerr who was Dean of Women
at A.U. during its short duration and remained in Virginia
Beach. Most of the article is about her, but she says
she came to Virginia Beach "for what seemed an opportunity
to help establish a new university of liberal outlook for
curriculum, international relations among students, methods
in teaching and conditions of residence."
Jan. 1960 HLC received, as Registered Agent, Commonwealth
of Va. State Corporation Commission Notice of Assessment of
Registration Fee and Franchise Tax for 1960, indicating that
Atlantic University was in business "at the old stand" right
across Atlantic Ave. from the old site on which the A.U. was
to build - address now ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY, Hugh Lynn Cayce,
R/A, 67th & Atlantic Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA.
Nov. 22, 1960 Dr. Brown wrote HLC: "I hope A.R.E. can take
over the charter of A.U. I must know definitely before the
end of Dec. I know of no other organization except A.R.E. to
take it." (In Dec. 1960 Dr. Brown retired to St. Petersburg,
Fla.)
(Etc., Etc., Etc. I will continue this "history - inventory"
sometime when I can get to it. It includes the Minutes and
Executive Committee Minutes of the early days, for which my
cousin Mildred Davis was Acting Secretary.) In the meantime
send the newspaper man to me and I'll show him everything we
have on the football team.
